ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

14 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2024 Jeep Compass frequently report electrical system failures, with common issues including unexpected activation of the automatic emergency braking (AEB) system and multiple dashboard error messages related to safety features like blind spot monitoring and lane assist. Several complaints describe the vehicle failing to start or experiencing battery-related issues, often at mileages around 12,000 to 13,000 miles. Safety implications are noted in reports where the AEB system engages without cause, leading to abrupt braking, and one instance where a crash occurred due to active lane management malfunction. These patterns suggest potential reliability concerns for used car buyers considering this model, particularly regarding the functionality of critical safety systems.

14 complaints total1 crash

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

4 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2024 Jeep Compass report several issues under the "UNKNOWN OR OTHER" category, with some involving significant safety implications. Commonly described problems include random vehicle lockups while driving, often compared to emergency braking without apparent cause, and sensor malfunctions affecting systems like brake lights, lane assist, and turn signals. These issues sometimes occur at highway speeds, as one owner reports an unprompted auto braking event at 75 mph. Complaints frequently mention these problems arising shortly after purchase, with one vehicle having only 41,000 miles. Safety concerns are highlighted by reports of unintended braking and a crash linked to undisclosed prior vehicle damage.

4 complaints total1 crash

POWER TRAIN

3 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2024 Jeep Compass report several power train issues. Complaints frequently mention the "transmission service" warning light activating soon after purchase, with one owner experiencing this issue immediately after acquiring the vehicle. Another common pattern involves the service four-wheel-drive light and drive mode warnings intermittently appearing, which dealership visits have not resolved. Additionally, one owner reports smoke and a strong odor from the engine compartment, linked to a transmission cooler failure, with the issue recurring despite initial repairs. The mileage at which these issues occur varies, with one report noting failures at approximately 6,448 miles. Safety implications are highlighted by a crash-related complaint, though details about the incident remain unclear. Potential buyers should be aware of these recurring issues and the associated repair challenges.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE (2 complaints)

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

2 complaints

Owners report two main issues with the 2024 Jeep Compass's forward collision avoidance system. The first issue involves the brakes activating independently while driving, which occurs intermittently and is not accompanied by fault codes, making it difficult for dealers to address. This problem is noted around 3,000 miles. The second issue involves a warning message indicating that the automatic emergency braking system is unavailable, starting at approximately 300 miles. This fault disables the safety feature and is accompanied by a persistent warning light. Both issues have safety implications as they affect the vehicle's braking capabilities, with one owner also reporting an unrelated problem of the electronic parking brake activating without input.

2 complaints total
AIR BAGS (2 complaints)

AIR BAGS

2 complaintsSafety-related

Owners report instances of air bag non-deployment in the 2024 Jeep Compass during crashes. Specifically, complaints describe situations where the vehicle impacts a guardrail or experiences a severe frontal collision, yet the air bags fail to activate. Both incidents involve crashes at highway speeds, with each resulting in one injury. These reports suggest a potential safety issue concerning air bag performance during significant impacts, which prospective buyers should consider when evaluating this vehicle's safety features.

2 complaints total2 crashes2 injuries
SERVICE BRAKES (2 complaints)

SERVICE BRAKES

2 complaints

Owners of the 2024 Jeep Compass report issues with the service brakes, specifically involving sudden acceleration and loss of braking capability. Complaints frequently mention an error code 2299 linked to throttle control system malfunctions, which may coincide with a warning message on the dashboard. One owner describes experiencing this issue twice, both times resulting in the inability to control the vehicle's speed and requiring towing for diagnosis. Another owner notes that the ABS and cruise control systems shut off unexpectedly while driving. These incidents suggest potential safety implications, including loss of control, though no crashes or injuries are reported.

2 complaints total
LANE DEPARTURE (2 complaints)

LANE DEPARTURE

2 complaints

Owners of the 2024 Jeep Compass frequently report issues with the lane departure system and related safety features. Common symptoms include false alerts indicating that safety functions such as lane departure and blind spot monitoring are unavailable or need servicing. Additionally, owners describe the lane departure system pulling the vehicle into the wrong lane or becoming randomly unavailable, with no prior warnings. Some owners also mention the automatic emergency braking activating unexpectedly, particularly on highways, which poses a significant safety risk. Despite servicing attempts, these issues persist, and dealerships often cannot replicate the problems. Multiple owners have observed these malfunctions, suggesting a pattern, although specific mileage ranges are not consistently noted.

When I go to buckle or unbuckle my seat belt it takes a lot of effort and time! I have to use my middle finger just to reach down to the button! This is very annoying and also would be unsafe in a vehicle accident if you needed to exit in a hurry!

On [XXX], a rental vehicle issued by Enterprise was stopped due to an expired North Carolina license plate [XXX] ) and a defective taillight. The expired plate was physically affixed to the Jeep Compass at the time of rental, yet Enterprise’s rental receipt showed a different plate number [XXX] ). This discrepancy was never disclosed before the stop and was repeatedly denied by Enterprise staff for months. Multiple Enterprise representatives—including the branch manager where the vehicle was rented—insisted the Jeep had “only ever” had the [XXX] plate in their system, despite the North Carolina plate being listed on the signed rental agreement and cited by law enforcement. Later, Enterprise claimed the vehicle was re-registered in another state after impound, which altered internal records. This retroactive change created a misleading paper trail that misrepresented the actual tag on the vehicle during the rental period. The expired plate and defective taillight directly triggered a law-enforcement stop, exposing the authorized driver to legal risk, arrest, and vehicle seizure. This unsafe condition should have been identified and corrected before releasing the vehicle, per standard fleet-safety procedures. After impound, personal property left in the vehicle—including electronics—was denied by Enterprise staff as ever existing, despite multiple third-party witnesses confirming its presence. One electronic item was later tracked via GPS to a private residence unrelated to any Enterprise location, after which it was abruptly “found.” Other property remains missing. failure to ensure vehicle roadworthiness, improper record-keeping that concealed the true plate assignment, and mishandling of customer property after impound. How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
