STEERING
11 complaintsOwners report frequent power steering failures in the 2022 Ram Promaster, often linked to water intrusion in the steering connector or wiring harness. Typical symptoms include difficulty turning the steering wheel, aggressive jerking, and multiple warning messages such as "Service Power Steering" and "Service Hill Assist." These issues are commonly noted at mileages ranging from 21,000 to 80,000 miles. Some complaints describe the vehicle becoming difficult to control, particularly at higher speeds or when hitting bumps, posing potential safety risks. Buyers should be aware of the possibility of needing significant repairs like steering rack and wiring harness replacements.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
7 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2022 Ram Promaster frequently report issues related to the electrical system, particularly involving the cooling fan module, which is linked to engine-compartment fires. Two incidents describe vehicles catching fire shortly after being parked, with no warning signs like burning odors or dashboard alerts prior to the event. Additionally, several owners mention problems with key programming and immobilizer modules, with one report indicating a potential software encryption issue. Other complaints include sliding doors triggering as open while driving and persistent battery drain within a few days, despite replacements. These issues often arise in vehicles that are a few years old, and the safety implications, particularly the risk of fire, are significant for prospective buyers to consider.
SERVICE BRAKES
6 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2022 Ram Promaster frequently report issues with the service brakes, including automatic engagement of the electronic parking brake while in motion, complete brake failure, and unavailability of service parts. Complaints often describe brake pedals going to the floor, grinding noises, and vibrations, with some incidents occurring at highway speeds or during routine driving after several hours. Mileage varies, but one report mentions issues starting at less than 8,000 miles, while another notes a failure at 40,000 miles. Safety implications are significant, with at least one crash reported due to brake failure, and multiple owners describe their vehicles as undrivable. The lack of available replacement parts for critical brake components further complicates repairs and maintenance.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL (6 complaints)
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
6 complaintsOwners of the 2022 Ram Promaster frequently report issues with the vehicle's adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition systems. Commonly described symptoms include the vehicle automatically decelerating or braking harshly when it misinterprets speed limit signs, particularly when detecting lower speed limits from off-ramps or service roads. This unexpected braking occurs without driver input and can happen at highway speeds, which multiple owners note could pose a risk of rear-end collisions. Additionally, some owners mention that the speedometer and cruise control units occasionally switch between MPH and km/h upon starting the vehicle, although this issue is not associated with immediate safety risks. These problems are noted to occur repeatedly, often from the time of vehicle purchase, but specific mileage ranges are not consistently mentioned.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE (6 complaints)

Common symptoms include warning lights illuminating and the system failing to restart, often accompanied by error codes related to sensor blinding or camera faults. Complaints frequently describe unexpected braking, sometimes leading to loss of vehicle control, especially at highway speeds, posing significant safety risks. These problems appear to occur at various mileage points, with some issues reported as early as 59 miles and others around 30,000 miles. Buyers should be aware of these potential safety implications and the difficulty some owners face in obtaining effective repairs.
STRUCTURE (5 complaints)
STRUCTURE
5 complaintsOwners of the 2022 Ram Promaster commonly report issues with the vehicle's structure, particularly concerning the sliding side door and windshield cowl. Complaints frequently mention that the sliding side door cannot be manually unlocked from the inside, posing a potential safety risk in emergencies. Additionally, multiple owners describe water intrusion problems where rainwater floods the engine bay due to a failing engine cowl, potentially affecting electrical components and headlights. These issues are noted from the outset of ownership, with no specific mileage range indicated, and are reported to occur in both the Promaster and RV models built on the Promaster chassis. Safety implications are highlighted, including concerns about evacuation delays and electrical failures.

Vibration and droning sound in vehicle while driving
The issues are at an rpm at 1050 at any speed keeping it steady in this exact range. If you go slower it will drop a gear and is fine. If you go above this rpm in this gear it goes away. They changed the transmission valve body and updated software. This didn't fix the problem. What it did do is raise the idle rpm from 500 to 550 and lowered the warmup rpm, which was much higher. I've been on 2 tech rides 1 to show him the issues that he could not duplicate, then he drove and replicated issues. Another issue l brought it in for was the clunking when slowing down to a stop. It seems fixed for now only the clunking issue. Now 1/7/2026 they are telling me that the vehicle is within normal operating conditions. I have less than 7800 miles on a brand new 2023 Ram 1500 mild hybrid. What would correct this problem would be for the transmission computer to drop to a lower gear just above the 1050 rpm to avoid lugging the engine. More than a year

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
Get notified when new recalls or reliability data is added for the Ram Promaster.
