Compass electrical complaints by model year

The 2018 model year leads by a wide margin, with far more complaints than any other and the highest rate per vehicle sold. 2019 comes next, then 2022, which has its own spike tied to instrument cluster problems. 2020 and 2021 sit lower. The 2023 to 2025 years show few complaints, but they have had little time on the road, so those low counts do not make them safer picks. Their reports already describe stalling, battery trouble and safety systems dropping out.

What goes wrong

Sudden power loss with little warning is the main electrical complaint on this model. Messages pile up on the dash, then the engine quits and the steering and brakes go heavy. Dead main and auxiliary batteries, a stop/start system that will not restart the engine at a light, and touchscreens that go black or show lines come up again and again. A black screen also takes out the backup camera. Dealers often find no stored codes or cannot reproduce the fault, so the problem returns.

The safety risk is real. Complaints cover stalls at highway speed and in intersections, and several owners report crashes after a stall or a dashboard blackout. One 2022 report includes an injury. The 2018 model year has three fire reports, including smoke from under the hood after a jump start. Some cars went back to the dealer many times. One 2025 case ended with a failed main computer and a replacement part on back order. Electrical problems make up about a third of all complaints on this model.

Symptoms owners report

Engine shuts off while driving

The engine quits at speed, in intersections or when pulling away. Owners often see a stack of warnings first, such as transmission, stability control, AWD or coolant messages. Power steering and brakes go heavy, and the parking brake may set itself. Some cars need minutes before they restart.

Dead or repeatedly replaced batteries

Owners report main and auxiliary batteries that die again and again, no-starts in the driveway, and cars that show as running but will not start. Some also needed an alternator, a wiring harness or a fuse block. A few report melted battery parts.

Stop/start will not restart

A Stop/Start Unavailable warning appears, or the engine cuts off before the car fully stops and then will not restart at a light. Dealers sometimes say the system simply will not work properly. This shows up across 2018 to 2023 reports.

Black or glitching screens

The Uconnect touchscreen shows lines, pixelates, flashes or goes black. The backup camera goes with it. Instrument clusters on 2022 cars can go dark or stay in night mode during the day, so speed and fuel level cannot be read.

Driver-assist systems drop out

On 2024 and 2025 cars, lane assist, blind spot alert, forward collision warning and automatic braking show as unavailable all at once. Owners also report false automatic braking, turn signals that switch on by themselves and fog lights that cycle on and off.

False coolant warnings

A high coolant temperature message appears while the gauge reads normal, and engine power is cut or the engine shuts off. On 2021 cars, a new thermostat housing and sensor did not cure it. Some 2020 owners also saw an electronic throttle warning.

When the problems start

Many problems show up early. Owners report no-starts and stalls under 500 miles, at 550 miles and at 1,700 miles, and dash trouble within the first few thousand miles on 2022 cars. Touchscreen failures cluster around 22,000 and 40,000 miles on 2018 cars. Coolant shutdowns appeared near 21,000 miles on a 2020, and lighting and wiper failures near 47,000 miles on a 2021.

Repairs and recalls

Fixes often do not hold. Reported repairs include a PCM update, a new start-stop battery, replaced batteries, a replaced fuse block and a replaced sensor. Dealers also clear codes and reboot the system, and one owner was quoted over $600 for a stop/start fault. Federal recall records list four recalls in this area. One replaces the powertrain control module on certain 2018 vehicles including the Compass. Two update software for instrument panel brightness, covering 2017 to 2018 and 2022 to 2023 cars. A fourth, for 2022, replaces the windshield and headlamp switch and adds a light sensor module and wiring jumper harness. All are free. Independent repair-cost data puts the model's annual repair cost at $526.

Checking a used Compass for electrical problems

  • Enter the VIN on the federal recall lookup and confirm the PCM, instrument cluster and body control module recalls were completed.
  • Ask for service records showing battery replacements, and check both the main and auxiliary batteries for age.
  • Test the stop/start system at several lights. Watch for warnings or an engine that will not restart.
  • Run the touchscreen for 15 minutes. Look for lines, flicker or blackouts, and confirm the backup camera works.
  • On a 2022, drive in daylight and confirm the instrument cluster is bright and readable.
  • Scan the dash for driver-assist warnings and test the lights, wipers, signals and door locks.

Jeep Compass Electrical Problems: common questions

Which Jeep Compass years have the most electrical problems?
2018 has the most complaints by far, followed by 2019 and 2022. Newer years show fewer complaints, but they have had less time to collect them. Reports on 2023 to 2025 cars already describe stalling and safety system dropouts.
Is it safe to drive a Compass with these electrical faults?
Not without a fix. Owners report the engine shutting off at highway speed and in intersections, with heavy steering and brakes. Crashes followed some of these stalls. A car that has stalled once can do it again, since dealers often cannot reproduce the fault.
Is there a recall for Jeep Compass electrical problems?
Federal recall records list four in this area. They cover a powertrain control module replacement on certain 2018 vehicles, and instrument cluster brightness fixes on 2017 to 2018, 2022 and 2022 to 2023 cars. Check the VIN to see if a recall applies and was done.
What does it cost to fix Compass electrical problems?
Costs vary. Recall repairs are free. One owner was quoted over $600 for a stop/start fault. Independent repair-cost data puts annual repair cost for the model at $526. Repeat visits for the same fault are common.
Why does my Compass stall with warning lights?
Owners report engine shutoffs after warnings for transmission, stability control, AWD or coolant, often with a normal coolant gauge. Causes named include batteries, cabling and computer faults, but dealers often find no codes. Get a dealer diagnosis and ask about open recalls.
