2 complaints

Owners of the 2019 Lexus GX report issues with the rear window shattering unexpectedly and problems with the sideview mirrors when reversing. One complaint describes the rear window shattering with a loud noise while driving, which also caused the rear wiper and hydraulic rod to detach. Another owner reports that the sideview mirrors automatically adjust downward when reversing, making it difficult to see clearly without manual adjustment, which they perceive as a safety risk. These issues occur without specific mileage references, but they highlight potential safety concerns related to visibility and unexpected glass breakage.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

2 complaints

Owners of the 2019 Lexus GX report issues with the fuel propulsion system, specifically involving the low-pressure fuel pump. Complaints frequently mention that the vehicle's engine may stop operating while driving, particularly at speeds over 50 mph, which poses a potential safety risk. This issue requires the vehicle to come to a complete stop before it can be restarted. One owner highlights the lack of an available remedy despite a known recall, while another notes repeated occurrences on the highway. These reports suggest that prospective buyers should be aware of potential engine shutdowns and the associated safety implications, especially during high-speed travel.

The contact owns a 2019 Lexus GX460. While the contact’s wife was driving and exiting the driveway at the residence, the driver’s and passenger’s side side-view mirrors became distorted with crinkle-like lines. The contact stated that the lines obstructed driving visibility and the ability to safely operate the vehicle. Upon investigation, the contact discovered that a dimming solution between the glass of the sideview mirrors had caused the failure to occur. The contact linked that failure to a visit to the car wash the day prior to the discovery of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact attempted to contact the manufacturer and the dealer but was unsuccessful. The failure mileage was approximately 19,000.

HELLO, MY CAR IS TILTED TO THE RIGHT WHEN TRAVELING ON HIGHWAY. ALSO TILTED A LOT WHEN I TURN LEFT. THIS IS NOT NORMAL BECAUSE MY OTHER CARS DON'T BEHAVE LIKE THAT. I BROUGHT TO LEXUS DEALER BUT WAS INFORMED THE CAR IS NORMAL. HOWEVER, I NEED NTSB TO CHECK BECAUSE I DON'T FEEL SAFE WITH THIS CAR. NOTE: I THINK THIS IS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT BECAUSE THERE ARE OTHER PEOPLE WHO COMPLAINED ON THE INTERNET ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
