VISIBILITY/WIPER

53 complaints

Owners report significant visibility issues with the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox-EV due to glare from the dashboard reflecting onto the windshield. Complaints frequently mention that the dashboard's design and material cause an intense and distracting glare, especially in sunny conditions, making it difficult to see the road, pedestrians, and other vehicles. This issue is described as occurring consistently during daylight hours, with some reports indicating that it nearly led to accidents. Additionally, one complaint highlights that the side windows are deeply tinted, causing further visibility problems at night. These issues are noted by owners as safety hazards, with some instances of emergency braking systems activating to prevent collisions.

53 complaints total

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

13 complaints

Owners report two primary issues with the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox-EV in the unknown or other category. First, multiple complaints describe a severe glare from the dashboard reflecting onto the windshield, impairing visibility, particularly in bright sunlight or under street lamps. This glare has reportedly led to near-accidents, as drivers struggle to see pedestrians and other vehicles. Second, several owners mention problems with the turn signal stalk, where the right turn signal inadvertently activates the left signal after completing a turn, causing confusion for other drivers. Additionally, issues with automatic emergency braking engaging unnecessarily and instrument cluster failures are noted, although less frequently. These problems are reported early in ownership, with no specific mileage patterns emerging.

13 complaints total

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

9 complaints

Owners report that the forward collision avoidance system in the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV frequently engages the automatic emergency braking (AEB) without an apparent need, often resulting in abrupt stops. Complaints frequently mention that this occurs at varying speeds, including low-speed stop-and-go traffic and highway conditions, and can lead to near-miss incidents or potential crashes. Several owners describe instances where the system activates without visual or audible warnings, and in some cases, the system remains engaged for extended periods. A few reports connect these issues to software updates or Super Cruise disengagement, with some vehicles experiencing brake lock-up or system shutdowns. These patterns suggest potential safety implications, including loss of control or increased risk of collisions, particularly if the system activates unexpectedly.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM (7 complaints)

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

7 complaints

Owners report several electrical system issues with the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox-EV. A recurring problem involves the automatic emergency braking system engaging unexpectedly, even at high speeds, potentially leading to loss of control or near-accidents. Complaints frequently mention dashboard and infotainment system malfunctions, including overheating and unexpected reboots, with some owners noting the dashboard going dark while driving. Multiple reports also describe high voltage battery warnings and related thermal management failures, which some owners experienced before reaching 5,000 miles. These issues present significant safety implications, as they can affect vehicle control and, in some cases, may pose a fire risk.

7 complaints total
SERVICE BRAKES (6 complaints)

SERVICE BRAKES

6 complaintsSafety-related

Owners report that the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox-EV experiences issues with unexpected braking, particularly when reversing or during high-speed driving. Complaints frequently mention the brakes engaging without warning, sometimes accompanied by screeching sounds, which can be alarming and has led to a crash in one instance. Symptoms include the vehicle braking hard on its own, disengaging cruise control at highway speeds, and the Automatic Emergency Braking system activating without clear obstruction. These issues have been noted in vehicles with mileage as low as 3,000 miles. The safety implications include a potential for crashes due to sudden stops or brake failures, as one owner experienced a collision when the brakes did not respond while parking. Buyers should be aware of these reported issues, especially in relation to the vehicle's braking systems and the availability of service for these concerns.

6 complaints total1 crash
EXTERIOR LIGHTING (5 complaints)

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

5 complaints

Owners report several issues with the exterior lighting of the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox-EV. A common problem involves the headlamp wells filling with snow during winter driving, which diminishes the effectiveness of the headlights as the LED lights do not generate enough heat to melt the snow. This requires drivers to stop and manually clear the snow, potentially in hazardous conditions. Another frequently mentioned issue is dashboard glare, which can impair visibility. Additionally, there are reports of the turn signals malfunctioning, with the left signal sometimes activating inadvertently after the right signal disengages. These issues may present safety risks, particularly in adverse weather or dense traffic situations.

5 complaints total
BACK OVER PREVENTION (3 complaints)

BACK OVER PREVENTION

3 complaints

Owners of the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox-EV report issues with the vehicle's braking systems activating unexpectedly. Complaints frequently mention the vehicle braking automatically when reversing or driving forward, even when no obstacles are present. Symptoms include sudden and forceful stops without prior warning, leading to concerns about potential rear-end collisions and physical discomfort for occupants. These issues often occur shortly after purchase, within the first few months of ownership. No crashes have been reported, but the unexpected braking poses a safety risk, particularly if it occurs at higher speeds or in traffic.

3 complaints total
STEERING (3 complaints)

STEERING

3 complaints

Owners report a recurring issue with the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox-EV's turn signal system, specifically following right turns. Complaints frequently mention that after completing a right turn, the turn signal stalk can inadvertently activate the left turn signal for a few blinks. This is described as occurring when the stalk returns too forcefully to its neutral position, causing confusion for both the driver and surrounding traffic. No specific mileage range is noted, but the issue appears consistent across multiple instances and is not unique to individual vehicles. While no crashes have been reported, the unintentional signaling poses potential safety risks by misleading other drivers.

3 complaints total
VISIBILITY (2 complaints)

VISIBILITY

2 complaints

Owners of the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV report visibility issues primarily involving the windshield. Complaints frequently mention lines appearing across the windshield, which obstruct driving visibility. Additionally, both reports note significant dashboard reflection on the windshield when driving under sunlight, severely reducing visibility. Another issue described is the reduced travel of the front driver's side windshield wiper, particularly affecting visibility in rainy conditions. These problems are noted at low mileages, with one report specifying approximately 300 miles, and have not resulted in crashes or loss of control according to the data provided.

I was driving South on interstate 55 near Arnold Missouri in adaptive cruise control mode at approximately 65 mph when the car braked suddenly and came to a complete stop on the interstate. Car would not go forward after stopping. Turned the car off and restarted and the car now would drive normally. Have not used ACC since and car has behaved normally. Took the car to dealership in Farmington, MO and they reported no error codes and no recalls. I had driven over 13,000 miles in the car without any incidents previously.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
