In addition, information for using this inspection gauge might not be included in the owner's manual. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems."

Consequence

Driving with worn brake pads can reduce braking ability, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Dealers will install an inspection gauge and provide supplemental owner's manual information, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on February 29, 2024. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

6 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz A-Class frequently report issues related to the electrical system, including failures with the rear camera and digital panel. One complaint involves a fire that occurred shortly after using the remote start feature via the Mercedes me app. Another complaint describes a crash linked to the rear camera malfunctioning, which is associated with a recall that some vehicles are reportedly not included in despite experiencing similar issues. Several owners mention delays in obtaining parts for recall repairs, indicating a potential parts distribution issue. POWER TRAIN

3 complaints

Owners of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz A-Class report significant power train issues, including engine seizures and drivetrain rumbling. One owner describes a snapped motor mount leading to engine failure, with subsequent catastrophic engine issues and metal shavings in the oil, occurring after only 3,661 miles since previous repairs. Another complaint highlights rumbling during acceleration and deceleration at highway speeds, linked to drivetrain components also used in other recalled models. A third report involves a coolant error leading to loss of vehicle control at 55 mph, with subsequent electrical system failures traced to a potentially damaged PMC module. These issues raise safety concerns, particularly regarding loss of control and potential engine failure, which may impact the vehicle’s reliability and resale value.

ENGINE

2 complaints

Owners of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz A-Class report issues related to fuel injector leakage and software malfunctions affecting the fuel pressure system. Symptoms frequently include the vehicle entering "limp mode," limiting speed to 9 miles per hour, and triggering the check engine light. One owner describes incurring significant repair costs for fuel injector replacement, while another reports repeated software malfunctions that have required towing and dealership intervention without a permanent fix. These issues have occurred within a few years of ownership and involve safety implications, such as the risk of fire and involuntary loss of vehicle control. Buyers should be aware of these potential problems and the associated safety risks.

2 complaints total
UNKNOWN OR OTHER (2 complaints)

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

2 complaints

Owners of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz A-Class report a recurring transmission malfunction occurring between 15,000 and 75,000 miles. The primary symptom described is the vehicle unexpectedly stalling and shifting into neutral, accompanied by a warning message stating “Cannot reverse – take to dealer.” This issue renders the gas pedal unresponsive and can lead to the vehicle stopping in traffic, posing a potential safety risk due to loss of control. One owner mentions that the vehicle can sometimes be temporarily restored by turning it off and on, but the problem persists and has not been fully repaired. This information is crucial for used car buyers to consider, especially regarding the safety implications of driving at highway speeds.

2 complaints total
STEERING (2 complaints)

STEERING

2 complaints

Owners of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz A-Class report issues related to the steering system, specifically a popping or clicking noise when turning the steering wheel, which is more pronounced when the vehicle is cold. This symptom is associated with rough driving, though no specific mileage range is mentioned. Additionally, owners express concerns about delays in recall repairs related to steering, with parts reportedly unavailable for extended periods. While no crashes or loss of control are reported, the unresolved nature of the recall could be a consideration for potential buyers.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.

Get notified when new recalls or reliability data is added for the Mercedes-Benz A-Class.
