ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

36 complaintsSafety-related

Owners report frequent issues with the 2024 Kia Telluride's electrical system, particularly with the instrument cluster going completely black, leaving drivers unable to see critical information like speed, fuel levels, and other dashboard indicators. Complaints often describe these failures occurring without warning, and some mention the problem recurring even after service attempts. A significant safety implication arises from one report of a fire originating from the passenger seat, resulting in injury, and the inability to monitor vehicle operation poses potential safety risks. Complaints frequently mention the system engaging inappropriately, causing the vehicle to brake or slow down unexpectedly, even when no obstacles are present. This issue often occurs during city and highway driving, with some owners noting it happens more frequently at lower speeds or when adaptive cruise control is active. One complaint involves a crash where the forward collision warning and emergency braking systems did not activate, resulting in a collision at low speed. Many reports indicate these problems arise shortly after purchase, often within the first few months or under 3,000 miles. VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

6 complaints

Owners of the 2024 Kia Telluride report two primary issues related to vehicle speed control. The first issue involves the vehicle's cruise control system, which misinterprets speed limits, particularly near highway junctions, leading to unexpected acceleration as the system sets the cruise speed incorrectly, sometimes up to 95 mph. The second issue involves the vehicle's Snow Mode, where multiple owners describe a failure to accelerate from a stop, requiring a mode change or vehicle restart to regain functionality. These problems occur at varying mileages, with reports ranging from as low as 450 miles to over 37,000 miles. Safety implications are noted, including sudden braking due to false forward collision warnings and potential rear-end collisions, as well as loss of control in Snow Mode, which may leave drivers stranded in intersections.

Another complaint notes the right-side third-row seatbelt buckle being crushed when the seat is folded, attributed to a lack of stable anchor length. Additionally, some owners experience seatbelts unlatching unexpectedly during slow-speed maneuvers, without any warning alerts activating. A reported incident involves the bottom bolt of the second-row driver's side seatbelt coming loose and falling out. These issues are described at various mileage points, with safety implications including improper restraint and potential hazards during emergency situations.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
