2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA Common Problems by Component
23 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
10 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners report several recurring issues with the electrical system of the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA. Complaints frequently mention problems with the infotainment system and instrument clusters, which include screens freezing, going black, or failing to illuminate, often occurring during driving. Multiple owners describe sudden and unexpected vehicle acceleration during low-speed parking maneuvers, leading to crashes, with no warning alerts or system interventions. These incidents are reported to occur at low mileages, often within the first few months of ownership. The safety implications are significant, with reports of crashes and loss of control during these acceleration events, posing risks to both the driver and surrounding traffic.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
7 complaintsOwners report several issues with the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA, primarily related to unexpected vehicle behavior. Complaints frequently mention the car jerking violently at various speeds and conditions, with one owner experiencing back pain and multiple service visits without resolution. Another common issue involves the vehicle shifting unexpectedly from drive to neutral, requiring a restart to regain control. Some owners also describe the car not starting and displaying multiple warnings, which were temporarily addressed by software updates. These problems typically occur within the first 9,100 miles and raise safety concerns due to potential loss of control and distraction, although no crashes or injuries are reported.
STRUCTURE
2 complaintsOwners report issues with the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA's panoramic sunroof shattering unexpectedly while driving. Complaints frequently mention a loud bang or explosion-like sound followed by the sunroof glass breaking, with one incident resulting in an injury due to glass falling into the vehicle. These incidents typically occur while driving on highways, and one owner specifies experiencing the issue within one and a half months of ownership. The sudden shattering of the sunroof poses a significant safety risk, as it can lead to driver distraction and potential accidents. This information is particularly relevant for prospective buyers considering the structural integrity of the vehicle.
SEATS (2 complaints)
SEATS
2 complaintsOwners of the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA report issues with both the driver's and passenger's seats. The driver's seat reportedly moves backward unexpectedly while driving, which has occurred multiple times, including on highways and in parking situations, posing potential safety risks due to the sudden change in seating position. Additionally, the passenger seat is described as bouncing, vibrating, and rattling while the vehicle is in motion. Both issues have been acknowledged by dealership technicians, but owners state that no solutions have been provided, with one report indicating that the passenger seat issue is common across this model year. These concerns are flagged as significant safety issues by the owners.
SERVICE BRAKES (2 complaints)
SERVICE BRAKES
2 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA report issues with the braking system, specifically mentioning a malfunction in the brake-by-wire system that may involve electronic stability control or unintended acceleration. One complaint describes a severe incident where the vehicle accelerated uncontrollably when the brake pedal was fully depressed, resulting in a crash into a cinder block wall. This incident highlights a critical safety risk, particularly the potential for high-speed unintended collisions. The complaint does not specify a particular mileage range, and no warning indicators were reported prior to the event. This information suggests that prospective buyers should be aware of potential braking system malfunctions that could lead to loss of vehicle control.
POWER TRAIN (2 complaints)
POWER TRAIN
2 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners report two distinct power train issues with the 2024 Mercedes-Benz models. One complaint involves a post-airbag deployment Powertrain Control Module (PCM) lockout, which prevents the engine from restarting, potentially leaving drivers stranded in emergencies after a collision. The other issue described is a harsh, abnormal shift between 3rd and 4th gear at approximately 25–35 mph during normal acceleration in the Mercedes-Benz S580, with symptoms including a sudden jerk or hesitation. This transmission issue has been documented by a dealership but persists despite multiple service visits. The transmission problem occurs intermittently and can happen without warning lights, presenting a safety concern during city driving.
SUSPENSION (2 complaints)
SUSPENSION
2 complaintsOwners report issues with the suspension of the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA, particularly involving creaking noises from the rear and severe rusting of the subframe, which is noted as critical by mechanics. Complaints frequently mention that these problems become apparent at around 120,000 miles. Additionally, some owners describe repeated tire blowouts and rapid pressure loss with factory-installed wheels and tires, with incidents occurring multiple times over an 18-month period. Safety implications include potential loss of vehicle control and increased risk of accidents, especially given the described subframe rust and tire failures. Buyers should be aware of these issues, particularly if considering a vehicle with higher mileage.
WHEELS (2 complaints)
WHEELS
2 complaintsOwners report issues with the Pirelli tires on the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA, specifically noting the formation of bubbles on the sidewalls and air leakage. These symptoms frequently lead to flat tires, with one owner experiencing five flat tires within a 40-day period. Complaints highlight that the tires may not adequately support the vehicle's weight, with one incident nearly resulting in a collision due to sudden tire pressure loss. The pattern suggests a potential safety risk, particularly when encountering road hazards such as potholes. Buyers should be aware of these tire-related issues and consider inspecting tire condition and compatibility when evaluating the vehicle.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING (1 complaints)
EXTERIOR LIGHTING
1 complaintThe master central screen as well as the passenger screen that contains all features for radio, navigation, control of reading road signs, climate control and the like go BLACK randomly during the four weeks I have owned the 2024 E Class Mercedes. It will reboot after 2-5 minutes with no lost data. Dealer in Cherry Hill, NJ did major software update not completed at time of purchase. But incident happened after two weeks. Others with this make, year and model have same situations with dealerships not knowing anything. Supposedly, Mercedes knows but a solution may be three months or more. This is a safety issue as if happens at night, you lose all connections even to the cell phone and no speed sign indicator on. You cannot see anything but the driver screen with just the speed you are doing. Cruise control disengages which is using all security systems and navigation map.
STEERING (1 complaints)
STEERING
1 complaintThe contact owns a 2024 Mercedes-Benz E450. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the "Active Emergency Assistance Imperative" message was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who determined that a software update was required. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, who then diagnosed a failure with the power steering control module (PSCM). The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was then taken back to the dealer, who replaced the steering wheel. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 50.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
Get notified when new recalls or reliability data is added for the Mercedes-Benz CLA.
