11 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
8 complaintsOwners report several issues with the 2025 Honda Passport, including nighttime visibility problems and erratic driver-assistance systems, particularly during downhill driving and in low-light conditions. Complaints frequently mention the auto stop/start feature causing the engine to hesitate or fail to restart, with one incident leading to a complete vehicle disablement at an intersection. Multiple owners describe sunroof failures, with reports of the sunroof exploding or making popping noises. A few complain about the vehicle shifting into neutral unexpectedly and a strong gasoline smell when parked. These issues are noted across varying mileage, with some problems present from early ownership, and they pose potential safety risks such as impaired visibility, sudden loss of power, and unexpected vehicle behavior.
STEERING
1 complaintVehicle has 11,500 miles on it and constantly pulls to the right. Pulls harder under hard acceleration, requiring steering correction when accelerating hard and again correcting when backing off the accelerator. Have had to dealer multiple times. They claim they can't fix. Correcting to the left under load and back to the right can cause car to weave at highway speeds and cause it to be unstable. Car is available for inspection upon request.
POWER TRAIN
1 complaintThe auto stop/start feature caused my vehicle to stall in the middle of the road. I had stopped at an intersection and just as the engine shut off, traffic cleared and I went to accelerate, and the engine shut off completely. I had to shift to Park to start the engine.
SERVICE BRAKES (1 complaints)
SERVICE BRAKES
1 complaintEmergency braking system activated for no apparent reason. Traveling at freeway speeds on a straight section of freeway when braking system briefly activated. There were no other vehicles or obstructions within 200yrds that might have triggered this. Had someone else been driving or if we had been in rain or snow conditions the outcome might have been different. Vehicle was approx 3 days old when this happened and brought back to the dealer to check. They could not reproduce. There were no prior symptoms or warning lamps

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
