2025 Ford Escape Common Problems by Component
16 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
5 complaintsOwners report several electrical system issues with the 2025 Ford Escape. Complaints frequently mention problems with the vehicle stalling, particularly in intersections, without triggering diagnostic codes or dashboard warnings. Additionally, there are reports of the Forward Collision Avoidance and Lane Departure Assist systems engaging erroneously, as well as independent brake activation while using cruise control. Multiple owners describe warning messages related to the high-voltage battery and powertrain, with some vehicles experiencing extended repair times due to part availability. These issues are noted at varying mileages, from as low as 1,500 miles to around 35,000 miles, and highlight potential safety implications, including unexpected vehicle behavior and prolonged downtime.
POWER TRAIN
3 complaintsOwners of the 2025 Ford Escape frequently report issues with the vehicle's power train, particularly with unexpected gear shifts. Complaints often describe the transmission shifting from Drive to Park or other gears without driver input, sometimes causing the vehicle to shut off. These problems persist despite multiple dealer visits and software updates. Additionally, some owners mention a burning or rotten egg smell at high speeds and hesitation when accelerating from a stop. Safety implications include potential loss of control due to unexpected gear changes, with some reports suggesting vehicle shutdowns. These issues appear to occur despite low mileage, as specific mileage ranges are not provided.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
3 complaintsOwners of the 2025 Ford Escape report issues primarily related to turn signal audibility and door locking mechanisms. Complaints frequently mention that the turn signal volume is too low to hear, affecting driver awareness of signal activation. Additionally, some owners describe a problem with the driver's door locking when keys are left inside the vehicle, while other door locks remain unaffected. These issues are noted without specific mileage or timeline patterns. There are no reported safety implications such as crashes or loss of control associated with these complaints.
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING (2 complaints)
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
2 complaintsOwners of the 2025 Ford Escape report issues related to the engine and engine cooling system, with two main symptoms described. One owner mentions the vehicle stalling at various speeds and while turning, particularly from a complete stop, with no warning lights appearing. Another owner highlights an inability to complete a recall repair due to unavailable parts, though they have not experienced a failure. Both complaints reference a recall, suggesting a potential safety risk, as one owner notes the recall notification warns of possible crashes. The reported issues occur at low mileage, around 5,000 miles, indicating early onset of these problems.
SERVICE BRAKES (1 complaints)
SERVICE BRAKES
1 complaintThe contact owns a 2025 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed and depressing the brake pedal, the engine revved up unexpectedly. Additionally, more effort was needed to depress the brake pedal, causing the braking distance to become extended. The dealer was notified of the failure, but the vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V122000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 5,000.
STEERING (1 complaints)
STEERING
1 complaintTurn Signal is barely audible when turning. If the radio is on, or at higher speeds on the highway, it is impossible to hear the turn signal. Sometimes, you may miss hit the turn signal when changing lanes, and may not actual signal, when you meant to.
ENGINE (1 complaints)
ENGINE
1 complaintCar experienced intermittent check-engine light accompanied by "lugging" and inability to accelerate quickly, especially when driving uphill. I felt this was safety related because highway driving in heavy traffic often calls for the ability to accelerate suddenly to merge or to avoid other cars. Dealer finally diagnosed the problem as caused by all four ignition coils being defective.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
