2024 BMW 4-Series Common Problems by Component
17 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
SERVICE BRAKES
4 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2024 BMW 4-Series frequently report brake system failures, with symptoms including the vehicle not stopping as expected and extended braking distances. Several complaints highlight unresolved recall issues related to missing brake system parts, which some owners were unaware of until months after purchase. These issues are noted in vehicles with low mileage, including one with just 100 miles. The safety implications are significant, with one report involving a crash during an attempted stop. For potential buyers, the unresolved recall and associated safety risks are critical considerations.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
3 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2024 BMW 4-Series report issues primarily related to sudden sunroof explosions and unexplained acceleration. One owner describes a sunroof that suddenly shattered with a loud noise while driving, causing glass to appear as if it had erupted, though no injuries occurred due to the sunroof liner being closed. Another complaint involves a crash where the vehicle accelerated unexpectedly while parking, resulting in an impact with a wall and one reported injury, with the brakes failing to stop the car. Additionally, a recurring issue is noted with a warning message indicating "inability to drive," leading to steering difficulties and system shutdowns, which has required towing on multiple occasions. These issues present potential safety risks, including loss of control and accidents, and involve vehicles with varying timelines and usage conditions.
BACK OVER PREVENTION
2 complaintsOwners report issues with the back over prevention systems in the 2024 BMW 4-Series, specifically noting a lack of audible alerts when reversing. Complaints frequently mention that the rear cross traffic alert system does not provide timely notifications of approaching vehicles unless they are traveling over 7 mph, and even then, alerts occur only seconds before potential impact. Additionally, owners describe the absence of alerts for pedestrians or small children behind the vehicle. These issues are reported from the time of purchase, suggesting they are not related to vehicle age or mileage. Safety implications include the risk of collisions due to insufficient warning of obstacles or moving hazards.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL (1 complaints)
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
1 complaintSafety-relatedThe contact owns a 2024 BMW 330I. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle and shifting into reverse(R), while reversing out of a parking space, the accelerator pedal was slightly depressed and the engine revved high, and the contact slightly depressed the accelerator pedal again before the vehicle suddenly unintendedly accelerated and crashed into a stone column before coming to a stop. During the crash the vehicle sustained extensive damages to the rear passenger’s side vehicle and the door. The stone column was also damaged. No injuries were reported. A Police Report was taken at the scene. The vehicle was first driven to the residence and then to the body shop the following day. The contact stated that the vehicle was currently at the Auto Body Shop being repaired. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not yet notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 8,000.

STRUCTURE (1 complaints)
STRUCTURE
1 complaintI was driving on an empty highway at about 55 mph and all of a sudden heard a loud bang, after i pulled over i saw that my sunroof was shattered, bmw declined a warranty on it but the car had only 3k miles on it, prior to that accident i was hearing some squeaking noises from my sunroof when it was in fully closed position. After taking it to the dealership not only they declined on the warranty but they failed to investigate and explain the cause stating it was probably the rock hit the glass the caused the problem, i taped the sunroof after it shattered and after i was picking up the car the tape was still there and was at the same condition prior leaving the car there, so that tells me that they didn't even chacket it.
ENGINE (1 complaints)
ENGINE
1 complaintSafety-relatedVehicle was parked at approximately 3:45 PM. While parked, the vehicle engine caught fire sometime in the next hour, approximately. Many eyewitnesses stated that nobody was seen near the vehicle as it started smoking, and then caught fire, with multiple explosions heard. The engine was completely destroyed, but the passenger cabin did not seem to be impacted. BMW has several recalls out for engines catching fire - this model was not included in this recall, but clearly needs to be.
POWER TRAIN (1 complaints)
POWER TRAIN
1 complaintThe contact owns a 2024 BMW 750E. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the high-voltage system warning light illuminated. The contact continued to drive the vehicle a short distance, and then the drive train warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the warning instructed the contact to contact the local service center. The vehicle was driven to the residence. The dealer was contacted, and the contact was informed that the vehicle was safe to drive. The contact stated that approximately three days later, while driving at an undisclosed speed with the cruise control feature enabled, the unattended driver warning light illuminated. The message indicated that 911 was being called, and the engine seized. The contact stated that the engine seized in the middle of the street. The contact stated that after waiting for several minutes, the vehicle was started and the vehicle was driven to a safe location. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the failure was not duplicated. The contact was informed that the error messages were displayed due to the way the contact was driving. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 13,100.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
Get notified when new recalls or reliability data is added for the BMW 4-Series.
No spam. Only data updates for this model.
