38 complaintsSafety-related

Owners report recurring issues with the service brakes on the 2023 BMW X1, primarily involving a recall related to the electronic stability control and hydraulic brakes. Complaints frequently mention an inability to obtain necessary recall repairs due to unavailable parts, with some owners waiting over a year. Symptoms described include unintended electronic parking brake engagement and brake pedal resistance, often occurring around 11,000 to 29,000 miles. Although there is only one reported crash, the potential for brake assist failure and ABS issues raises safety implications, particularly during emergency braking. Used car buyers should be aware of these unresolved recall issues and the potential impact on vehicle safety and resale value.

ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)

13 complaints

Owners report that the 2023 BMW X1 experiences issues related to the electronic stability control and service brakes, with multiple complaints about the unavailability of recall repair parts. Symptoms frequently mentioned include brake pedal failures, such as the pedal going to the floor or requiring excessive pressure, and warning lights for brakes and engine being illuminated. Some owners describe losing control of the vehicle or the vehicle failing to respond to braking inputs, particularly at mileages around 7,000 to 14,000. Safety implications include potential loss of control and the inability to stop the vehicle, with some instances requiring towing. Buyers should be aware of these reported issues and the ongoing wait for recall repairs due to unavailable parts.

POWER TRAIN

5 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2023 BMW X1 frequently report issues related to delayed acceleration from a stop, with symptoms including a noticeable lag before the vehicle responds to the accelerator, followed by a sudden surge of power. This pattern is described as random and unpredictable, often occurring when attempting to merge onto highways or make turns, which can create hazardous situations. Some complaints also mention the vehicle rolling backward or forward on inclines before engaging the intended gear, despite software updates aimed at addressing these issues. One incident involved a crash into a house due to the vehicle lurching forward unexpectedly after the auto-start feature activated. These problems are typically reported at low mileages, around 500 miles, and have not been resolved by dealer interventions, according to the owners.

AIR BAGS (4 complaints)

AIR BAGS

4 complaints

Owners of the 2023 BMW X1 frequently report issues related to air bag recall repairs, specifically citing delays in the availability of replacement parts. Complaints commonly mention receiving recall notifications but experiencing extended wait times for the necessary parts to become available, with no failures reported at the time of filing. One owner notes the illumination of the Driver Restraint System Malfunction warning light at approximately 2,000 miles, with diagnosis indicating that multiple air bags require replacement. While no crashes, fires, or loss of control are mentioned, the recurring theme is the prolonged timeline for recall repairs, which may be a consideration for potential buyers assessing maintenance and repair expectations.

Right around mid-December 2025, I parked my car, and went to bed, just to wake up on a notification that my battery was depleted and I should go to a service center. I went to the nearest BMW dealership, and had them check out the issue. They said it was caused by 2 incidents where I the car's engine was off with key on for 9 minutes and 10 minutes respectively. and therefore it is my fault and the battery is damaged. So, they had to replace it, and they charged me $1,100 for it. I still don't see how that's my fault, because when I put the car in parking and not exit, the engine turns itself off anyways, but entertainment stays on.

BMW has a voice assistant "BMW Assistant" which I have turned off. I verified the setting through a call today with Kingsley of the BMW Genius hotline, 844-443-6487. The problem I am experiencing is that although turned off, the Assistant keeps trying to turn itself on by asking permission which I am driving. One has to either press a button or repeatedly speak to it to try and stop its message. Not only irritating, but it happens during turn by turn navigation and causes distracted driving., I came close to having a collision a couple of times when this happened. Note that Kingsley confirmed that it would continue to occur in the future at random times and there is no way to turn it off. I am assuming at this time it is just a way to try and collect more information to sell. If the Assistant tried to do this when the car is started and stationary, while still irritating, there would be no distracted driving. this a a problem waiting to happen. Upon straight line driving, vehicle has abruptly cut to the left into the opposing driving lane. Had another vehicle been approaching, could have resulted in a collision. It has occurred randomly on three different occasions over two month period. Have been trying to get with the dealer for a week. They don't seem to consider it urgent. So far, there have been no incidents requiring police or visible signs of damage. Abrupt maneuver was preceded by a mechanical "ping" sound followed by a sensation the car was being struck from behind. The incident has made me concerned to drive the car as well as reluctant to keep it even if dealer finds something he can fix.

The car has a serious turbo lag. When I stepped on the gas it would take a few seconds for the car to move. I was very nervous driving it, as it was difficult to judge when I could enter or cross a stream of traffic safely. This is a serious safety issue. The dealership offered to come to my home with a loaner and have one of their employees accompany me while I drove the car to illustrate the issue. The person readily agreed several times there was an issue in the way the turbo or transmission was functioning. He loaded the car on the flatbread to the dealership and left me with a loaner. After checking out the issue with my brand new car the dealer agreed it was a problem. They said they would check for a software update, which they did and installed it. They held it again overnight to test it the next day after the software update. The service manager advised that the software update did not fix the issue, and BMW told them that the car was designed to work that way. After hearing this I looked online for people with the same issue, and I readily found several examples including a person that regularly reviews new cars in video and said the turbo lag was dangerous and he would not be surprised if there was a recall in the future. How can the service department see a problem and the manufacturer say it was designed to work that way? If so, customer should be advised, hey when you step on the gas the car may not move for a few seconds!

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
