2024 Hyundai Elantra Common Problems by Component
50 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
13 complaintsOwners of the 2024 Hyundai Elantra frequently report issues with the horn becoming inoperative, often due to blown fuses, with some experiencing repeated failures even after repairs. This is noted at mileages as low as 1,000 to over 36,000 miles. Another commonly reported problem involves the vehicle's battery unexpectedly draining overnight, leaving the car unable to start, with some owners needing to use a 12V reset or jump start. Safety implications are significant, as some owners mention being unable to use the horn to avoid accidents, and issues with safety feature malfunctions, such as collision alerts and random disabling of safety systems, are also reported. These electrical system problems are particularly concerning for potential buyers considering the Elantra for reliable daily use.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
11 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners report frequent issues with the horn on the 2024 Hyundai Elantra, with failures occurring as early as 16,000 miles. Complaints commonly describe the horn becoming inoperative due to potential issues with the horn pad switch or clockspring, and some mention water causing a shortcut in the assembly. This defect poses significant safety risks, as several owners recount near-collisions when unable to alert other drivers. Additionally, a crash is reported where the vehicle's steering and brakes were affected, leading to a collision. Buyers considering this model should be aware of these potential safety implications and the recurring nature of the horn failures.
STEERING
5 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2024 Hyundai Elantra frequently report issues related to horn failure, with some complaints linking this to steering-related safety incidents, including crashes. Several owners describe the horn ceasing to function around 10,000 miles, which has implications for safety as it hinders the ability to warn other drivers. Additionally, some owners report intermittent power steering difficulties, where the steering becomes heavy and unresponsive, often accompanied by dashboard malfunctions such as inactive speedometers and check engine lights. These steering and horn issues have been involved in vehicle accidents, highlighting potential safety risks for prospective buyers.
LANE DEPARTURE (4 complaints)
LANE DEPARTURE
4 complaintsOwners of the 2024 Hyundai Elantra report frequent issues with the lane departure system, particularly the "Consider Taking a Break" alert that appears without clear cause, even when drivers maintain their lane. This alert is described as distracting and cannot be disabled, occurring repeatedly on expressways, sometimes as often as every 5-10 minutes. Another common problem involves random disabling of the camera system linked to multiple warnings, including lane departure, which resets after a few minutes but occurs sporadically. These issues typically emerge shortly after purchase, with one owner noting occurrences within the first month. While no crashes or loss of control are reported, the distraction and unpredictability of these alerts may pose safety concerns for some drivers.
ENGINE (4 complaints)
ENGINE
4 complaintsOwners of the 2024 Hyundai Elantra report several engine-related issues. Complaints frequently mention oil loss leading to engine damage, with one instance involving an oil plug falling out after an oil change, and another where a loud pop and smoke were followed by oil leakage and engine failure. The incidents occur at various mileages, including as low as 14,421 miles. Additional reports include engine stalling while driving, accompanied by all dashboard lights flashing, and a speedometer turning red with loss of acceleration. These issues pose potential safety risks, such as being stranded on highways or sudden loss of vehicle control.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL (2 complaints)
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
2 complaintsOwners report two distinct issues with the 2024 Hyundai Elantra's vehicle speed control. One complaint describes a complete loss of acceleration when merging onto a freeway, where the gas pedal becomes unresponsive and requires the car to be restarted to regain functionality. This incident occurs without any warning lights or error messages. Another complaint involves a recurring "Forward Safety system disabled. RADAR BLOCKED" message appearing intermittently, suggesting a potential issue with the forward radar sensor. Both issues occur shortly after vehicle purchase, but specific mileage is not mentioned. The loss of acceleration while merging onto a freeway presents a notable safety risk due to the potential for loss of control in traffic.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING (2 complaints)
EXTERIOR LIGHTING
2 complaintsOwners of the 2024 Hyundai Elantra report issues related to the exterior lighting, with two distinct problems emerging. One complaint describes all electric warning lights activating and a loss of power steering while driving, which could indicate a broader electrical issue. Another owner reports a recurring issue with the mounted brake light failing shortly after purchase, noting that the light works intermittently and suspects a wiring problem. This brake light problem has persisted over two years, suggesting a potential ongoing wiring defect. These issues could impact vehicle safety, particularly if the brake light failure affects visibility to other drivers.
VISIBILITY (2 complaints)
VISIBILITY
2 complaintsOwners of the 2024 Hyundai Elantra report issues with the visibility of the vehicle's displays and windshield. One owner describes the instrument panel and center console display going blank intermittently while driving, with this issue occurring around 10,000 miles. Another owner reports a crack in the driver's side front windshield obstructing the line of sight and a smaller crack on the passenger's side, noted at approximately 1,000 miles. No crashes or loss of control are reported, but these visibility issues could impact driving safety. Buyers considering this model may want to be aware of these potential concerns with the vehicle's displays and windshield integrity.
SERVICE BRAKES (1 complaints)
SERVICE BRAKES
1 complaintWhen I am using cruise control, my car will just randomly slam on its breaks. I have taken my car into the dealer multiple times, and they have written it off everytime. They have said it’s “direct sunlight” yet I can prove it’s not happening in the sunlight. It happened again today when it was cloudy. It’s also happened before the sun came up in the morning. I have even filed a case with Hyundai directly, and they said if they can’t get it to mimic it, then they can’t do anything about it. But it’s so random, sometimes it happens 50 miles from home, other times it’s 300 miles from home. Always willing to let anyone inspect my vehicle to help solve this issue. I’ve been taking it to my dealer for a full year until I found out I needed to come put it here. It’s random, it won’t happen in the same spot twice. But every time it’s done it, there is never a vehicle in front of me. My assumption is there is a defect with the adaptive cruise control. I’ve talked with Hyundai and they claim they’ve never heard of this happening to anyone, yet when I google it, there are MULTIPLE forums with people stating this exact thing is happening to them. SAFETY issue is it slams on the brakes so hard I’ll go from 80 to 65 before I can get the cruise control off. If someone is behind me when it does this, they will slam into me.when I’m dropping 15 mph quickly, that vehicle behind me will hit me like I’m a stopped object. No warning lights before it happens. This has been happening since I bought my vehicle at 0moled to now where I have 34k miles
WHEELS (1 complaints)
WHEELS
1 complaintSafety-relatedPartner was traveling at or under the posted speed limit, when the front passenger tire "blew." He lost control of the vehicle and was thrown into a home. Car is a total loss. The home is damaged, and he suffered injuries. There were no warning lights or alarms. This was a certified pre-owned, purchased 2 months prior. Milage was at 17737 when the incident occurred, 16242 at purchase. The same tire was reported as being replaced due to a flat by the dealership, before my purchase. The incident is under investigation by the insurance company. Contacted the dealer, they said that "tires blow" at any time, new or used. Instructed us to report it to Hyundai; the insurance company did that, and Hyundai stated there is no known issue with the vehicle. Tire make is Kumho brand, solus TA3 to the best of my knowledge. A police report was filed, and it was deemed related to a malfunction; the driver was not cited. Speed, drugs, and alcohol were not a contributing factor.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
