3 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2023 Mazda CX-30 report issues related to braking and HVAC system failures. One complaint involves a brake failure leading to a crash with an injury, where the vehicle surged forward despite the driver applying the brakes, accompanied by errors in the activsense driver assist system. Another complaint describes an HVAC defect where white chemical particulates are released into the cabin due to a failed "evaporative coating," with the vehicle being out of service for over three months and subsequent repair using damaged parts. Additionally, a fuel gauge issue is noted, with reports of non-linear and inaccurate readings leading to unexpected fuel depletion. These issues suggest potential safety risks such as loss of braking control and exposure to chemical emissions.

SERVICE BRAKES

3 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2023 Mazda CX-30 report issues related to brake failures and unintended braking. Two complaints involve crashes where brakes reportedly failed to hold the vehicle at a stop, despite being fully pressed, and brake assist systems did not activate. These incidents are linked by owners to a known brake pedal travel recall, although some vehicles involved are not included in the recall. Another complaint describes the car's emergency braking system activating without obstacles, causing the vehicle to stop abruptly on the highway, a phenomenon known as "phantom braking." These issues typically occur within the first year of ownership, presenting significant safety implications such as crashes and unexpected vehicle stops.

3 complaints total2 crashes

SUSPENSION

2 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2023 Mazda CX-30 report issues related to the suspension, with symptoms including front-end noise and problems with the wheel bearing and rear differential. These issues are noted at low mileages, specifically around 4,000 to 6,000 miles. One owner describes a persistent noise from the front driver side wheel bearing, which persists even after replacement, and another reports a crash incident involving sudden unintended acceleration while maneuvering at low speed. This crash is associated with the ActiveSense system malfunctioning, which may pose safety risks. These patterns provide potential buyers with insight into early suspension-related concerns and safety implications.

2 complaints total1 crash
VISIBILITY/WIPER (2 complaints)

VISIBILITY/WIPER

2 complaints

Owners of the 2023 Mazda CX-30 report issues related to the vehicle's visibility and wiper components. One common problem involves the driver's side windshield wiper failing to clear rainwater effectively, with this issue recurring even after multiple repairs, typically around 30,000 miles. Another frequent complaint involves a distorted, wavy appearance on the windshield, described as having an "orange peel" effect, which can cause dizziness and vision distortion after prolonged driving. This issue persists even after windshield replacement, and some owners report experiencing similar problems with multiple windshields. While no crashes or direct safety incidents are mentioned, the visibility issues could potentially affect driving comfort and safety, especially during adverse weather conditions.

2 complaints total
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL (2 complaints)

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

2 complaints

Owners of the 2023 Mazda CX-30 report issues with unintended acceleration during low-speed maneuvers. Complaints frequently mention that when attempting to brake, the vehicle instead accelerates as if the gas pedal is being pressed, despite the driver's foot being on the brake. These incidents occur in various situations, such as coasting through a parking lot or when transitioning from a parked position, and can result in difficulty controlling the vehicle. Safety implications are noted, with one report detailing a near collision with a gate and another describing a delayed braking response on the freeway. Mileage information is not specified, but the described issues suggest a potential concern for buyers considering this model.

2 complaints total
AIR BAGS (2 complaints)

AIR BAGS

2 complaints

Owners of the 2023 Mazda CX-30 report unexpected deployment of side curtain airbags while driving at low speeds in slushy conditions, without any collision, impact, or rollover. Symptoms include airbag deployment without prior warning lights or messages, resulting in significant vehicle damage. These incidents occur around 20 mph and lead to concerns over potential safety risks, such as startling the driver and causing a crash. Owners also note a lack of transparency from the manufacturer regarding the cause, as Event Data Recorder (EDR) information is not being shared. This pattern may be important for used car buyers to consider, particularly regarding airbag functionality and manufacturer communication.

STEERING (1 complaints)

STEERING

1 complaintSafety-related
2026-02-01Crash reported

While attempting a left-hand turn, the steering wheel suddenly became stiff and unresponsive, as if the mechanical gear had bound. This sudden resistance made it impossible to complete the turn, causing the vehicle to strike a curb at low speed. A post-accident inspection at Lee Johnson Mazda (RO# 649854) confirmed extensive damage, including a bent inner tie rod, a damaged front wheel bearing/hub assembly, and wheel/tire damage totaling over $6,500. The dealership stated no electronic fault codes were present in the computer, but the physical behavior matches the 'sticky steering' symptoms currently under federal investigation for other Mazda models (Recall 24V022 / RQ26002). I believe a mechanical failure in the steering gear caused the collision.

Have not observed light turning itself off without shutting down the vehicle.

Others are at risk and below details how my safety was compromised. Powerlift gate/ trunk closed on my head and did not stop. It knocked me onto the ground and opened up a bloody gash on my head. Went to emergency room in the hospital to have them treat me with my head injury as I was bleeding with a head wound laceration. They sealed the wound with glue as it was in my hairline and gave aspirin for the head pain. There should be a safety feature on the power liftgate that alerts it if person or object is in the way. Other brands of vehicles have this safety feature. It is liability and there is concern for others of this happening that could potentially result in death. My injury has not fully healed as I know have recurring headaches and there will be a large scar left on my head. The vehicle is available for inspection.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
