FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

2 complaintsSafety-related

Owners report issues with the 2021 Toyota Prius's forward collision avoidance systems, specifically related to the Lane Keeping Assist and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC). Complaints frequently mention the Lane Keeping Assist causing the vehicle to veer towards the edge of the lane or even out of it, requiring a vehicle restart to resolve the issue. The DRCC is reported to accelerate unexpectedly when a leading vehicle changes lanes, resulting in a collision with a stopped vehicle. These issues occur intermittently and without warning indicators, posing potential safety risks such as crashes and loss of lane control. No specific mileage or timeline patterns are evident from the complaints, but the incidents highlight concerns with the vehicle's automated driving features.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

2 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2021 Toyota Prius report incidents of unintended acceleration, with two complaints involving crashes and injuries. In both cases, drivers describe the vehicle accelerating without input from the accelerator pedal and the brakes failing to respond, leading to loss of control. One incident occurred as the vehicle was transitioning from electric to gasoline power, while the other did not specify any such transition. Both vehicles had relatively low mileage, around 27,000 miles, suggesting these incidents may occur early in the vehicle's life. The safety implications are significant, as these events resulted in crashes, injuries, and potential for more severe outcomes.

2 complaints total2 crashes2 injuries

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

2 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2021 Toyota Prius report issues related to carbon monoxide seeping into the cabin and problems with the accelerator. One owner describes experiencing carbon monoxide poisoning multiple times, with increasing levels of CO detected, making the vehicle undriveable at approximately 7,000 miles. Another owner reports a sticky accelerator that caused the vehicle to lurch forward, resulting in a crash into a wall and airbag deployment while parking. This incident marks the second occurrence for the owner, indicating a potential pattern. The safety implications include the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and loss of vehicle control leading to crashes.

POWER TRAIN (2 complaints)

POWER TRAIN

2 complaints

Owners of the 2021 Toyota Prius report two distinct power train issues. One complaint describes rodent damage due to unprotected essential components, leading to potential operational disruptions. Another owner reports unintended vehicle movement after shifting into park, resulting in a minor collision, and also mentions the vehicle's failure to start while connected to a charger. This latter issue is noted at approximately 80,000 miles. These issues could have safety implications, particularly the unintended movement, which resulted in a collision. Buyers should be aware of these potential power train vulnerabilities when considering this vehicle.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
