POWER TRAIN

31 complaintsSafety-related

Owners report that the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse frequently experiences a "Shift to Park" issue where the vehicle does not recognize it is in park, preventing the engine from fully shutting off. This issue is noted across various mileages, with some reports mentioning it as early as 22,168 miles and others around 85,000 miles. Symptoms include the vehicle's dashboard displaying a "Shift to Park" message, the radio and lights remaining active, and the potential risk of the vehicle rolling away if the parking mechanism fails. Additionally, some owners describe transmission-related problems such as shuddering during acceleration and unusual sounds, often leading to recommendations for transmission flushes or replacements. These issues present potential safety concerns, with one report involving a crash and four injuries, indicating the importance of thorough inspection before purchase.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

17 complaints

Owners report two prevalent issues with the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse. The first involves a "shift to park" error message, where the vehicle fails to recognize it is in park, preventing the car from shutting off or locking, and sometimes resulting in the vehicle rolling unexpectedly. This issue is noted by multiple owners, often after the vehicle is placed in park, and has led to at least one reported injury. The second issue involves the exhaust system, with several complaints of cracked or separated exhaust pipes and brackets, which some owners link to a previous recall. These issues are often identified early in the vehicle's life, with some owners experiencing them shortly after purchase. Both issues have potential safety implications, particularly the "shift to park" problem, which can lead to unintended vehicle movement.

17 complaints total1 injury

ENGINE

8 complaints

Owners of the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse frequently report issues with the exhaust system, particularly involving cracks and leaks at the exhaust pipes and brackets. Complaints often describe symptoms such as loud exhaust noises, hissing sounds, and visible exhaust leaks, with some reports indicating rust and broken welds. These issues are noted to cause a loss of engine power and backpressure, making the vehicle undriveable in some cases. While specific mileage is not consistently mentioned, some reports indicate problems occurring shortly after purchase or at relatively low mileage. Safety concerns are highlighted, with owners mentioning the potential for exhaust fumes entering the cabin and the risk of components detaching onto the roadway, though no crashes or fires are reported in the complaints.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM (7 complaints)

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

7 complaints

Owners of the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse frequently report issues with the vehicle's electrical system, specifically problems related to the vehicle not recognizing when it is in the Park position, which prevents the engine from turning off. This issue is described as intermittent and occurs even when the gear shift indicates Park, posing potential safety concerns. Another common issue is the failure of the telecommunications control module, affecting OnStar functionality, which owners note as a safety concern in emergencies. Additionally, multiple complaints describe the radio and instrument cluster turning off unexpectedly, with some owners experiencing this issue as early as 6,000 miles. These electrical problems sometimes require repeated dealership visits without resolution, and some owners mention being stranded or nearly involved in collisions due to malfunctioning systems.

7 complaints total
SERVICE BRAKES (5 complaints)

SERVICE BRAKES

5 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse frequently report issues with the service brakes, primarily involving grinding noises and brake failure. Several complaints describe brakes that make a grinding sound, sometimes accompanied by a failure to stop the vehicle effectively, even at low speeds. One owner mentions a crash occurring when the brake pedal felt stiff and did not slow the vehicle as intended. The issues appear at various stages, with some occurring shortly after purchase and others around 20,600 miles. These symptoms suggest potential safety implications, particularly regarding the vehicle's ability to stop reliably. Buyers should be aware of these reported brake concerns when considering this model.

5 complaints total1 crash
EXTERIOR LIGHTING (3 complaints)

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

3 complaints

Owners of the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse frequently report issues with the vehicle's exterior lighting, specifically the headlights. Complaints consistently mention that the low positioning of the headlights results in poor road illumination, particularly in conditions involving dips, hills, rain, and snow. Drivers describe a distinct horizontal beam of light that fails to adequately illuminate the road ahead, especially on uneven surfaces, and does not effectively activate reflectors on parked cars or illuminate pedestrians. This reduced visibility reportedly necessitates frequent use of high beams and can lead to potentially unsafe situations, although no accidents have been reported. These issues are noted across various driving conditions and do not appear to be linked to specific mileage or time in service.

3 complaints total
STEERING (2 complaints)

STEERING

2 complaints

Owners of the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse report issues related to the steering system, with complaints frequently mentioning grinding noises and instances of the steering wheel pulling unexpectedly. One owner describes a severe safety concern with the vehicle abruptly stopping at highway speeds, accompanied by a red dashboard warning light. Another owner notes a failure of the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system and a warning indicating reduced steering capability. These issues are reported to occur within the first year of ownership and at relatively low mileage, around 8,574 miles. The described symptoms suggest potential safety risks, particularly regarding sudden loss of vehicle control.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
