Consequence
An inoperative rearview camera can reduce the driver's rear visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the coaxial cables, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 18, 2023. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N222378380.

2020 Cadillac XT5 Common Problems by Component
19 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
STEERING
6 complaintsOwners report frequent issues with the power steering system in the 2020 Cadillac XT5, with several complaints describing sudden loss of power steering assist. Typical symptoms include the steering wheel becoming difficult to turn, often requiring significant manual effort, and the issue sometimes resolves temporarily after restarting the vehicle. These problems are noted at various mileage points, with some occurrences reported as early as 2,000 miles. Safety implications are significant, as the loss of steering assist can occur while driving, posing a risk of loss of control. Additionally, some owners mention related electrical malfunctions, such as dashboard lights and wipers behaving erratically, which could complicate driving conditions further.
POWER TRAIN
5 complaintsOwners report several power train issues with the 2020 Cadillac XT5, with transmission problems being a recurring theme. Multiple complaints mention transmission shuddering during acceleration, hard shifting, and slipping, sometimes accompanied by warning messages like "Engine Power is Reduced." These issues often occur around 30,000 to 109,000 miles. Some owners describe incidents where the vehicle fails to maintain speed, requiring them to pull over, which may pose a safety risk. Additionally, there are reports of gear shifter malfunctions, where the gear knob fractures, preventing proper gear selection. These patterns suggest potential reliability concerns for used car buyers considering this model.
ENGINE
2 complaintsOwners report recurring transmission failures and engine stalling in the 2020 Cadillac XT5. Complaints frequently mention the transmission failing multiple times, leading to the vehicle coming to a complete stop while driving, which poses a safety risk, especially on highways. Symptoms include the vehicle driving very slowly and the check engine light illuminating. Engine stalling occurs without warning, with the engine stopping suddenly and requiring several attempts to restart. This issue has been noted to occur in vehicles with mileage under 2,000 miles. Safety implications include potential collisions due to sudden stops and loss of control, as described by owners.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
1 complaintAuto shut down completely in the middle of the road. No one including tow truck driver could not put vehicle into neutral. Once the vehicle was towed to the dealership in was confirmed that battery just died and the dealership stated due to the electrical shifter there was no way to engage neutral since the vehicle could not start. This situation caused major traffic issues for 3 hours as vehicle was locked in position. I would think there should be some way to push the vehicle to the curb allowing traffic to flow. Being stuck in the middle of traffic and unable to push vehicle to the side of the road is very dangerous. Please advise Cadillac that people must have a way to get there vehicle out of the middle of the road and this a very dangerous situation.

The contact stated that the gear shifter plastic and connectors connected to the cover of the wiring had detached from the gear shifter, exposing the inner wiring. 1 complaintThe contact called on behalf of her grandmother who owns a 2020 Cadillac XT5. The contact stated that the vehicle continued to accelerate to approximately 80 MPH. The contact depressed the brake pedal for an excessive amount of time to significantly reduce the speed of the vehicle. The contact stated that the vehicle decelerated to approximately 70 MPH. The contact became aware that the cruise control had activated independently. While attempting to deactivate the cruise control, the cruise control failed to deactivate. The contact pressed the START/STOP button to turn off the vehicle. The contact pressed the button again immediately turning the vehicle back on and shifting into neutral, significantly reducing the RPM. The contact coasted to the side of the road and turned off the vehicle. After waiting for a while the contact turned the vehicle back on and continued driving. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the dealer was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
BACK OVER PREVENTION (1 complaints)
BACK OVER PREVENTION
1 complaintThe camera system has not been turning on intermittenly. Both the rear backup and the side/front cameras bring the screen to a black screen with a red triangle and red camera logo with a line through it (signifying no camera connected?). I have most commonly noticed it when I am parking in my garage at night, but it will work the next day, very hard to reproduce the conditions..

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
Get notified when new recalls or reliability data is added for the Cadillac XT5.
