Escape engine complaints by model year

The 2018 model year dominates, with 1,096 engine complaints and the highest rate per 10,000 sold. The 2019 year follows with 268. The 2020 and 2022 years sit well below those, at 97 and 68, but both carry fire reports and open recall repairs. The 2023 through 2026 years show far fewer complaints, from 17 down to none. That mostly reflects less time on the road, so a low count there does not make those years safer. Newer cars still show early stalling, overheating warnings, and fire.

Owner complaints filed with NHTSA under engine, engine and engine cooling. Newer model years have had less time to collect complaints.

What goes wrong

Coolant getting into the cylinders is the main engine complaint. It usually starts with a check engine light and a misfire, often in cylinder 2 or 3. White smoke at startup, rough idle, shaking, low coolant, and overheating warnings follow. New spark plugs and ignition coils rarely cure it, and the light comes back within days. Shops commonly end up calling for a new short block or long block.

The safety side is serious. Some engines lose power or shut down at highway speed, and owners describe near misses in traffic. Federal complaint records show 3 crash reports and 9 fire reports tied to engine problems, spread across the 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022, and 2023 model years. Several fires started under the hood with smoke or a fuel smell first. Many cars end up undrivable. One owner says the car sat unmoving for ten months after a repair quote jumped.

Symptoms owners report

Coolant intrusion and misfires

A check engine light comes on with misfire codes, usually for cylinder 2 or 3. The engine shakes at startup and idles rough. Coolant has to be topped up. Spark plug and coil swaps tend to fail, and the diagnosis turns out to be coolant in the cylinders.

White smoke and overheating

White exhaust smoke at cold start is common. Owners also report a temperature gauge climbing to hot and Engine Overheating or Engine Fault - Coolant messages. Some warnings show up while the gauge reads normal and the coolant is full.

Power loss and stalling

The engine bucks, drops into limp mode, or quits at highway speed. Some cars lose power steering and power braking with it. Newer cars stall pulling away from a stop or while turning, and dealers often find no codes.

Engine compartment fires

Fire reports describe smoke, a fuel smell, or a metallic ticking sound before flames appear under the hood. One 2022 car burned while parked. Another fire started at about 7,400 miles on a 2023. Some owners had no warning light.

Very early failures

Some 2023 and 2024 cars fail within the first few thousand miles. Reports include overheat warnings and limp mode at about 3,900 and 4,200 miles, and random misfire codes P0300 and P0316 within the first 5,000 miles.

Hybrid shutdowns

On hybrids, owners describe a Stop Safely Now warning followed by the engine shutting off. Many 2020 and 2022 filings come from owners waiting on a recall repair because the dealer has no parts.

When the problems start

Owners report coolant-related failures from about 22,000 to 150,000 miles, with many near 100,000. Individual reports include 34,000, 70,000, 73,000, and 91,000 miles. The 2019 reports cluster between about 51,000 and 94,000. Some newer cars fail far sooner, at about 3,900, 4,200, and 7,400 miles.

Repairs and recalls

Dealers usually call for a short block or long block, or a whole new engine. Owners past Ford's extended coverage report paying $7,300 to $9,100, and other quotes run from $5,000 to almost $15,000. Several owners say coverage ended at about 84,000 miles. Federal recall records list six engine recalls. Three cover 2.5L hybrid and plug-in engines. One covers the oil separator housing on 1.5L engines. One covers a cylinder head oil leak on 2023-2025 cars. The 2025 EGR valve recall has no remedy yet.

Checking a used Escape for engine problems

  • Ask for service records showing any coolant top-ups, engine replacement, or cylinder head work. Walk away from a car with no history.
  • Check the coolant level cold, then look for white smoke on a cold start.
  • Start the engine cold and listen for shaking or a rough idle. Confirm the check engine light is off.
  • Scan for stored misfire codes. A recent code reset is a warning sign.
  • Run the VIN through federal recall records and confirm every engine recall repair was completed.
  • Ask a Ford dealer whether any extended coverage still applies at the car's current mileage.

6 engine recalls cover the Ford Escape. A VIN check shows whether the car you're looking at had its recall work done, plus accident and title history.

Ford Escape Engine Problems: common questions

Which Ford Escape years have the most engine problems?
The 2018 model year has by far the most engine complaints, 1,096, followed by 2019 with 268. The 2020 and 2022 years have fewer but include fire reports. Newer years show few complaints mostly because they have had less time on the road.
What is the most common Ford Escape engine problem?
Coolant leaking into the cylinders. Owners see a check engine light, misfires, white smoke, and overheating. Dealers often call for a new short block, long block, or engine. Spark plug and coil replacements rarely fix it.
Is it safe to drive an Escape with engine problems?
Owners report engines losing power or dying at highway speed, plus fires. Federal complaint records show crash and fire reports. A flashing check engine light or an overheating warning means stop driving and have it checked.
Is there a recall for Escape engine problems?
Yes, for some years. Federal recall records list six engine recalls covering 2020 through 2025 models. They address 2.5L hybrid engine failures, 1.5L oil separator cracks, cylinder head oil leaks, and an EGR valve. Check the VIN for your car.
How much does an Escape engine repair cost?
Owners report paying $7,300 to $9,100 after coverage ended. Other quotes run from $5,000 to almost $15,000. One owner paid $7,000 after Ford covered $4,000 of an $11,000 replacement.
