48 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
16 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners report frequent issues with the 12V battery in the 2024 Lexus RX, including unexpected failures that can lead to the vehicle becoming immobile and inoperable. Complaints frequently mention the inability to start the car, lock or unlock doors, and function keyless entry systems, often requiring jumpstarts or battery replacements. These issues commonly occur within the first few months of ownership, with mileage ranging from 1,500 to 22,790. Safety implications are noted, with one report of a fire and another involving a crash due to unintended acceleration. Buyers should be aware of potential immobilization risks and associated safety concerns.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
10 complaintsOwners report several issues with the 2024 Lexus RX in the UNKNOWN OR OTHER category. Multiple complaints describe sunroofs unexpectedly shattering while driving, posing a safety risk from flying glass. Some reports involve inaccurate fuel gauge readings, leading to potential miscalculations of fuel range. Additionally, there are accounts of dust entering the cabin due to inadequate door gaskets, especially on dirt roads. Another significant issue involves battery drain linked to the vehicle's digital key system and app notifications. One complaint notes an incident involving toxic fumes, resulting in physical symptoms and requiring further inspection. These issues are reported across varying mileage ranges, with some occurring soon after purchase.
POWER TRAIN
4 complaintsOwners report several power train issues with the 2024 Lexus RX. A common problem involves the vehicle not responding to the gas pedal from a stop, causing a delay in acceleration, which is noted as a safety concern in traffic situations. Another issue described is the transmission failing to engage properly, particularly around the second or third gear, leading to high RPMs and potential loss of speed control; this is observed in a vehicle with just over 3,000 miles. Additionally, some owners mention accidental shifts into neutral when the shift knob is inadvertently bumped, resulting in unexpected speed loss. Complaints also include vibrations or stuttering when braking at low speeds or in reverse. These issues are linked to safety implications, such as the risk of accidents due to unexpected vehicle behavior.
ENGINE (3 complaints)
ENGINE
3 complaintsOwners of the 2024 Lexus RX report issues with the engine unexpectedly shutting off or revving loudly under certain conditions. Specifically, one complaint describes the engine or turbo turning off during slow acceleration, causing the vehicle to nose dive and then produce a loud sound upon restarting, which has led to near rear-end collisions. Another owner mentions the engine revving loudly when the gas pedal is released, creating a potential risk of the car not stopping properly. These issues reportedly occur at random intervals and have been noted after the vehicle has accumulated several thousand miles. Safety implications include the risk of collisions due to unexpected vehicle behavior.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE (2 complaints)
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
2 complaintsOwners of the 2024 Lexus RX report issues with the automatic emergency braking system engaging unexpectedly. Complaints frequently mention the system activating violently and suddenly at low speeds, even when no obstacles are present. One owner describes the system engaging six times, including twice in the middle of the street without any apparent obstacles. Another owner reports similar incidents while reversing, where the system activated in a parking lot and during a u-turn in an empty lot, citing minor objects like a leaf or poor visibility conditions as potential triggers. These incidents occur shortly after purchase, suggesting they may arise early in the vehicle's use. The unexpected activation of the braking system poses potential safety risks, particularly in situations where sudden stops could lead to dangerous situations in traffic.
STRUCTURE (2 complaints)
STRUCTURE
2 complaintsOwners report two distinct structural issues with the 2024 Lexus RX. One complaint describes the moonroof spontaneously shattering while driving on the freeway, which limits the vehicle's speed to less than 20 mph due to continued shattering at higher speeds. Another complaint involves the melting of the plastic trim between the driver's door and the rear passenger's door, suggesting a potential defect in the material's quality. These issues are reported without specific mileage details, and the moonroof incident may have safety implications due to the potential for driver distraction or debris entering the cabin. Buyers considering this model should be aware of these reported structural concerns.
STEERING (2 complaints)
STEERING
2 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2024 Lexus RX report issues related to the steering system, with two distinct problems noted. One complaint describes a clicking noise from the steering wheel and a shimmying sensation when braking, attributed to a failing tie rod at approximately 20,611 miles, which was resolved under warranty. Another report highlights potential concerns with the proactive driver assist system, which allegedly causes unexpected steering adjustments, leading to a severe crash with two injuries. This incident involved the vehicle swerving on a snow-covered road, raising potential safety implications for the driver assist feature. These reports suggest buyers should be vigilant about steering system performance and the behavior of driver assist technologies, especially in adverse weather conditions.
VISIBILITY/WIPER (2 complaints)
VISIBILITY/WIPER
2 complaintsOwners of the 2024 Lexus RX report issues with the vehicle's visibility and wiper system. Complaints frequently mention the front windshield as being very fragile, with susceptibility to chips and cracks from small rocks, leading to impaired visibility due to glare from the sun. Additionally, one owner describes a failure of the wiper system during a rainstorm, where the wipers became stuck in the middle of the windshield, attributed to a defective motor, which posed a significant safety risk due to reduced visibility. These issues are reported shortly after purchase, suggesting they may occur at low mileage. Buyers should be aware of potential windshield fragility and wiper motor defects when considering this vehicle.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL (2 complaints)
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
2 complaintsOwners report sudden unintended acceleration while attempting to park the 2024 Lexus RX, with both complaints describing this issue occurring approximately 20 feet behind another vehicle. The typical symptom includes the vehicle unexpectedly accelerating at a high speed, requiring the driver to apply the brake forcefully to prevent a collision. Both incidents did not result in a crash, as the vehicles were successfully stopped in time. The complaints do not specify mileage, suggesting this issue may not be related to vehicle age or wear. These reports highlight potential safety implications due to the unexpected nature of the acceleration and the need for immediate driver intervention to maintain control.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
