23V6130002023-09-01

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Audi) is recalling certain 2023 Audi RS E-Tron GT and E-Tron GT vehicles. The high-voltage battery may have an insufficient amount of sealant, which can allow liquid to accumulate in the battery.

Consequence

Liquid accumulation in the high voltage battery can cause electrical arcing, increasing the risk of a fire.

Remedy

Dealers will test the battery for leakage and replace the battery as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 30, 2023. Owners may contact Audi's customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 93T7.

When using the industrial 220V/240V plug at the 100% charge setting, some home power outlets may be incapable of handling the electrical current required to utilize the compact charging system, causing the outlet or charging cable to overheat.

Consequence

An overheated outlet or charging cable can increase the risk of a fire.

Remedy

Owners are advised not to use the 220V/240V compact/portable charging cable and only use the 110V home charging cable or public charging stations. Dealers will supply a new 220V/240V compact/portable charging cable with an incorporated temperature sensor, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 28, 2024. Owners of the 2023 Audi E-Tron GT frequently report issues related to a battery recall that remains unaddressed due to unavailability of necessary parts. Complaints commonly mention an inability to charge the battery beyond 70%, which reduces the vehicle's range and triggers a reduced performance warning light. Several owners highlight extended periods where the vehicle is out of service, with one owner noting the car has been unusable for over four months. The mileage at which these issues occur varies, with one report indicating a failure at approximately 9,826 miles. Safety implications include concerns about potential fire risks due to incomplete recall repairs, though no incidents of fire or crashes are reported. This information may be relevant for used car buyers considering this model, particularly regarding the availability and completion of recall repairs.

My 2023 Audi e-Tron GT has been subject to a recall since September 30, 2024 for possible fire risks associated with its electric batteries, yet Audi still has not announced a solution in the past seven months. Instead, Audi recommends charging the battery to not more than 80% capacity, which significantly limits the vehicle's range. Why has AUdi not been pushed to either fix the problem or compensate owners of affected vehicle, and what is the NHTSA doing about it?

Multiple alerts reported by the car's system for electrical malfunction and steering wheel dysfunction. These alerts keep coming at least 3 times a week. Car has been to the dealership, Audi of Raleigh who has inspected the car 3 times and unable to find the problem. It would seem that the elctric malfunction and steering malfunction would be safety risks to keep driving the car

I had owned my car as the first owner. Within the first year of ownership, I experienced my first suspension failure. It happened when I drove my car during an off day to run some errands, driving locally at daytime with normal speeds. Mind you, here in New York, there’s a lot of street cameras. There aren’t many opportunities to go fast. During normal driving one day, I noticed a loud thump noise, but the car did not go over any potholes or hit anything of the sort which led me to be confused. So I pulled over to a nearby parking lot to see what was going on. I later then saw some error messages about the air suspension. I got out of the car to see that my car was abnormally low to the ground. I also tried to raise the air suspension through the settings, but it wouldn’t work at the moment. I then called Audi to tow the car to the service center located at Audi Queens. They investigated on the matter, said that the front struts were blown out and had to be replaced. They refused to believe that this was anything related to a malfunction and insisted that I hit something. Unfortunately I didn’t have a dash cam, otherwise I would’ve solidified my case. Long story short, I later found out that the 2022 models have had a known issue with the front struts. I’m so lucky that when the time this happened, that nobody or myself got hurt. But this has got to be one of the most frightening thing, to think a car would fail on you suddenly like this!

I have had multiple instances of brake failure while driving this car and it is to a point where I've been directed by my attorney to not drive the vehicle anymore. First instance of possible serious injury or death occurred on 1/15/2024: I brought the vehicle in to Audi of Iowa City because the brakes did not feel reliable. Several days before I brought the vehicle in, I was going 35 MPH and had the pedal all the way to the floor before it would stop. The ABS kicked on to stop the vehicle. This happened on dry pavement. There was no snow, ice, gravel, or other issues with the surface which would cause the car to not stop. Second instance of possible serious injury or death occurred on 2/14/2024: I had the vehicle towed to Audi of Iowa City after experiencing the exact same brake failure issue that day after driving the vehicle less than 100 miles after it was returned to me. Third instance of possible serious injury or death occurred on 5/10/2024: I brought the vehicle in to Audi of Iowa City again after the vehicle failed to stop in a safe manner earlier that day. I was going 30 MPH and the brake pedal went to the floor. I got no response out of the brake pedal. Pre-collision braking stopped the car but there was no resistance in the pedal before that. I have requested Audi replace or repurchase the vehicle three times, each time Audi has declined the buyback and claim the vehicle is safe. There is currently an open, unresolved recall on the brakes for this vehicle AND there is a current national stop sale on all e-tron GT and Porsche Taycan models.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
