2022 Mazda CX-30 Common Problems by Component
28 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
ENGINE
6 complaintsOwners of the 2022 Mazda CX-30 frequently report an issue with excessive engine oil consumption. Complaints consistently mention the "low oil" or "low oil pressure" warning light activating between 3,000 to 5,000 miles after an oil change, often requiring the addition of approximately one quart of oil to rectify the low levels. This pattern occurs despite the absence of visible oil leaks and is noted in vehicles with as few as 6,000 miles. There are no reports of crashes, fires, or loss of vehicle control associated with this issue. Prospective buyers should be aware of this recurring oil consumption problem, as it may require more frequent monitoring and maintenance than typical for this vehicle class.
STEERING
4 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2022 Mazda CX-30 report issues related to steering, including sudden and uncontrollable shifts of the steering wheel, sometimes accompanied by unexpected acceleration, which have resulted in crashes. One report notes a crash with an injury when the vehicle veered to the right without warning at approximately 3,000 miles. Another owner describes the lane assist function nearly causing a collision with a guard rail. Additionally, premature wear on the steering wheel is noted, with some attributing it to material quality, although no specific mileage range is consistently mentioned for this issue. These complaints highlight potential safety implications, particularly regarding loss of control and crashes.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
4 complaintsOwners of the 2022 Mazda CX-30 report several issues under the unknown or other category. A common problem includes temperature sensor malfunctions, where the engine consistently reads as cold, potentially impacting vehicle performance. Another issue involves unexpected low oil level warnings appearing 1,000 miles before the scheduled oil change. Some owners describe incidents of the sunroof unexpectedly shattering, with no apparent external cause, raising potential safety concerns. Additionally, complaints about wavy windshields are noted, with affected drivers experiencing visibility issues and headaches. These issues arise in vehicles under two years old, with no specific mileage consistently mentioned across complaints.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM (3 complaints)
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
3 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners report several electrical system issues with the 2022 Mazda CX-30. A significant complaint involves the failure of the automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning systems, which did not activate during a collision, resulting in a crash. This issue is linked to multiple error messages and hard fault codes related to the vehicle's safety systems. Another owner describes ongoing problems with the vehicle's CMU, affecting navigation and backup camera functionality. Additionally, one owner reports a battery failure at 19,742 miles and an issue with the vehicle's transmission not advancing beyond third gear while driving in mountainous areas, alongside temporary deactivation of the safety system. These issues suggest potential safety implications, especially concerning the failure of safety systems during critical moments.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE (2 complaints)
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
2 complaintsOwners report issues with the forward collision avoidance systems in the 2022 Mazda CX-30, particularly involving unexpected braking. One owner describes the "smart braking system" activating without vehicles ahead, leading to an abrupt stop while exiting a freeway. Another owner details problems with the adaptive cruise control failing to properly recognize lane separations and turn lanes, causing the vehicle to brake unnecessarily for vehicles not in its lane. This issue is noted primarily on city streets where the system reactivates upon each start, despite attempts to disable it. These complaints highlight potential safety implications, such as increased risk of rear-end collisions due to sudden deceleration.
AIR BAGS (2 complaints)
AIR BAGS
2 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2022 Mazda CX-30 report issues with the air bags not deploying during a crash and warning lights indicating air bag and seat belt malfunctions. In one instance, an air bag failed to deploy in a collision at approximately 35 MPH, resulting in injuries to the driver. Another owner mentions receiving a dashboard warning about seat belts and air bags being non-operational, despite the vehicle having fewer than 3,000 miles and no prior damage. These complaints suggest potential safety implications, particularly concerning air bag functionality in crash scenarios. Buyers should be aware of these reported issues, especially when considering vehicles with mileage around 23,000 or lower.
SEAT BELTS (1 complaints)
SEAT BELTS
1 complaintPassenger seat belt was stuck retracted and had to be replaced. Coolant temperature control valve failed and car ran cold. They have many cars with this issue but no recall was issued
WHEELS (1 complaints)
WHEELS
1 complaintRear wheel bearings failed at approximately 30,000 miles and were replaced by Mazda under warrantee. The same rear wheel bearings failed at approximately 72,000 miles and are available for inspection. Dealer has confirmed bad wheel bearings on both occasions. The potential for wheel bearing failure incudes loss of control of the vehicle while in motion. Dealer has bearing available for inspection. The only warning is increasing noise as the bearing wear.
SERVICE BRAKES (1 complaints)
SERVICE BRAKES
1 complaintThere is a recall that doesn't include my car. In March before my service due date I got several critical notices on the dash) I-Activsense System malfunction, IActivsense advanced safey and driver support system not operating correctly, Have vehicle inspected. 2) Braking System Malfunction, Stop the vehicle in a safe place, 3)Safety and Driver Support Systems Partially Disabled 4) Vehicle Satus Monitor Serious Malfunction (1) Brake System Malfunction, Vehicle Warning Messages 1..IActivsense System Malfunction next service, which was in 4k miles. This with 19,700 miles on the car (bought with less then 5k on it). I pulled off the road and ate and got back in and all lights gone however 3/7, 3/18, 3/21, 3/22 it all came on again but was gone on arrival to dealership. I had brake fluid checked and it was almost empty, unusual and I know if it leaks and gets wet it corrodes discs, and that is the recall and that is what happened. So far no satisfaction from Mazda other than me paying to have it fixed including a complete brake system flush which should NOT be due till about 50k. I know CX 30 was recalled for this issue, they missed mine. Last service invoice In August says brakes are good, all fluids topped off, yet brake fluid was almost empty and corrision is not even front to rear, salt air is the same on both sides of my car. And why and where is the fluid? I had a third party check it before going in for service (he didn't touch because I'm under warranty but is experienced person in business) .. I will upload Aug and April service invoices. iNVOICE AT 15,374 miles states brakes are good and all fluids topped off, SO in 7 months brakes are destroyed fluid is empty at 19,687 miles. What happened if it wasn't recall problem? Warranty? I believe it should have been in recall.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING (1 complaints)
EXTERIOR LIGHTING
1 complaintThe driver side front headlight bearing has failed. Noticed after 43K miles driven. This is a known failure due to a manufacturing defect (see technical bulletin issued by Mazda) however they won't cover the repair (~$1700) beyond 36,000 miles or 36 months. This is a manufacturer known safety issue which could impair visibility while driving at night and could result in a very dangerous situation. The only "warning" is a temporary fan noise after the vehicle shuts down. As a known manufacturing defect for the manufacturing years referenced in Mazda's technical bulletin, Mazda should cover replacement of the headlamp unit (the bearing is unable to be replaced in isolation) for at least through the life of the powertrain.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
