AIR BAGS

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 vehicles. Hard braking or acceleration may cause the sensing diagnostic module (SDM) to enter a fault state. As a result, the SDM will not provide crash sensing or deploy the necessary air bags in the event of a crash.

Consequence

In the event of a crash, if the air bags do not deploy as designed, the occupants have an increased risk of injury.

Remedy

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the SDM with updated software, free of charge. The recall began on June 29, 2018. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 18195.

WHEELS

121 complaints

Owners of the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette frequently report issues with cracked and bent wheels, often leading to air leaks and tire deflation. Complaints commonly describe symptoms such as persistent low tire pressure warnings and visible cracks upon inspection. These problems often occur under normal driving conditions, with reports emerging as early as 3,000 miles and as late as 34,000 miles. Safety implications are noted, as driving on cracked or bent wheels can pose a risk of failure at high speeds, though no crashes or injuries are reported in the complaints. Prospective buyers should be aware of these wheel issues and consider the potential need for wheel inspection or replacement.

121 complaints total

POWER TRAIN

10 complaints

Owners of the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette frequently report issues with the transmission, specifically related to the torque converter causing a shudder or vibration during acceleration and driving at speeds between 25-80 mph. Complaints often mention the need for a transmission fluid flush to resolve the issue, with some owners citing service bulletins that address the problem. The shuddering typically begins at low mileages, with reports as early as 3,400 miles, and can lead to concerns about vehicle control and stability. While no crashes or fires are reported, owners express safety concerns due to the unpredictable behavior of the vehicle. Potential buyers should be aware of these transmission issues and the associated repair costs.

10 complaints total

ENGINE

4 complaints

Owners of the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette report significant engine issues, with multiple complaints about engine failure and the need for replacement. Common symptoms include engine misfiring, knock codes, and smoke from the engine compartment, often linked to failures in the high-pressure fuel pump and resulting damage to spark plugs. These issues are typically reported around 35,000 miles, with some owners experiencing prolonged wait times for replacement engines due to backorder issues. No crashes or fires are reported, but the financial and operational impact on owners is significant, as they face rental car costs and ongoing vehicle payments. Buyers should be aware of potential difficulties in obtaining replacement parts, particularly the 6.2-liter V8 engine, which is no longer in production for this model year.

4 complaints total
STEERING (3 complaints)

STEERING

3 complaints

Owners of the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette report several steering-related issues. Multiple complaints describe a loss of power steering assist at low mileages, with incidents occurring as early as 198 miles and repeating at various mileages up to 314 miles. This issue temporarily resolves after restarting the vehicle, but it poses a risk of loss of control, particularly when changing lanes or navigating curves. Additionally, some owners experience a bumping or grinding noise when turning slowly, which is attributed to the "Ackermann effect" by dealers, although owners note the noise persists and worsens over time. A separate issue involves the front splitter becoming loose due to an improperly installed center support bracket, which affects vehicle control and safety. These problems suggest potential safety implications, particularly regarding control and handling at low mileages.

3 complaints total
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM (2 complaints)

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

2 complaints

Owners report issues with the fuel system of the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette, specifically involving the fuel filler neck not sealing properly and fuel leaks. Complaints frequently mention a noticeable smell of gasoline and visible fuel leakage, particularly when the vehicle is parked. One owner notes that these issues occurred just beyond the expiration of the standard 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty, although GM covered a significant portion of the repair costs. These symptoms suggest potential safety risks due to fuel leakage, which could lead to fire hazards. Buyers considering a used model should be aware of these issues and verify if repairs or warranty extensions have been applied.

Vehicle : 2019 Grand Sport Corvette Here’s what happened On or about Oct 14, 2021 I was driving on a multi-lane highway in an 50 mph zone, when the following occurred: -brakes suddenly slammed full-on, then immediately released …e.g., on/off in 0.25 of a second -windshield-wipes made one swish across the windshield -dashboard switched over to night mode -hands-free phone button lights on steering wheel turned off and would not function -hands-free phone function on display screen would not function properly -false maintenance warnings appeared on dash-display e.g. have rear axle checked and have restraint system checked -I stopped the car and turned it off. When I restarted the car everything was normal again! Note: this car does NOT have any automated braking systems. GM Canada and the GM Dealership have been unable to determine the cause of the above incident nor duplicate in during road-tests.

THE LAP-SHOULDER BELT WILL NOT REMAIN IN THE SEAT BELT GUIDE AS IT SHOULD. THEREFOR THE SEAT BELT DOES NOT FIT OVER THE SHOULDER AND ACROSS THE CHEST OF SMALLER ADULTS OR OLDER CHILDREN AS REQUIRED TO KEEP THEM SAFE IN THE EVENT OF A COLLISION. THE SEAT BELT COMES OUT OF THE GUIDE WHEN MOVING AND AT TIMES WHEN STATIONARY. THE GAP IN THE GUIDE IS TOO LARGE. THIS PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE SO PREVALENT THAT AN AFTER MARKET CLIP IS ON THE MARKET TO HOLD THE SEAT BELT INTO PLACE.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
