SEAT BELTS

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2021 Ram ProMaster City and Ram ProMaster vehicles. The seat belt automatic locking retractors may deactivate early, which can prevent the child restraint system from securing properly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

Consequence

An unsecured child restraint system can increase the risk of injury during a crash.

Remedy

Dealers will inspect and replace the seat belt retractors as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 28, 2021. Owners may contact FCA US LLC customer service at 1-800-853- 1403. FCA US LLC's number for this recall is Y61.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Ram ProMaster City vehicles. The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module may have internal damage, which could result in a loss of braking performance or autonomous braking functions.

Consequence

The loss of braking performance or autonomous braking functions can increase the risk of a vehicle crash without prior warning.

Remedy

FCA US, LLC will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ABS module, free of charge. The recall began on March 30, 2021. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403.

14 complaints

Owners of the 2021 Ram Promaster frequently report issues with backup cameras failing, with several noting the cameras either display a black screen or work intermittently. Complaints also highlight problems with cabinetry detaching in RV conversions, posing a risk of injury due to falling components. Water intrusion in the engine bay is another concern, with reports of gaps between the windshield and cowling allowing water to accumulate on electrical components. Several complaints mention these issues occurring over extended periods, with some camera failures persisting for over a year. These problems raise potential safety implications, such as reduced visibility and risk of injury from falling objects.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

13 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2021 Ram Promaster frequently report issues with the electrical system, particularly involving the backup camera and blind spot detection system. Complaints often describe the backup camera image as flickering, distorted, or going blank, especially when shifting into reverse. Similarly, the blind spot detection system is reported to disable itself unexpectedly, sometimes linked to braking or lighting conditions, which poses a potential safety risk. Additionally, one report describes a fire incident related to the vehicle's battery, highlighting a serious safety concern. These issues occur across various mileages, with some reports noting problems as early as 10,589 miles.

13 complaints total1 fire

LANE DEPARTURE

9 complaints

Owners of the 2021 Ram Promaster frequently report issues with the blind spot monitoring system, which randomly disables itself during operation. Complaints describe the system turning off without warning, often requiring manual reactivation through the control panel, and some mention it occurring more frequently in warmer weather or when brakes are applied. This issue can lead to increased difficulty in making safe lane changes, as drivers may unknowingly rely on a non-functional system, posing potential safety risks. Some owners note the problem from the time of purchase, with one report indicating the issue at approximately 300 miles. The inability of dealerships to diagnose or resolve the problem is also commonly mentioned.

SERVICE BRAKES (7 complaints)

SERVICE BRAKES

7 complaints

Owners report two primary issues with the 2021 Ram Promaster's service brakes. First, multiple complaints describe brake calipers seizing, particularly at the rear, with symptoms like wheels not turning and brakes overheating, often after using the parking brake. This issue appears in vehicles with relatively low mileage, around 12,500 miles. Second, a recurring brake system warning light activates during downhill driving, especially on long descents, with owners noting it turns off after restarting the vehicle. This warning light issue is reported to occur consistently during mountain driving, with no resolution offered by dealers. These problems suggest potential safety implications, such as compromised braking performance or reduced driver awareness of actual brake system failures.

POWER TRAIN (7 complaints)

POWER TRAIN

7 complaintsSafety-related

Owners report several power train issues with the 2021 Ram Promaster, primarily involving transmission failures. Complaints frequently mention the vehicle losing power or failing to shift properly, with some vehicles unable to exceed low speeds or losing the ability to reverse. These issues often arise at higher mileages, around 120,000 to 130,000 miles. Safety implications are significant, with one report of a crash where the vehicle lost power and rolled backward, resulting in a collision with a tree. Vibration and droning sound in vehicle while driving

The issues are at an rpm at 1050 at any speed keeping it steady in this exact range. If you go slower it will drop a gear and is fine. If you go above this rpm in this gear it goes away. They changed the transmission valve body and updated software. This didn't fix the problem. What it did do is raise the idle rpm from 500 to 550 and lowered the warmup rpm, which was much higher. I've been on 2 tech rides 1 to show him the issues that he could not duplicate, then he drove and replicated issues. Another issue l brought it in for was the clunking when slowing down to a stop. It seems fixed for now only the clunking issue. Now 1/7/2026 they are telling me that the vehicle is within normal operating conditions. I have less than 7800 miles on a brand new 2023 Ram 1500 mild hybrid. What would correct this problem would be for the transmission computer to drop to a lower gear just above the 1050 rpm to avoid lugging the engine. More than a year

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
