SERVICE BRAKES

4 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2024 BMW 4-Series frequently report brake system failures, with symptoms including the vehicle not stopping as expected and extended braking distances. Several complaints highlight unresolved recall issues related to missing brake system parts, which some owners were unaware of until months after purchase. These issues are noted in vehicles with low mileage, including one with just 100 miles. The safety implications are significant, with one report involving a crash during an attempted stop. For potential buyers, the unresolved recall and associated safety risks are critical considerations.

4 complaints total1 crash

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

3 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2024 BMW 4-Series report issues primarily related to sudden sunroof explosions and unexplained acceleration. One owner describes a sunroof that suddenly shattered with a loud noise while driving, causing glass to appear as if it had erupted, though no injuries occurred due to the sunroof liner being closed. Another complaint involves a crash where the vehicle accelerated unexpectedly while parking, resulting in an impact with a wall and one reported injury, with the brakes failing to stop the car. Additionally, a recurring issue is noted with a warning message indicating "inability to drive," leading to steering difficulties and system shutdowns, which has required towing on multiple occasions. These issues present potential safety risks, including loss of control and accidents, and involve vehicles with varying timelines and usage conditions.

3 complaints total1 crash1 injury

BACK OVER PREVENTION

2 complaints

Owners report issues with the back over prevention systems in the 2024 BMW 4-Series, specifically noting a lack of audible alerts when reversing. Complaints frequently mention that the rear cross traffic alert system does not provide timely notifications of approaching vehicles unless they are traveling over 7 mph, and even then, alerts occur only seconds before potential impact. Additionally, owners describe the absence of alerts for pedestrians or small children behind the vehicle. These issues are reported from the time of purchase, suggesting they are not related to vehicle age or mileage. Safety implications include the risk of collisions due to insufficient warning of obstacles or moving hazards.

I was driving on an empty highway at about 55 mph and all of a sudden heard a loud bang, after i pulled over i saw that my sunroof was shattered, bmw declined a warranty on it but the car had only 3k miles on it, prior to that accident i was hearing some squeaking noises from my sunroof when it was in fully closed position. After taking it to the dealership not only they declined on the warranty but they failed to investigate and explain the cause stating it was probably the rock hit the glass the caused the problem, i taped the sunroof after it shattered and after i was picking up the car the tape was still there and was at the same condition prior leaving the car there, so that tells me that they didn't even chacket it.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
