SERVICE BRAKES

4 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2023 Chevrolet Blazer frequently report issues with the vehicle's braking system, particularly in wet or slippery conditions. Common symptoms include the brake pedal traveling to the floor without effectively slowing the vehicle, and the ABS system activating primarily on the front wheels, leading to sliding and reduced braking action from the rear wheels. These issues have been reported at varying mileages, including one instance at 34,000 miles. Two complaints involve crashes, one resulting in an injury, highlighting potential safety risks. Used car buyers should be aware of these braking performance concerns, especially in adverse weather conditions.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING (3 complaints)

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

3 complaints

Owners of the 2023 Chevrolet Blazer report issues with the vehicle's exterior lighting, specifically the headlights. Complaints frequently mention a dark shadow or circle on the headlight and inadequate illumination on the driver's side, limiting visibility to about 30 feet and making it difficult to see road markings at night. These issues typically arise around 5,000 to 14,000 miles. Additionally, there is a report of the power lift tailgate closing unexpectedly, resulting in a minor injury. While no crashes or fires are reported, these issues could affect nighttime driving safety.

3 complaints total1 injury
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE (3 complaints)

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

3 complaints

Owners of the 2023 Chevrolet Blazer report issues with the Forward Collision Avoidance system, particularly involving unexpected activations. Complaints frequently mention the Automatic Emergency Braking System engaging without any obstruction, causing the vehicle to stop abruptly. This issue is noted both during regular driving and while making turns, with one report indicating the problem occurred at approximately 20,000 miles. The sudden and unwarranted braking raises safety concerns, as it could potentially lead to rear-end collisions or accidents during turns. Multiple owners describe these activations as occurring without warning lights or identifiable reasons, and service inspections often fail to replicate the issue.

3 complaints total
STEERING (3 complaints)

STEERING

3 complaints

Owners of the 2023 Chevrolet Blazer report issues primarily related to steering and lane assist features. Complaints frequently mention the Lane Keep Assist system incorrectly steering the vehicle, sometimes causing it to veer left despite being in the correct lane, and a loss of power steering assist, often after encountering road imperfections like potholes. Additionally, a few owners describe sporadic failures where the vehicle does not engage in drive or reverse, and instances of the steering wheel pulling unexpectedly, leading to loss of control. These issues are noted at low mileages, around 8,500 miles or shortly after purchase, with some safety implications such as spinning out of control on highways. Buyers should be aware of these potential steering and electronic system malfunctions when considering this model.

3 complaints total

The contact owns a 2023 Chevrolet Blazer. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 MPH, the vehicle experienced unintended acceleration and the speed increased to over 70 MPH. The contact indicated that while depressing the brake pedal the vehicle failed to slow as needed and the parking brake was activated to eventually stop the vehicle. The vehicle was later towed to the local dealer who was unable to determine or confirm the unintended acceleration failure. The contact was informed that the brake rotors and brake pads needed to be replaced due to excessive wear. The contact stated that during a previous unintended acceleration failure, the speed was reduced while depressing the brake pedal; however, the vehicle would accelerate when the brake pedal was released. How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
