Palisade brake complaints by model year
Model year 2024 has the most complaints by a wide margin, with 183 and the highest rate per vehicle sold. The 2025 year has 70 complaints and 2023 has 64, and both show the same low-speed ABS pattern. Model years 2020, 2021 and 2022 have only a handful each. The 2026 year has a single complaint, but it is too new to judge, and 2025 has also had limited time on the road. Federal recall records list one brake recall each for 2021 and 2023.

Owner complaints filed with NHTSA under service brakes, parking brake. Newer model years have had less time to collect complaints.
What goes wrong
The most common complaint is anti-lock brakes activating at low speed on uneven ground. Owners cross a speed bump, rail crossing, pothole or patch of gravel. The pedal pulses, the front end and steering wheel shake, and the SUV keeps rolling instead of stopping. Most reports describe speeds under 30 mph, and no warning light comes on. Dealers often cannot reproduce it.
The safety risk is real. Many of these complaints describe crashes, mostly low-speed rear-end impacts with the vehicle ahead, and a few mention injuries. One 2020 owner described the SUV lurching into a tree after the brakes did not respond over a drainage ditch. Owners also say the stopping distance grows sharply with no warning. The data lists no fires.
Symptoms owners report
ABS fires over bumps
Braking over speed bumps, rail crossings, potholes, manhole covers or gravel sets off the ABS. The pedal pulses or grinds and the front end shakes. Owners report it at low speeds, often under 25 mph.
Car keeps rolling past stops
After the ABS kicks in, stopping distance grows sharply. Owners describe sliding past stop signs, into intersections or into the vehicle ahead, even with the pedal pressed to the floor.
No warning light, no dealer fault
Owners say no warning light comes on during the event. Many dealers could not reproduce it and found nothing wrong. A few owners report one dealer did reproduce it after visits to several.
Sudden or unwanted braking
A smaller group reports the SUV braking hard on its own, creeping forward while stopped, or applying sharp brakes from a false collision warning, including one 2021 owner at highway speed.
Stiff pedal with radar warning
One 2023 owner in stop-and-go traffic found the pedal abnormally stiff. The dash showed "Critical Forward Safety functions are limited" and "Radar blocked," and the SUV hit another vehicle.
Dry caliper brackets
One 2024 owner says a dealer inspection found dry front and rear caliper brackets. The sheet warned the caliper would fail if not replaced. This appears in a single report, not a pattern.
When the problems start
Many owners notice the ABS problem early. One 2025 owner reported it at 360 miles and others at 1,700 miles, and several 2025 reports involve under 5,000 miles. A 2024 owner saw it at just over 3,000 miles. A 2023 owner noticed it at 23,000 miles. The caliper bracket finding came at about 33,540 miles on a 2024.
Repairs and recalls
Owners report mixed results. Dealers often find nothing wrong, and some owners were referred to the manufacturer. Some had ABS parts swapped, including one owner whose dealer replaced the ABS governor without reproducing the fault. Another owner said it was repaired twice in three months. Some had warped rotors machined under a service bulletin. Two federal recalls exist. Recall 21V840000 covers certain 2021 models with contaminated brake fluid, and the fix is a new master cylinder plus a fluid flush. Recall 23V415000 covers certain 2023 models with a booster diaphragm that can misalign, and dealers inspect and replace the booster as necessary. Both are free. The data gives no repair cost specific to brakes.
| Model years | Campaign | Problem |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 23V415000 | Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2023 Palisade vehicles. The brake booster diaphragm may become misaligned and cause an internal vacuum leak, which can result in a loss of power brake assist. |
| 2021 | 21V840000 | Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2021 Palisade vehicles. The brake fluid may be contaminated, which can cause the brake master cylinder inner-cup seals to swell, and reduce braking performance. |
Checking a used Palisade for brake problems
- Drive slowly over a speed bump, rail crossing or rough pavement while braking lightly. Note any pedal pulsing, grinding or shaking.
- Test brakes at under 25 mph on gravel or a pothole-prone street, and confirm the car slows normally.
- Ask the seller if the ABS ever activated over bumps, and whether a dealer visit found or fixed anything.
- Check the VIN with Hyundai or NHTSA for open recalls, especially on 2021 and 2023 models.
- Ask for service records showing brake repairs, ABS part swaps or rotor work, and inspect the caliper brackets.
- Press the pedal in stop-and-go driving and watch for stiffness, false braking or collision warning messages.
2 brake recalls cover the Hyundai Palisade. A VIN check shows whether the car you're looking at had its recall work done, plus accident and title history.
Hyundai Palisade Brake Problems: common questions
- Which Hyundai Palisade years have the most brake complaints?
- The 2024 model year has the most, with 183 complaints and the highest rate per vehicle sold. The 2025 and 2023 years follow with 70 and 64. The 2020 to 2022 years have only a few. The 2026 year is too new to judge.
- What is the main Palisade brake problem?
- Owners describe the ABS activating at low speed over bumps, rail crossings, potholes or gravel. The pedal shakes or grinds and the SUV keeps rolling instead of stopping. No warning light usually appears, and dealers often cannot reproduce it.
- Is it safe to drive a Palisade with this brake problem?
- Owners report crashes, mostly low-speed rear-end impacts, and a few injuries. Stopping distance can grow sharply on uneven ground. Anyone who has felt the problem should report it to a dealer in writing and leave extra room when braking.
- Does a recall cover the Palisade ABS problem?
- Federal recall records list two brake recalls. One covers certain 2021 models for contaminated brake fluid and the master cylinder. The other covers certain 2023 models for a brake booster diaphragm. Neither recall text mentions low-speed ABS activation over bumps.
- How much does a Palisade brake fix cost?
- The data has no brake-specific price. The two recall repairs are free at dealers. Independent repair-cost data puts the model's overall annual repair cost at $573, which covers all systems. Owners report ABS part swaps, but give no costs.
