Several complaints describe this occurring without warning lights or fault codes, with some incidents resulting in crashes. Another common issue involves the sunroof shattering without external impact, described as a loud explosion, which can cause driver distraction. Additionally, owners report electrical problems such as the vehicle not starting or electronic systems failing after software updates, often leaving them stranded. These issues are noted at various mileage ranges and can pose significant safety risks, including loss of vehicle control and potential accidents.
SERVICE BRAKES (7 complaints)
SERVICE BRAKES
7 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners report multiple issues with the service brakes in the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Commonly noted symptoms include ABS and brake warning lights, unexpected activation of the automatic parking brake, and complete brake pedal failure. Some complaints indicate the Forward Collision Warning (FCW) system activating unexpectedly, causing sudden braking. These issues occur at various mileages, with some vehicles experiencing problems under 1,800 miles. Safety implications are significant, with two reports involving crashes due to brake failures or unintentional acceleration, highlighting potential risks for loss of control.

7 complaintsOwners report issues with the Forward Collision Avoidance system in the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee, primarily involving the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system failing to engage as expected. Complaints frequently mention the system not activating when approaching obstacles, with some owners experiencing abrupt and erroneous braking. Typical symptoms include warning messages such as "AEB Failure - Service Required" and "AEB Limited Functionality," often appearing at low mileages, ranging from 11 to 3,169 miles. Safety implications include near-collisions and unexpected stopping, with some owners noting that dealership diagnostics do not identify faults, leaving the issues unresolved. This pattern of reported failures and diagnostic challenges is pertinent for potential buyers considering the vehicle's safety features.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
