ENGINE

3 complaints

Owners report that the 2020 Toyota Supra, equipped with the B58 Technical Update engine, experiences issues related to the variable displacement oil pump, particularly in cold weather. Complaints frequently mention the internal thermoplastic component of the oil pump fracturing, leading to sudden loss or instability of oil pressure, often without warning. Typical symptoms include failed electronic oil level readings, abnormal pressure behavior, and drivetrain malfunction messages, with some vehicles becoming disabled shortly after startup or while driving. These failures are most commonly reported during cold starts in low temperatures and around 25,000 miles. The safety implications are significant, as the sudden loss of oil pressure can result in engine shutdown or severe mechanical damage, potentially leaving occupants stranded in hazardous conditions.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

3 complaints

Owners of the 2020 Toyota Supra report several issues related to the electrical system. One common problem involves the blend door actuator, which affects the climate control system by preventing the proper mixing of hot and cold air, leading to insufficient heating and defrosting capabilities on the driver's side. This issue can pose a safety risk in colder climates due to impaired windshield defogging. Another reported issue is the rear hatch failing to open both electrically and manually, which could pose a safety concern if someone becomes trapped in the trunk. Additionally, some owners describe the dashboard going completely blank, temporarily losing all driving information and reducing driver assistance features, though this issue appears unresolved by dealers. These complaints do not specify mileage, but they highlight potential safety implications buyers should consider.

3 complaints total

STEERING

3 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2020 Toyota Supra report issues with the steering system, particularly involving loss of control and steering wheel vibrations. Complaints frequently mention incidents where the steering wheel becomes difficult to turn or seizes entirely, with some owners noting that the power steering malfunction warning indicator illuminates. These issues are reported at low mileages, with one case occurring at just 197 miles and another at 1,100 miles. Safety implications are significant, with one reported crash where the steering allegedly took control, resulting in a collision with a tree and an injury. Buyers should be aware of these steering-related issues, especially given the potential for loss of vehicle control.

The vehicle Parking / Backup / Cross Traffic assist warnings do not work unless the objects are within approx 2 feet of the car. When backing up there is no warning of any on coming traffic or a child behind the car. If a individual is at the rear of the car there is no visible or audible warnings. Only warning is either seeing the individual in the rear window or on the camera. This has been brought to the manufactures attention and they say this is the normal operation. All other cars I have had cross traffic and pedestrian alerts have visual and audible alerts. The car says that it is suppose to have them.

I scheduled an appointment to get an oil change and recall issue taken care of by a Toyota dealership near me. I dropped it off in the morning and when I called to check up on it in the afternoon they did not even begin to work on the car. I had picked it up because they said they were unable to get to it. Keep in mind they were still working on other cars that were simply pulling in. I had scheduled my appointment a week prior to get this issue taken care of. Now I am putting my safety at risk because they failed to take care of the issue.

WINDSHIELD CRACKS FROM VERY VERY TINY KNICK, ABOUT THE SIZE OF 1/2 OF A GRAIN OF SALT. I AM IN MULTIPLE TOYOTA SUPRA GROUPS IN FACEBOOK AND NUMEROUS PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS ISSUE. I FEEL THE WINDSHIELD DOESN'T MEET SAFETY REGULATIONS FOR IMPACTS. THE WINDSHIELDS APPEAR TO LOOK LIKE A SINGLE PANE OF GLASS, NOT LAMINATED DOUBLE PANE.

I WAS STOPPED IN THE LEFT TURN LANE AT A RED LIGHT. THE TURN ARROW SWITCHED TO GREEN SO I TOOK THE U-TURN. I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE U-TURN GOING ABOUT 15 MPH, WHEN THE CAR BEGAN TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. THE CAR OVERSTEERED, AND THE REAR PORTION OF THE CAR KICKED OUT TO THE RIGHT SIDE. I CORRECTED BY COUNTERSTEERING AND REMOVING MY FOOT FROM THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE, CAUSING ME TO OVERSTEER TO THE LEFT SIDE THIS TIME. IN AN EFFORT TO STOP THE CAR, I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES WHILE OVERSTEERING. THIS CAUSED THE CAR TO ROTATE COUNTER CLOCKWISE, AND IMPACTED WITH THE CURB AND ENDED UP ON TOP OF THE MEDIAN. THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO THE REAR PASSENGER SUSPENSION AND BODY. TOYOTA PULLED DATA FROM THEIR ELECTRONIC DATA RECORDER, AND CONCLUDED THAT IT THERE WAS NO MALFUNCTION WITH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL OR BRAKES. I SIMPLY DO NOT AGREE WITH THIS CONCLUSION; NO EFFORTS WERE MADE TO ENSURE THAT THE COMPUTER READING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION WAS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. IT CAN BE SEEN IN THE DATA CHARTS THAT I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE WHILE THE CAR WAS ACCELERATING. ADDITIONALLY, IT INDICATES THAT MY SPEED WAS 26 MPH AT THE TIME OF IMPACT WITH A PEAK SPEED OF 36 MPH. IS IT FEASIBLE THAT ALL OF THE CONTROL ARMS, REAR DIFFERENTIAL, AXLE, AND BRAKE ROTORS COULD BE BROKEN AT THAT SPEED? IF YOU LOOK AT THE ATTACHED PICTURES, THE AXLE WAS SHEARED OFF UPON IMPACT AT 26 MPH. THIS DOESN'T ADD UP. *TR

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.

Get notified when new recalls or reliability data is added for the Toyota Supra.

No spam. Only data updates for this model.
