POWER TRAIN

3 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2020 BMW X1 report several power train issues, with common complaints involving drivetrain malfunction warnings and sudden loss of power, often linked to wastegate actuator turbo failure. One owner notes a fire originating from the engine area, indicating a significant safety risk. Other symptoms described include loud noises from the vehicle and recurring error codes, with one owner experiencing these issues over several months and multiple service visits. These complaints suggest potential reliability concerns, particularly for buyers considering vehicles with a history of drivetrain warnings or turbo-related issues.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

2 complaints

Owners of the 2020 BMW X1 report issues with the fuel/propulsion system, primarily involving the fuel tank and related components. One complaint describes a punctured fuel tank leading to power loss, attributed to its location and lack of protection, while another details a Check Engine light indicating fuel in the NVLD system, requiring replacement of multiple components. The latter owner denies overfilling the tank, a suggested cause by the dealership. These issues could potentially lead to safety risks, including power loss and the possibility of vehicle fires. No specific mileage or timeline patterns are evident from the complaints, but these issues could be of concern for potential buyers, especially regarding design changes in newer models.

2 complaints total

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

2 complaints

Owners report two distinct issues with the 2020 BMW X1. One involves the sunroof, which some describe as exploding spontaneously without any prior warning or impact, leading to shattered glass. Another issue involves the trunk cover, where owners frequently mention finding tiny shards of glass-like material that embed into the skin, causing significant pain and difficulty in removal. These complaints include reports of injuries, indicating potential safety implications for users. No specific mileage or time frame is provided in the complaints to suggest when these issues typically arise.

2 complaints total2 injuries
ENGINE (2 complaints)

ENGINE

2 complaints

Owners report issues with the 2020 BMW X1's lower radiator being susceptible to damage from road debris, specifically rocks, due to the absence of a protective guard. Complaints frequently mention that this leads to a loss of coolant, with one owner noting the potential risk of engine seizure if not promptly addressed. Both complaints involve incidents occurring on the same date and location, suggesting a specific vulnerability rather than a recurring pattern across different scenarios. The absence of a radiator guard is highlighted as a known condition, but replacement parts that include the guard are not covered under warranty, leading owners to rely on insurance for repairs. Potential buyers should be aware of the risk of coolant loss and its safety implications, particularly at highway speeds.

I got my BMW X1 in December of 2020 and currently has 21,000 miles. I've notice unusual wear and tear on the driver side seatbelt so I brought it into the dealer but all they said was that it needs to be replaced. I don't think this is a normal wear and tear because as I've said, I only drove this vehicle for 21,000 miles. The tear is expanding and I believe this can be a serious safety issue during an accident or sudden stops. I was concerned if this was an issue to similar vehicles or if it's just my vehicle.

On 7/1/22, my Vehicle Alert came on advising that the front brake pads need replacement and to schedule an appointment within 1,000 miles. I called the same day to schedule an appointment with my local dealer. However, the next available date was on 7/13/22. I specifically requested an earlier date, but that was the only available slot they had. I brought my vehicle in on 7/13/22 (alert now says schedule an appointment within 800 miles so i had driven 200 miles) and was given an estimate to replace the front brake pads. On the same day, i get a call from the dealer service advisor that the front rotors also needs replacement as they were damaged due to continued driving with worn down brake pads. They also advised the engine mount was cracked and leaking. My safety concern is that the alert should have came on sooner as I called to schedule an appointment the same day the alert came on but the only available time for almost two weeks later. There should have been a more urgent alert (i.e. replace within 50 miles) as I would have then made separate arrangements immediately. Alternatively, the alert should come on much earlier in the brake pads' wear detection. Instead, I was unknowingly driving my vehicle with dangerously damaged rotors due to the false sense of safety as the alert said schedule appointment within the next 1000 miles and I had only driven 200 miles. This put not only my safety at risk but others on the road as well should my brakes have failed. A crash would have been more dangerous in light of the cracked engine mount and leak. I understand brakes are wear and tear and customer pay but i feel that the alert system design and logic needs to be looked at as non-savvy drivers rely on them to make appointments accordingly.

I was in a front end crash at approximately 30 to 35 miles per hour and airbags did not deploy nor did the seatbelt lock. My chest hit the steering wheel and I was transported by EMS to hospital. Nothing was broken. I had a bruise upper right chest but my pain is in my sternum which is not visibly bruised but is very sore and my activity and mobility is impaired. My radiator was busted and car was towed by local police department to tow yard which is where it is right now. Soon to be moved to a repair center as the police report becomes available. It has not been inspected at this point. Just want to make the issue known.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
