Consequence
A seat too close to the air bag increases the risk of injury in the event of a crash necessitating the deployment of the frontal passenger air bag.
Remedy
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will recalibrate the passenger seat limiter, free of charge. The recall began April 29, 2021. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2021040002.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2019-2021 CLS 53 4MATIC, 2019-2023 E 53 4MATIC Cabriolet, E 53 4MATIC Coupe, E 53 4MATIC Sedan, 2021-2024 GT 43 4MATIC, and 2019-2025 GT 53 4MATIC vehicles. The transmission wiring harness connection might not have been correctly wired during a prior recall repair, and during production. which can expose the electrical connector to corrosion, and result in an electrical short-circuit.
Consequence
An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the two-part wiring harness and connector, free of charge. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed August 9, 2024. A second notice will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-877-496-3691. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2024100002/3. The 12-Volt battery in the trunk may not be properly secured, which, in the event of a crash, can cause electrical connection failure, disabling various safety features including, emergency call (eCall) system, electric seat adjustment, hazard warning lights, and automatic door locks.
Consequence
The inability to operate safety features (eCall system, hazard lights, electric seats, or automatic door locks) can increase the risk of injury during a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will secure the 12V battery, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 20, 2023. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2022100009.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
13 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA frequently report issues with the electrical system, notably involving rear camera failures and spontaneous fires. Complaints describe rear cameras blacking out during reversing, which has been linked to existing recalls not covering all affected vehicles. Two separate incidents of fires were reported, one occurring at a stoplight and another after using the remote start feature via the Mercedes me app. Additionally, some owners experience sudden deceleration with the vehicle shifting into neutral unexpectedly, posing a potential risk of collision. These issues appear at various mileage points, with some vehicles having less than 15,000 miles. Safety implications are significant, with reports of crashes, fires, and one injury due to a malfunctioning trunk mechanism. Buyers should be aware of these recurring electrical system problems and verify recall completions before purchase.
POWER TRAIN
12 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA frequently report power train issues, with common symptoms including unexpected shifts into neutral and loss of power while driving. These issues often occur at low speeds or when attempting to accelerate from a stop, and some owners note the need to restart the vehicle to regain functionality. Complaints typically arise around 25,000 to 50,000 miles. Safety implications are significant, as one report involves a crash and injury when the vehicle unexpectedly surged forward. Buyers should be aware of potential transmission problems and engine-related failures, such as misfires and oil leaks, which may lead to costly repairs and unsafe driving conditions.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
11 complaintsOwners of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA report several distinct issues. Common complaints include sudden vehicle shutdowns without warning, often accompanied by dimming dashboard lights, and intermittent engine warning messages related to an inoperative oil pump valve, typically occurring at low mileage. Some owners also describe abrupt trunk lid closures and sunroof explosions, both posing potential safety hazards. Additionally, a recurring transmission malfunction causes the vehicle to stall and shift into neutral, leaving drivers stranded in traffic, with reports indicating this issue persists from around 15,000 to 75,000 miles. These problems highlight potential safety risks, including loss of control and exposure to broken glass, which used car buyers should consider.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
Get notified when new recalls or reliability data is added for the Mercedes-Benz CLA.
