2024 Volkswagen Jetta Common Problems by Component
26 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
SERVICE BRAKES
7 complaintsOwners of the 2024 Volkswagen Jetta frequently report premature rear brake wear, often requiring replacement of brake pads and rotors at relatively low mileages, such as around 10,000 to 15,000 miles. Complaints commonly mention loud noises from the brakes, particularly when coming to a stop from highway speeds, and some owners express concerns about the financial burden of replacing brake components on a new vehicle. Additionally, multiple reports highlight issues with the Hill Start Assist feature, describing it as overly aggressive and potentially causing stalling on inclines, which may pose a safety risk. There are no reports of crashes or fires, but the premature brake wear and Hill Start Assist issues are notable for potential buyers, especially if considering vehicles with similar mileage.
ENGINE
5 complaintsOwners of the 2024 Volkswagen Jetta frequently report issues with engine misfires, particularly on cold starts. Complaints consistently mention check engine lights for cylinder misfires, often involving cylinders 1 and 4, and occurring as early as 300 to 800 miles. Dealers often attribute the problem to bad fuel or faulty spark plugs, but these solutions do not consistently resolve the issue, with misfires recurring shortly after service. No reports indicate safety implications such as crashes or loss of control, but the persistent nature of the issue and inability to pinpoint a lasting fix may be a consideration for potential buyers.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
4 complaintsOwners of the 2024 Volkswagen Jetta report issues primarily with the vehicle's glass components. Multiple complaints describe the sunroof glass shattering unexpectedly, sometimes while the vehicle is parked, resulting in a loud popping sound and shattered glass either bulging upward or leaving an open section. Another reported issue involves the smaller detached windshield cracking under temperature changes, particularly when transitioning from extreme heat to air-conditioned environments. Additionally, some owners mention problems with the key pins on the VW flip keys falling out, potentially leaving drivers stranded. These issues do not appear to be linked to specific mileage ranges but are noted as safety concerns due to the potential for injury from shattered glass or being stranded due to key failure.
POWER TRAIN (2 complaints)
POWER TRAIN
2 complaintsOwners report issues with the 2024 Volkswagen Jetta's power train, particularly involving the hill assist system and manual transmission. Complaints frequently mention the hill assist engaging unexpectedly and not disengaging properly, even on descents, which leads to transmission slippage and premature rear brake wear. One owner specifically notes these issues beginning at approximately 17,600 miles. While no crashes or fires are reported, the unintended engagement of the hill assist system and manual transmission problems could potentially impact vehicle control. These issues are relevant for buyers considering a used Jetta, especially those with similar mileage.
AIR BAGS (1 complaints)
AIR BAGS
1 complaintSafety-relatedDriving on interstate 74 west bound entered rain storm. Did not see car that was slow or stopped until impact. Traveling at a speed of 78 mph. Airbag did not deploy. Is this normal? Rear ended car in front. Volkswagen was totaled with severe front end damage. Other car was a bigger suv. There is dash cam footage that shows impact.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM (1 complaints)
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
1 complaintCheck engine light came on after attempting a remote start and failed. Upon using an OBD-II code reader, it gave the code: P2421 - EVAP Vent Valve stuck open. This part is not covered under the 8/80k federal emissions warranty but is still an issue and is affecting emissions. There were no other alerts or warnings issued before attempting the remote start that caused the issue.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM (1 complaints)
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
1 complaintThe vehicle’s SOS/emergency call system has been inoperative since the vehicle was purchased. At delivery, the emergency call function did not work and displayed error messages. The vehicle was taken to an authorized Volkswagen dealer, and the OCU (online connectivity unit) module responsible for the SOS system was replaced under warranty on 3/17/2025 at approximately 6,294 miles. After the repair, the system functioned temporarily. In December 2025, the SOS system failed again and now displays an “Emergency Call Function Not Available / Please Service Vehicle” warning. The dealer has confirmed the same OCU module has failed again and must be replaced a second time. When the system is inoperative, the vehicle cannot automatically contact emergency services after a collision. This is a safety concern because the emergency call system is intended to function at all times in the event of a crash.
VISIBILITY/WIPER (1 complaints)
VISIBILITY/WIPER
1 complaintFront Windshield wipers randomly go on causing a distraction almost resulting in a accident. The vehicle was taken in for this problem to Colonial VW located at 200 W Street RD, Feasterville PA 19053. Service rep stated he knows of the issue but there is currently no fix for it. This problem first stared approximately 1 month ago. No warning lights or alerts are present on the vehicle. Issue seems to happen more in bright sunlight but can happen at anytime with multiple wipes at once. The issue will go away for a few mins to a day then reappear out of no where sometimes coming and going the whole trip A google search reveals this maybe a a more common problem than just my vehicle.
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING (1 complaints)
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
1 complaintThe contact owns a 2024 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that at start-up, there was an abnormal amount of white smoke coming from the exhaust pipes. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed, and the contact was informed that a cause for the failure was not found. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 18,078.
TIRES (1 complaints)
TIRES
1 complaintThe tire went flat as I was driving and when I had to change the tire I noticed that the tire had blown out on the sidewall on the inside of the rim of the car. The car only has 12,000 miles and I had a tire rotation done on my first oil change. I called the dealership to see if the tire was covered under warranty since I brought the car new for Steve White VW of Greenville, SC. They told me since I didn’t buy a warranty with the purchase of the car then it was nothing they could do about it. I brought a car thinking that the tires should be good until they wear out not blow out. Also I have TPMS light on as well as the check engine light is on in the vehicle. 205/55R17

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
