UNKNOWN OR OTHER

4 complaintsSafety-related

Owners report two main issues with the 2024 Tesla Model X in the "UNKNOWN OR OTHER" category. First, multiple complaints highlight difficulties with the new touch screen turn signal buttons on the steering wheel. These buttons are reportedly hard to use without taking eyes off the road, particularly when the steering wheel is not perfectly straight, and visibility issues arise in certain lighting conditions. Second, an incident involving the Full Self-Driving mode resulted in a crash, where the driver was unable to override the vehicle's direction and braking system. These issues are mentioned without specific mileage, but they raise safety implications related to unintended stops and potential control loss.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

3 complaints

Owners report frequent issues with the 2024 Tesla Model-X involving the forward collision avoidance system, particularly when adaptive cruise control is engaged. Common symptoms include abrupt braking or slowing down by 5-15 MPH, even in the absence of obstacles, which is noted to occur daily or multiple times a week, primarily during highway driving. Another issue involves unexpected self-movement when the vehicle is in reverse with the steering wheel at full lock, acknowledged by Tesla as a software characteristic under investigation. These problems have led to several close calls with other drivers, indicating potential safety risks, particularly in environments requiring precise vehicle control. Buyers should be aware of these recurring issues and the potential for future software updates to address them.

SUSPENSION

3 complaints

Owners report several issues with the 2024 Tesla Model-X suspension system. Complaints frequently mention problems with warning lights such as "Stability Control Disabled" and the Air Suspension System warning, alongside symptoms like unresponsive acceleration, vehicle rollback on inclines, and vibrations during braking. These issues often arise shortly after purchase, with some occurring as early as the drive home. Safety implications are significant, as owners describe incidents like tire blowouts on freeways and propulsion failures that can lead to loss of control. Multiple owners note substantial repair costs and unresolved problems despite service center visits, which is critical information for potential buyers considering this model.

AIR BAGS (2 complaints)

AIR BAGS

2 complaints

Owners of the 2024 Tesla Model-X report issues with the airbag and seatbelt systems, specifically involving error messages and sensor malfunctions. One common complaint is the persistent "Rear right safety restraint system fault" warning, which appears on the dashboard since vehicle delivery, indicating a potential malfunction with the airbag or seatbelt system for the rear right seat. Another issue involves the passenger seat, where the seatbelt warning system fails to activate when the seatbelt is unbuckled, and the passenger airbag remains off even when occupied. These problems have been observed shortly after purchase, with one owner noting the issue since April 2024. The complaints highlight potential safety risks, as the malfunctioning systems could compromise passenger protection.

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding ongoing safety and service issues with my 2024 Tesla Model X. This is the third Tesla vehicle we’ve owned, and while our previous two vehicles performed excellently, this one has presented serious and recurring problems with the Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. Since the second service visit, we have experienced four separate incidents in which the vehicle has either driven off the road or abruptly slammed on the brakes without warning. Despite two prior service appointments at the Tesla Service Center in Sarasota, FL, these issues remain unresolved. We also scheduled a third appointment, which Tesla later cancelled.

Turn signal buttons do not work for short periods of time while driving. It is available for inspection upon request. I am unable to signal for merging and turning which is unsafe. The problem was not reproduced, but was confirmed. Yes the vehicle has been inspected by the manufacturer and corrective action was taken. However the issue has not been fixed. No other warning lights, symptoms, or messages.

POWER TRAIN (1 complaints)

POWER TRAIN

Tesla remotely blocks a car powertrain without warning if a service invoice wasn’t paid before leaving a service center. This poses a safety risk because the car might unexpectedly become non-driving, such as after returning from a hike with young kids in a remote area, without water, food, or medications. To reproduce this issue, follow these steps: 1. Leave a Tesla service before a service or part is charged to the card on file (this can happen for various reasons). 2. Park the car in an underground parking garage or a remote area with no cellular connectivity. 3. Attempt to return home. The result is that the car will be blocked by an unknown PIN, even if the invoice was automatically charged to the card on file while driving. Without Internet connectivity, it’s impossible to work around the PIN. The car has be towed to an area with cellular connectivity to resolve the issue.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

2024-07-29Crash reported

On July 29, 2024, when my husband backed the vehicle out of the garage slowly, the vehicle suddenly accelerated and it hit the stone column causing a big damage to the car. I believe the pedal speed control and emergency brake have problems. When I reported to Tesla, they said the vehicle was not at fault. They said the issue had been resolved remotely by the engineer and cancelled my service appointment. When I asked for the engineer report, Tesla rep told me to download the data report. After I downloaded the data report, it shows no data 2 hours before and after the time of the incident. When I tried to retrieve the video on the replay function in the vehicle, the video was not there anymore. Fortunately, my husband recorded the video on his phone and I have a copy of the video. I feel very disappointed and frustrated with how Tesla handled the issue. If they are not at fault, how come the data report and video are not available? I filed a claim under my auto insurance policy and got the vehicle fixed. This sudden unintended acceleration happened to me back in June when the vehicle accelerated by itself to 41mph. My daughter, who was sitting next to me in the front passenger seat, saw my foot was in the air but the vehicle kept moving at 41mph. We were so shocked and I had to use both feet to step on the brake to stop the vehicle. Tesla eventually replaced the steering column control in the beginning of July. Then, on July 29, the sudden acceleration happened again to my husband. This safety issue needs to be addressed by Tesla more seriously. I should at least get a written explanation of what happened and not just a phone call telling me the vehicle was not at fault. Since the damage to vehicle is fixed now, we would drive the vehicle more often. I don't want this sudden unintended acceleration to happen again, hitting something or someone on the road!

Sometimes I’m not able to activate left turn signal. It works most of the time (I would guess it works 95% of the time), sometimes it doesn’t work. Car does not have turn signal stalk, push button on steering wheel to activate turn signal.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
