POWER TRAIN

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2023-2025 F-150 vehicles equipped with the Trailer Tow Max Duty package and a 9.75-inch heavy duty axle with a 3/4 float axle design. The rear axle hub bolt may fatigue and break, which can result in damage to the axle hub splines.

Consequence

Damaged axle hub splines can result in a vehicle rollaway when in park without the parking brake applied or cause a loss of drive power. Either of these conditions can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Dealers will replace the left and right rear axle shaft assemblies, free of charge. This is a phased recall. Ford owners will receive letters in multiple phases, beginning August 2025 through Winter 2025. Phase 1 will include 2023 F-150 model year vehicles. Phase 2 will include 2025 F-150 model year vehicles and Phase 3 will include 2024 F-150 model year vehicles. While coming into my garage to park, it’s like the truck accelerated which caused damage to the truck and my home.

2025-04-01

I was stopped waiting in line at a security gate. I was approximately 10 feet from the vehicle in front of me. A police officer started to walk between the vehicles. My foot was lightly on the brakes when suddenly the truck started surging forward. I immediately jammed as hard as I could on the brakes but my truck continued to move forward. I was forced to slam the shifter into park. There was a loud grinding noise and it startled the police officer and she jumped out of the way. , my truck stopped just before hitting the vehicle in front of me. My truck has the 10R80 transmission and it has now completely failed at 16000 miles. The vehicle completely locked up but fortunately I was moving under 10 mph because it would have been catastrophic had I been going faster. It became immediately undrivable. The dealership has tried to fix it but as of today after two weeks in their shop, can’t even get it out of park.

2025-11-28

The rear glass panel of the panoramic sunroof on my 2024 Ford F-150 (approximately 8,800 miles) suddenly and spontaneously shattered while I was driving. There was a single upward-pointing fracture near the front-center of the panel, and the rest of the glass fragmented outward from that point. There was no impact, no debris, no nearby vehicles, and no physical evidence of anything striking the roof or surrounding areas. No objects were found inside the vehicle. The sunroof is available for inspection upon request. This failure created an immediate safety risk. The shattered panel was directly above my two children seated in the rear, and falling glass fragments posed a significant danger of injury. A sudden overhead glass failure also presents a hazard to other drivers if fragments are expelled from the vehicle. There were no signs or symptoms before the breakage. The Ford dealership inspected the vehicle but did not identify any impact damage and did not confirm a cause. The failure has not been reproduced, but I found multiple similar reports from other Ford owners, suggesting this may be consistent with spontaneous internal stress failure of the tempered glass. Given the complete lack of impact evidence and the serious safety risk to occupants and other motorists, I am reporting this as a panoramic sunroof safety defect.

2025-12-16Crash reported2 injuries

I was attempting to leave a parking spot when while maneuvering the vehicle it suddenly and unexpectedly accelerated to a high speed into a tree. There is a police report and security video as the incident took place in a hospital parking lot. The truck is totaled and settled but insurance company not interested in liability. My wife and I were injured. I have no idea or explanation for the sudden acceleration. Nobody is investigating if there was a vehicle malfunction or not. I just want it documented somewhere in case it is happening a lot. The crash was violent and occurred from a near complete stop on a clear day with no distractions.

2025-01-01

In 2024 Ford introduced a turn detection in the F-150 (and other Ford vehicles). This feature extends the adaptive cruise control which recognizes speed limit signs and dynamically adjusts the speed control to comply with speed limits. This added Turn Detection, detects curves that have the Yellow highway curve warning signs with the small orange suggested speed limit sign below and automatically slows the vehicle down to at or below the suggested corner speed. The vehicle slowly goes through the curve and then rapidly accelerates out of the curve back the set cruise speed. This causes a huge safety issue especially on highways with higher speed limits where the suggested corner speed is substantially below the general flow of traffic. First Example of safety issue: When driving on a highway with a higher speed limit (especially 60mph or higher) with cruise control set for example to 65mph (speed traffic is naturally flowing at), entering a corner with a suggested speed sign of 55mph causes the vehicle to brake unexpectedly bringing the vehicle from 65mph+ to 52mph rapidly. This unexpected braking cause vehicles following to be caught off guard and in multiple cases almost rear end my truck. Second Example of safety issue: When driving through canyon highways in Colorado where almost every corner has a suggested corner speed, the truck is constantly braking hard into corners and rapidly accelerating out of corners. With the corners so close together in these canyon highways it creates a situation where the truck becomes difficult to steer and keep on the road because of the numerous and rapid speed changes which is very dangerous in a canyon environment. This issue has been problematic since I purchased the truck new, this behavior is acknowledged by Ford when I took it into the dealership to get it addressed and they have indicated that the functionality is working correctly and there is nothing they can do to correct it even though it's a safety issue.

2024-06-18

Multiple times the acceleration has stuck and would not release when hitting the brakes. I have to stick my foot under the accelerator and lift the petal to get acceleration to stop. Without physically lifting the petal it would appear this continues indefinitely.

The contact leases a 2024 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the vehicle was under a trial subscription for the driver assistance system BlueCruise, which included the driver-attention system. The contact stated that while driving at night and wearing his medical eyeglasses, the BlueCruise driver-attention system failed to see through the contact's eyeglasses and could not determine that the contact was awake, which caused the vehicle to jerk several times. Additionally, the messages "Watch the Road" and "Resume Control" were displayed, and the hazard lights were engaged. The contact stated that the BlueCruise system then disengaged independently, causing the Adaptive Cruise Control, the Lake Keep Assist, and the Lane Centering Assist to disengage. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring while driving. The contact stated that the BlueCruise system automatically engaged when the Adaptive Cruise Control mode was engaged and could not be overridden. The dealer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the manufacturer for assistance. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 100.

2024-04-08

Blue Cruise cannot see thru my glasses at night and constantly disengages the Cruise Control. This is currently under a trial subscription and cannot be cancelled nor can you override this feature without disengaging Lane Departure or Lane Centering, both of which are “standard” features.

2025-06-28

The vehicle lost both cruise control functions (adaptive and normal) during the drive and will only reset to normal cruise control after shutting off vehicle and restarting it. Then it will only work on normal cruise control temporarily.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
