SERVICE BRAKES

5 complaints

Owners of the 2023 Honda Passport frequently report issues with the service brakes, particularly involving missing or improperly installed front brake caliper bolts. Symptoms commonly include loud knocking or booming noises, grinding sounds at low speeds, and brake pedal vibrations. In some cases, the emergency braking system engages unexpectedly, causing abrupt stops and potential rotor warping. These issues typically arise at mileages as low as 22 miles and up to 8,500 miles. Safety implications are significant, with reports of brake failure and loss of vehicle control, though no crashes are explicitly mentioned. Buyers should be aware of a Technical Service Bulletin related to this issue, indicating it may be a known manufacturing defect.

5 complaints total

POWER TRAIN

4 complaints

Owners report several power train issues with the 2023 Honda Passport. Common symptoms include shifting problems such as high revs and unpredictable power delivery, as well as sluggish acceleration and occasional strange sounds during acceleration. Some owners describe the transmission rolling freely on inclines, which could pose a safety risk. Additionally, there are complaints of gear changes feeling sloppy and the vehicle sometimes failing to start with the ignition button. These issues appear to manifest early in the vehicle's life, with one owner noting a "catastrophic" computer failure within the first two years, leading to a loss of power and necessitating a tow.

4 complaints total

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

4 complaints

Owners report several electrical system issues with the 2023 Honda Passport. Common problems include unexpected activation of auto-electronic braking and emissions system warnings, with some owners noting these issues arise as early as within 7,000 miles. Multiple complaints describe complete electrical failures leading to engine shutdowns, loss of power steering and brakes, and the need for towing, despite prior repairs under warranty. Additionally, adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance warning lights appear sporadically, often attributed to defective batteries that require frequent replacement. Safety implications are significant, with one report of the vehicle rolling unexpectedly despite being in Park, resulting in an injury. These issues are critical for potential buyers to consider, particularly given the low mileage at which they occur.

4 complaints total1 injury
LANE DEPARTURE (2 complaints)

LANE DEPARTURE

2 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2023 Honda Passport report issues related to the Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) and Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) that lead to sudden and unintended vehicle maneuvers. The most common symptoms include the vehicle abruptly veering into other lanes or towards the curb, with one incident resulting in a crash. These issues occur even in clear weather conditions and on visible highways. Owners frequently mention that dealership inspections fail to identify any faults, and they are informed that the system may misinterpret sensor data. Safety implications are significant, with reports of near collisions and loss of control, especially concerning for potential buyers considering the vehicle's safety systems.

2 complaints total1 crash
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL (2 complaints)

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

2 complaints

Owners report issues with the 2023 Honda Passport's vehicle speed control, particularly with the automatic braking system and transmission. Complaints frequently mention abrupt braking without obstacles, leading to several injuries, and a failure to accelerate, especially noticeable when starting from a stop on a hill. These issues have been observed shortly after purchase, with some owners noting continued problems even after recall repairs. Additionally, owners describe transmission lag and non-responsiveness, which can cause dangerous situations like near-collisions when merging into traffic. These problems present significant safety risks, including potential loss of control and physical harm to occupants.

Unexpected braking when there are no other obstacles on the road. I need to manually turnoff the collision mitigation braking system (CMBS) every time I start the vehicle. I have notified the dealer as well as Honda and have not received any solution.

The push button gearshifting. I have accidentally hit reverse about 100 times since I’ve owned this car in six months. It ended up in a rear end collision with a parked car. Then when I tried to drive forward, I backed up again. The first time was intentional backing and I didn’t see the car behind me… the second time I was attempting to drive forward and I hit the reverse button again. It was instinctual. I hit the car twice.

I have a honda passport 2023 that I bought 6 months ago. I was parking into my driveway when suddenly heard a strong noise coming from the back. I looked through my rear mirror and saw all my back windshield shattered without any object hitting it, I'm glad I wasn't driving on the fwy or my son wasn't in the back seat. I reported to honda dealer and even do they agree to do a one time no cost replacement due to low mileage. They said they haven heard any cases of this safety manufacture defect.

When I'm driving my 2023 honda passport my steering wheel vibrates/shakes feels almost like the wheel is gonna come off. When I turn my steering wheel left or right driving or parked I hear a loud knock noise coming from under the front of my car. I have had multiple things checked and looked at and brand new tires and no matter what. When I get an alignment my car still pulls one way or another. I thinks its the steering gearbox

Tread separation on one of the tires at approximately 34K miles of driving and premature tread wear. 2023 Honda Passport, bought new from Classic Honda in Orlando Florida. Dealer wouldn't report it to Continental Tires and quoted me to install 2 new tires from the same brand (Continental) and after charging me alignment (that didn't solve the problem on my first visit).

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
