TIRES

2 complaints

Owners of the 2021 Kia Sedona frequently report issues with the original equipment Kumho tires, specifically involving belt failures and tread separation. Symptoms commonly described include broken tire belts and abnormal vibrations while driving, with one owner noting these issues occurring during long-distance travel. The complaints indicate that these problems arise around 16,760 to 19,191 miles, with one instance of tread separation occurring at an unspecified mileage. No crashes or loss of control are reported, but the need for emergency tire replacements suggests potential safety implications. Buyers should be aware of these tire issues and consider inspecting the tires for similar problems if purchasing a used model.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

2 complaints

Owners report recurring issues with the electrical system of the 2021 KIA Sedona, particularly frequent headlight failures occurring approximately every six months. They also describe engine performance problems, such as sputtering or shuttering during acceleration, which persist despite multiple inspections and repairs. One complaint highlights a potentially hazardous situation where the engine began knocking without warning lights, necessitating a tow in a construction zone with no safe shoulder. These issues appear to have been present since purchase, and the lack of resolution or manufacturer responsibility is a notable concern for potential buyers.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

2 complaints

Owners of the 2021 Kia Sedona report issues with vehicle speed control, specifically involving sudden deceleration and failure to accelerate. One complaint describes the vehicle intermittently refusing to accelerate or shift, with no warning lights, requiring a restart to temporarily resolve the issue. Another complaint details unexpected sharp deceleration while using cruise control, accompanied by multiple dashboard alerts, including collision warnings. Both incidents highlight potential safety risks, such as difficulty merging into traffic or sudden braking. These issues occur intermittently, with no specific mileage range mentioned, but involve situations that could pose serious safety hazards.

Vehicle is easily stolen, and is a safety risk for others. Kia's are getting stolen at an alarming rate and should be recalled! Not only are they getting stolen but they pose a major safety risk because the people stealing them are crashing them, running from police, etc. Damage to my own property as well as others (mine had mysterious damage but I have no idea who or what they hit). Something must be done!

I was in a car wreck and my air bags did not deploy and my seat belt did not lock. The other vehicle involved in the car accident immediately deployed its airbags. I did not ask for an ambulance because I do not know if my insurance covers it so I went personally to the emergency room after the accident.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
