These incidents typically occur within the first year of ownership, with some vehicles having as few as 500 miles. Additionally, multiple owners note problems with dead batteries, sometimes leading to the vehicle not starting after being parked. These electrical failures may pose safety risks, especially when lights and indicators go dark at night, potentially affecting visibility and vehicle control.

Owners report several power train issues with the 2024 Hyundai Kona, most notably involving AWD systems locking up around 10,000 miles, causing rear wheel slippage during turns and acceleration from stops. Multiple owners describe error warnings related to shifter systems, occurring as early as 1,500 miles, and issues with the vehicle idling high and revving unexpectedly. One complaint highlights a problem with the emergency parking brake engaging automatically on inclines, potentially disabling the vehicle if the trunk is open. Additionally, a Kona Electric owner experienced power loss at various speeds due to a loose ground wire connection, which was resolved after dealership intervention. These issues, particularly those affecting driving ability and control, could pose safety risks, especially in high-speed or intersection scenarios.

ENGINE

4 complaints

Owners of the 2024 Hyundai Kona report issues primarily related to the vehicle losing motive power while driving. Complaints frequently mention the engine shutting off, sometimes accompanied by warning messages like "Engine off - Switch to Park or Neutral" or the check engine light illuminating. These incidents occur at various mileages, including as early as 175 miles and around 16,000 miles. While the vehicle often restarts and operates normally afterward, owners express concerns about the potential safety risks, particularly if such failures occur in high-risk driving situations like on freeways or bridges. UNKNOWN OR OTHER

2 complaints

Owners of the 2024 Hyundai Kona report two distinct issues in the unknown or other category. One complaint involves a window malfunction where a child's fingers were caught in the gap as the window lowered unexpectedly. This incident appears isolated with no prior occurrences reported by the owner. Another owner describes a situation where the battery and engine lights illuminated, accompanied by a warning message indicating an imminent engine shutdown. This issue resulted in the vehicle automatically shifting into park and shutting off completely. Safety implications include potential injury from the window malfunction and a sudden loss of vehicle power, which could pose a risk if occurring in traffic. Specific mileage or timeline patterns are not reported in these complaints.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE (2 complaints)

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

2 complaints

Owners report issues with the forward collision avoidance system in the 2024 Hyundai Kona, primarily involving unexpected braking at highway speeds when no obstacles are present. Complaints frequently mention the vehicle applying brakes suddenly, with one owner noting this occurred at approximately 80 mph on multiple occasions. Another symptom described is the system inaccurately detecting vehicles that are not in motion, leading to unnecessary alerts. Some owners also experience warnings about the front camera being blocked, despite no physical obstruction. These incidents raise safety implications, as sudden braking at high speeds could pose a risk of rear-end collisions.

On June 5, 2025 I picked up a passenger who couldn't sit in the passenger seat because the headrest is canted at an unsafe angle so the passenger looks down and cannot look straight through the windshield. There is a page in the manual that shows the headrest is adjustable; this is wrong because the headrest is not adjustable. On July 2, 2025 I took it the vehicle in for recalls and asked about this; the service worker said there is no solution because replacement headrests are the same.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
