2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Common Problems by Component
29 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
POWER TRAIN
7 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE report several issues with the power train, primarily involving the vehicle unexpectedly shifting into neutral while driving. This issue often requires the driver to pull over and restart the vehicle to regain control, as described by multiple owners. Complaints frequently mention these incidents occurring at various speeds and sometimes after deceleration, with some reports indicating this happens as often as once a week. One report includes a crash where the vehicle went out of control after failing to reverse properly, resulting in significant damage but no injuries. The mileage at which these issues occur varies, with one complaint noting the problem persisting even after a recall repair at approximately 20,000 miles. These patterns suggest potential safety implications, including loss of control and the need for immediate corrective actions by drivers.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
6 complaintsOwners of the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE report several issues, with a notable problem being windshield cracks and the subsequent difficulty in obtaining replacements due to a backlog. Complaints frequently mention long waits for OEM windshields, with some owners experiencing delays of up to four months, which may pose a safety concern. Another reported issue involves sunroof glass shattering unexpectedly, which results in glass shards entering the cabin and poses an immediate safety risk. Additionally, some owners describe a foul odor from the AC vents and problems with sensitive key fobs that inadvertently unlock doors or open the lift gate. These issues generally occur at low mileage, with one report noting the odor issue at under 12,000 miles.
STRUCTURE
4 complaintsOwners of the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE report issues primarily related to structural components, particularly involving the roof and rear hatch. One owner describes a shattered panel on the roof between the front windshield and panoramic roof. Another owner reports multiple instances of the rear hatch opening unexpectedly when the vehicle is unattended, raising potential safety and security concerns. Additionally, multiple owners mention a recall related to structural issues, but they express frustration over the unavailability of parts necessary for the repair. These complaints emerge early in vehicle ownership, with one owner noting issues within the first few miles and another with approximately 2,300 miles on the vehicle.
FUEL SYSTEM (3 complaints)
FUEL SYSTEM
3 complaintsOwners of the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE report issues related to the fuel system, often linked to a specific recall. Common symptoms include the vehicle shutting off unexpectedly, a persistent fuel odor, and unusual engine noises such as loud revving and clicking. These issues are typically noted at mileages ranging from 10,000 to 28,000 miles. Some owners express safety concerns due to the vehicle shutting off while driving, and one incident involved the fire department addressing a fuel odor in a garage. Buyers should be aware of potential delays in recall repairs due to parts availability, which may affect the resolution of these issues.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM (3 complaints)
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
3 complaintsOwners report issues with the electrical system of the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE, primarily involving instrument cluster failures and battery-related warnings. Complaints frequently mention the instrument cluster going black, disabling the speedometer, gas gauge, and safety features like blind spot monitoring for several hours. Additionally, multiple owners describe persistent warnings about low charge in the 12V battery, which can occur daily and lead to potential vehicle access restrictions. Some owners experience breakdowns due to malfunctions in both the 48V and 12V battery systems, resulting in sudden power loss and vehicle immobilization, sometimes with less than 4,000 miles on the odometer. These issues have safety implications, as they can leave drivers stranded or cause loss of vehicle control.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL (2 complaints)
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
2 complaintsOwners of the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE report issues with the vehicle's cruise control system, particularly when driving at highway speeds. Complaints frequently mention the car unexpectedly braking from speeds between 55-70 mph to as low as 15-20 mph without any obstruction ahead. This sudden deceleration occurs even when other vehicles are following closely, posing a risk of rear-end collisions. Additionally, owners describe instances where the vehicle brakes during automatic lane changes, especially on curves, and experiences aggressive lane-keeping actions. These issues have been reported without resolution after service visits, highlighting potential safety concerns for prospective buyers.
SERVICE BRAKES (2 complaints)
SERVICE BRAKES
2 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE report issues with the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system. Complaints frequently mention the system failing to engage or provide any alerts, even in situations where a collision occurs, as seen in one reported crash. Another owner describes the brakes going to the floor without cause, accompanied by the seat belt restraining unexpectedly and the AEB warning light illuminating without an apparent collision threat. These issues are reported at mileage as low as 6,000 miles. The safety implications include a crash and unexpected braking behavior, which could be concerning for potential buyers evaluating the reliability of the vehicle's braking system.
VISIBILITY/WIPER (1 complaints)
VISIBILITY/WIPER
1 complaintWhile driving on the freeway, in a construction zone, at night, in the rain, the windshield wipers of my vehicle stopped working and froze in the upright (vertical) position. Because it was raining, and night time, I pulled to the side of the road and engaged the hazard lights. I attempted to restart the vehicle several times, as well as to turn the wipers on and off several times, to no avail. The dealership the car was taken to was able to confirm that the wipers did not, in fact, work. There was no warning that the wipers would stop working, no lamps came on, and no symptoms indicated that the wipers would fail. The vehicle has since been repaired and, therefore, not available for inspection.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE (1 complaints)
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
1 complaintSafety-relatedOn December 3, 2022, my new 2023 AMG GLE53, with less than 300 miles on the odometer, completely failed to issue a Forward Collision Warning and to activate the Automatic Emergency Braking when approaching at approximately 25 mph a city intersection, causing an accident with a vehicle that was stopped at the traffic light. That misbehavior was very unexpected from a vehicle that is supposed to be equipped with very advanced modern technologies for the safety of passengers and other road users. We were lucky that there was no injury, but that accident caused a lot of damages to both vehicles, exceeding several thousands of dollars, in addition to my disappointment of not seeing any of the advanced safety elements of the vehicle to operate as advertised. I would strongly recommend an investigation initiated by NHTSA, as the issue may not be isolated, and other users may be at risk. Thank you

C300 Turn signal flashes 3 times then goes out dash says check left turn signal
Every time I start the car, the lights are fine and no messages in dash. As soon as I use the left turn signal, it flashes 3 times then goes out. Dash says check left turn signal. The same thing applies to one of the two front parking lights on each headlight unit (left and right) and and the left side indicator. I can drive all day with no problem but as soon as the automatic headlights come on the parking lights and side maker come on briefly then go out and I get messages for each on dash. Replaced both headlight/turn signal units and the exact same issue persists. Turn it off and it starts all over. Maybe unrelated but when I use rear defroster radio gets static; also volume knob in center dash is inconsistant but the volume buttons on the steering wheel work fine. More than a year

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
Get notified when new recalls or reliability data is added for the Mercedes-Benz GLE.
