ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2024-2025 AUDI Q4 E-Tron SUV, AUDI Q4 E-Tron Sportback, and 2024 ID.4 vehicles. The on-board charger (OCDC) may fail and stop charging the 12-volt battery, which can result in a loss of drive power.
Consequence
A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the OCDC, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on May 20, 2025. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 or Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 93CJ. Audi's number for this recall is 93FR.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Audi) is recalling certain 2022-2024 Q4 E-TRON and Q4 E-TRON Sportback vehicles. The incorrect headlight control module software may have been installed. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

STEERING
2 complaintsSafety-relatedOn March 20, 2026, while my 2022 Audi Q4 e-tron (VIN: [XXX] ) was parked in my private garage at approximately 98% battery charge, I attempted to start the vehicle and experienced a complete electrical system failure. All electronic systems failed simultaneously, including: brake system (Brake System Failure warning displayed), parking brake sensor, traffic/charging system, power windows, and side view mirrors. The vehicle could not be placed into neutral. AAA was dispatched and the vehicle required a jump-start to the 12-volt auxiliary system before it could be moved. The vehicle was towed to Audi Beverly Hills for inspection. The dealership diagnosed the fault as: Control Module Main Processor Performance, Symptom Code 20079, per Technical Service Bulletin TSB 2074484/3. Per that TSB, the dealer was instructed by Audi of America to create a PSS (Pending Service Solution) record, erase the fault memory, and release the vehicle to me with no repair performed. The stated guidance from Audi of America to the dealer was to inform me that this is "an extremely infrequent fault" that is "being reviewed." No fix exists. No timeline for a fix has been provided. The vehicle was released to me with the underlying defect unresolved. This is a known, manufacturer-acknowledged defect with no current remedy. As a fully electric vehicle, the Q4 e-tron's braking and all safety systems are electronically dependent. A recurrence of this fault while driving presents an unreasonable safety risk. I am requesting NHTSA investigate whether TSB XXX /3 and Symptom Code 20079 warrant a formal safety recall. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The contact owned a 2024 Audi Q4 E-tron. The contact stated upon driving into the parking lot of an occupied charging station at 30-35 MPH and attempting to pull into the charging station, the vehicle accelerated unintendedly and spun several times. The contact stated that she depressed the brake pedal and attempted to steer the vehicle, but the vehicle failed to respond. The contact pressed the Push to Start button to stop the vehicle, but the passenger's side of the vehicle hit and knocked down a small tree, crashed into an embankment, and the vehicle stopped. The air bags did not deploy. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was able to exit the vehicle. There was no injury sustained. No police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to G & C Auto Body(3440 Stanley Blvd, Pleasanton, CA 94566) to be repaired. The dealer was notified of the failure and advised the contact to tow the vehicle to their location after the body repair because they would need to read the EDR to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired by G & C Auto Body and was deemed a total loss by the insurance company. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 5,000.
BACK OVER PREVENTION
2 complaintsSafety-relatedThe contact owns a 2024 Audi Q4 E-Tron. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle in drive and reverse, the audible sound to alert pedestrians that the vehicle was in motion was intermittently inaudible. The contact stated that the sound was inoperable while the vehicle was in reverse, creating a back over hazard for pedestrians. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 1,100.
On [XXX], the vehicles safety systems (emergency braking, cross traffic warning, forward collision warning) failed to function allowing the vehicle to hit a cross traffic vehicle in a parking lot. The safety system failed again after the first collision allowing the vehicle to continue driving forward to hit a second parked vehicle. Details of the incident is available by Geico claim [XXX]. The safety systems failed to mitigate a human error as they were designed to do. The consequence would have been more devastating had a person instead of a vehicle crossed in front. Geico inspected the vehicle and deemed it a total loss. I have requested Audi of America to inspect the vehicle and conduct an investigation to identify and correct the defect. They have refused to do so. No warning or symptom of any kind appeared before the failure. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
POWER TRAIN (2 complaints)
POWER TRAIN
2 complaintsI purchased a new 2024 Audi Q4 e-tron. The first malfunction occurred in January 2025 when a dashboard warning appeared stating the vehicle was “unable to read traffic or road signs.” The dealer confirmed a front-camera sensor failure and replaced the camera under Repair Order #193312 (1/17/25 – 1/29/25) at approximately 397 miles. In February 2025, the vehicle displayed repeated “drive system malfunction” warnings and would not start reliably. The dealer determined the issue was linked to the 12-volt battery and replaced it under RO #194457 (2/24/25 – 3/14/25, 866 miles). Soon after, persistent drive-system and electrical faults continued (RO #195096 and #195241 from 3/17 – 3/27 at 866–1,081 miles) but no repair was completed. On 4/10/25, an “AWD malfunction” occurred, and the vehicle was towed. Under RO #195846 (4/10/25 – 4/25/25, 1,594 miles), the front electric motor/drive unit was replaced. The vehicle remained out of service for extended periods. I was provided an EV loaner during the initial repair in January and gasoline loaner vehicles thereafter. In June 2025 (RO #198283 at 3,161 miles), a factory recall for the onboard charger was performed. The warning “Pedestrians cannot hear motor sound” appeared both before and after the motor replacement, suggesting a persistent fault in the Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS). These repeated electrical, sensor, and propulsion failures — all within 3,000 miles of use — raise concerns about the reliability and safety of the ADAS camera, drive unit, and pedestrian-alert system. Power loss and a nonfunctional pedestrian-warning feature could increase risk to the driver and others. The manufacturer has been notified, and both dealer and manufacturer-updated repair records — showing mileage inconsistencies between versions — are available for review upon request.
I am filing this complaint due to ongoing electronic and drivetrain malfunctions that may impact safe vehicle operation. AWD System Malfunction (Primary Safety Concern) The vehicle repeatedly displays four-wheel drive system malfunction warnings. I have brought the vehicle to the dealership three times for this same issue. The malfunction continues unresolved, raising concerns about traction, stability, and drivetrain reliability. Intermittent Entry Failure Biometric entry intermittently fails, forcing use of the key fob. This could delay access in emergency situations. Remote System Failures Remote vehicle functions (lock/unlock and climate control) operate inconsistently or fail entirely, often generating error messages. Audi has stated this is a system infrastructure issue with no current fix. Battery Power Inconsistency Although the battery indicates 100% charge, actual available power never reaches full output and drops shortly after driving. This creates uncertainty about vehicle performance and usable range. HUD Feature Does Not Perform as Advertised The head-up display does not show surrounding vehicle speeds as advertised, only colored indicators. This removes expected situational awareness information. Summary The vehicle exhibits repeated drivetrain warnings, electronic access failures, and inconsistent battery performance. These issues persist despite multiple service visits. I am requesting this complaint be formally recorded and investigated due to potential safety implications.
TIRES (2 complaints)
TIRES
2 complaintsOur Audi has 13k miles. We noticed large chunks of rubber pulling away on the treads with pieces large enough to put our finger into. The dealer says they have seen this problem before with this tire
The contact owns a 2024 Audi Q4 equipped with Bridgestone Tires, Tire Line: Alenza, Tire Size: 255/45/R20, DOT Number: (N/A). The contact stated that while her friend was driving at an undisclosed speed, the message "Tire Pressure Lost" was displayed. The friend pulled into a parking lot to inspect the vehicle and noticed a blowout with one of the tires. The local dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not towed to a dealer to be diagnosed. The contact stated her friend waited for towing assistance. The contact stated that all four tires were replaced, and the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 114,630. The VIN was invalid.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER (1 complaints)
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
1 complaintWhen vehicle is energized and in Neutral "gear" the vehicle makes no sound. I understand that federal safety standards indicate that when in this status, the vehicle should generate a sound so pedestrians can hear it. The vehicle does NOT generate a Vehicle Sound malfunction alert when this occurs (and it should). This condition is reproducible all the time. The service manager at Audi Dallas witnessed this condition and verified that it also occurred on a similar vehicle he had on the lot. I called NHTSA several months ago to report this, but I cannot find a record of it online so am repeating the report. If you do have a record of it, this is a redundant report.
VISIBILITY/WIPER (1 complaints)
VISIBILITY/WIPER
1 complaintThe warning labels that are posted on the front of the sun visors are a visual distraction that diminish the forward sight line of the driver. When I cover the warning label with my hand the depth of field and forward sight line is greatly improved. I removed this label from previous vehicles that I owned. However, the sticker on this vehicle is part of the visor and can not be removed. I have never read this warning label, nor has anyone in my family. In my opinion, all warnings and precautions should be placed in the owner's manual. It is impossible to place every precaution or warning on a sun visor label. The label diminishes the drivers visibility and is another item that has to be mentally and visually processed. Driving safely requires focus and concentration, this label only adds a constant distraction while driving. Removing the label or placing it on the underside of the visor would improve visibility and safety.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
