BACK OVER PREVENTION

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022-2026 Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru Solterra vehicles equipped with a Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) system. Please see the recall report for a complete list of models. A software error may cause the rearview camera to freeze or display a blank screen when the vehicle is in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."

Consequence

A rearview camera that fails to display an image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Dealers will update the parking assist software, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed January 2, 2026. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 25TB13 and 25LB06. Subaru's number for this recall is WRE25.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022-2024 Toyota Tundra, Lexus LX, and 2024 Lexus GX vehicles equipped with a V35A engine. Debris from the manufacturing process may contaminate the engine and cause the main bearings to fail, which can result in an engine stall and loss of drive power.

Consequence

A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.

Remedy

The remedy is currently under development. Once the repair is available, repairs will be performed free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed December 16, 2025. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available, anticipated April 2026. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 25TB14 and 25TA14. Lexus' numbers for this recall are 25LB07 and 25LA07. This recall expands previous NHTSA recall number 24V381.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

4 complaints

Owners of the 2024 Lexus GX report issues with the electrical system, particularly involving the instrument cluster and electronic control units. Complaints frequently mention instrument cluster screens turning black while driving, with one report indicating this occurs intermittently and is unresolved by dealerships. Another owner describes a "Low Steering Power" message and subsequent electrical failures, including smoke from the fuse box, suggesting a potential fire risk. Additionally, there is a report of melted dashboard items damaging the ECU and power distribution assembly, leading to complete vehicle inoperability. These issues are reported at mileages ranging from 4,500 to 8,000 miles. Safety implications include potential fire hazards and loss of vehicle operability, which are critical considerations for prospective buyers.

ENGINE

2 complaints

Owners report two main issues with the 2024 Lexus GX engine. One complaint describes a rough idle, while another details a severe engine failure where the timing belt guide breaks, leading to a loss of engine timing and subsequent damage to the valves and head. This failure results in the engine becoming completely disabled, requiring emergency maneuvering to safely exit heavy traffic, and necessitates extensive repairs taking nearly a month to complete. The latter issue poses significant safety risks due to the sudden loss of motive power, though specific mileage information is not provided in the complaints. These reports highlight potential reliability concerns for prospective buyers, particularly regarding unexpected engine shutdowns.

2 complaints total

SERVICE BRAKES

2 complaints

Owners of the 2024 Lexus GX frequently report issues with the service brakes, with two primary patterns emerging. One complaint describes violent shaking during braking on steep grades, even after rotor and pad replacement, occurring around 6,000 miles. Another issue involves brake squealing, particularly when backing up in the mornings, with the manufacturer aware but slow to supply repair kits, affecting approximately two-thirds of vehicles sold. Safety implications include concerns about brake reliability on steep descents, though no crashes or loss of control are reported. These patterns suggest potential maintenance challenges for used car buyers, particularly those driving in mountainous areas.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER (2 complaints)

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

2 complaints

Owners of the 2024 Lexus GX report two primary issues under the unknown or other category. First, multiple owners describe a "transmission jerk" when pressing the brake, particularly noticeable when slowing to a stop. This issue reportedly begins after a few months of ownership and persists despite dealership attempts to reset the system, affecting driving comfort and potentially leading to concerns about vehicle control. Second, there are complaints about the OEM pre-installed slim profile roof rack causing distracting noises at speeds between 45mph and 55mph, which could lead to driver distraction. Both issues are noted by owners to have potential safety implications, with the transmission jerk causing anxiety about possible collisions and the roof rack noise leading to driver distraction.

NEW 2024 GX550, less than 2 months and 3,000 miles of ownership- accelerating to 40 mph and vehicle completely shut off, jolting me forward. All lights on dash lit up, "power steering failure, engine failure, not safe to drive." It was all I could do to get it off to the shoulder of the road. Extremely dangerous. Had vehicle towed to local Lexus dealer. After 2 weeks master tech determined timing chain snapped causing catastrophic engine failure. Now we wait for Lexus corporate to advise them on how to fix. Both dealer and corporate blaming each other for the lack of communication. Vehicle has been sitting in dealer parking lot for 3 weeks with no timeline and no communication. I was told by head service tech this is #5 in the country for this year, make, and model of timing chain snap resulting in engine failure. Neither parties are doing anything to make it right. This is an $85,000 vehicle.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
