2023 KIA Carnival Common Problems by Component
43 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
15 complaintsOwners report several issues with the 2023 KIA Carnival, primarily involving the vehicle's gas door actuator, sliding door sensors, and metal seat railings. Complaints frequently mention the gas door failing to open, which prevents refueling, with some owners experiencing this issue multiple times. Additionally, multiple owners describe the sliding doors not reversing upon encountering resistance, posing a risk of injury, particularly to children. The metal rails where seats connect are reported to become extremely hot, with one owner noting a child suffered a blister. These issues appear across various mileage ranges and usage timelines, with some vehicles being relatively new. Safety implications include potential injury from the sliding doors and hot rails, and concerns about fuel leaks and persistent odors in some cases.
STRUCTURE
10 complaintsOwners of the 2023 KIA Carnival frequently report issues with the power sliding doors, particularly their failure to reverse when encountering an obstruction. Complaints highlight that the doors apply excessive force before reversing, posing a risk of injury, especially to children. Instances of fingers and hands getting caught in the doors are common, with four injuries noted. Some owners also mention problems with the gas door not opening, while one describes a window shattering unexpectedly. These issues typically appear early in the vehicle's use, with some owners experiencing them within a few months. Safety concerns are significant, with the potential for injury due to the door's malfunctioning safety sensors.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
6 complaintsOwners report several issues with the electrical system of the 2023 Kia Carnival, primarily involving the sliding doors and vehicle power. Complaints frequently mention the automatic sliding doors failing to retract upon encountering resistance, leading to potential injury, as well as doors reopening unexpectedly after being closed. Additionally, some owners describe the vehicle losing power while driving, with associated failures in brakes and power steering, often accompanied by warning lights and alarms. These issues are reported at various mileage points, with some occurring shortly after purchase. Safety implications include potential injury from door malfunctions and loss of vehicle control due to power failures.
SEAT BELTS (2 complaints)
SEAT BELTS
2 complaintsOwners report issues with the seat belts in the 2023 Kia Carnival, specifically in the rear middle and second-row seats. Complaints frequently mention seat belts failing to retract or pretensioners not working, which prevents the belts from latching properly during sudden braking. One owner describes their child being unsecured as a result. The issues are noted at approximately 30,000 miles, with parts on backorder and no immediate resolution from dealerships or the manufacturer. These malfunctions have potential safety implications, as the seat belts may not secure passengers effectively in the event of a sudden stop.
ENGINE (2 complaints)
ENGINE
2 complaintsOwners report two main issues with the 2023 KIA Carnival's engine. The first involves a persistent strong fuel smell, with one owner noting that a dealership attempted to address it by replacing fuel injection parts after identifying a leak, but the issue persists. The second issue described involves an engine warning where, after driving for an hour and idling for 30 minutes with a low fuel level, the vehicle prompted the driver to restart the engine. No specific mileage ranges are mentioned, and there are no reports of crashes, fires, or loss of control linked to these issues. These complaints suggest potential concerns with the fuel system and engine management, which prospective buyers might want to investigate further.
Chest Clip (2 complaints)
Chest Clip
2 complaintsOwners of the 2023 KIA Carnival report issues with the chest clip of car seats, specifically mentioning the clip breaking apart unexpectedly. In one case, the chest clip's components were found in a child's mouth, posing a potential choking hazard. Another complaint describes the harness failing to maintain a secure fit, despite attempts to clean the harness adjuster as advised by the manufacturer. These issues have been experienced frequently, with one owner estimating the problem occurring during hundreds of uses. Safety implications include the risk of the chest clip failing to secure a child properly, though no crashes or injuries are reported in the complaints.
STEERING (2 complaints)
STEERING
2 complaintsOwners of the 2023 Kia Carnival report issues with fluid leaks from the steering column, with one case describing an unknown fluid leaking while driving, and another noting oil leaking onto the floorboard near the brake pedal. Both complaints indicate that these leaks are linked to a faulty seal in the steering column, which could potentially lead to the steering wheel seizing and the deactivation of Lane Keep Assist and Steering Assist features. The reported issues occur at mileage as low as 3,337 and around 10,000 miles. Safety implications are suggested by the potential for steering wheel seizure, but no crashes or injuries are reported. Buyers considering a used 2023 Kia Carnival should be aware of these potential steering column issues and the possibility of delayed repairs due to parts being on backorder.

Look Up a VIN →How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
