Complaints frequently mention hard shifting between first and second gears, sudden transmission failure while driving, and recurring cooling system problems, such as radiator hose and coolant pump failures, often at mileages ranging from 31,000 to over 52,000 miles. Symptoms described include unexpected check engine lights, abnormal grinding sounds, and unintended braking, with some incidents occurring as early as 600 miles. These issues pose safety risks, such as sudden loss of power and unintended deceleration, which could lead to potential crashes. Prospective buyers should be aware of these recurring problems and the associated safety implications.

7 complaints total
STEERING (6 complaints)

STEERING

6 complaints

Owners report two primary issues with the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado's steering system. First, several complaints describe a failure of the power steering assist, often accompanied by simultaneous braking issues, which occurs intermittently and can make the vehicle difficult to control. This problem is noted around the 24,000-mile mark and is linked to dashboard warnings such as "Service Power Steering Drive With Care." Second, multiple owners mention a turn signal malfunction where the indicator blinks in the opposite direction after completing a turn, potentially confusing other drivers. These issues are reported to persist despite multiple repair attempts, and they present safety implications, particularly with the potential for loss of vehicle control and misleading turn signals.

6 complaints total
EXTERIOR LIGHTING (6 complaints)

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

6 complaints

Owners report a recurring issue with the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado where the left turn signal activates unexpectedly after completing a right turn. This occurs even after attempts to resolve the issue by replacing the turn signal switch. Complaints frequently mention that this problem persists at various speeds and is not resolved by dealership interventions. Additionally, when a trailer is connected, the left turn signal flashes rapidly, or the onboard diagnostics fail to recognize the left turn signal. These issues are reported from the time of purchase, with no specific mileage range indicated. While no crashes or injuries are noted, the unexpected activation of turn signals may pose a safety risk by confusing other drivers.

6 complaints total
LANE DEPARTURE (5 complaints)

LANE DEPARTURE

5 complaints

Owners of the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado frequently report issues with the vehicle's lane departure and blind spot monitoring systems. Typical symptoms include false activation of the blind spot warning lights when no vehicles are present, and the vehicle attempting to correct the driver's lane position based on these erroneous alerts. Complaints often mention these problems occurring shortly after purchase, with some vehicles having as little as 5 miles on the odometer. Safety implications are significant, as unintended braking and lane correction could lead to potential accidents. Buyers should be aware that these issues persist despite multiple repair attempts and communication with dealerships and the manufacturer.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL (2 complaints)

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

2 complaints

Owners report issues with the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado's vehicle speed control, specifically unintended acceleration and gear shifting problems. Complaints frequently mention the vehicle accelerating on its own both at stops and at highway speeds, as well as sputtering and jolting forward when starting from a stop. One owner notes that the problem is reproducible, but the dealership requires a check engine light to address it. No warning lights or messages typically accompany these issues, and one complaint indicates that the dealership could not determine the cause despite confirming the issue. These symptoms pose potential safety risks, such as loss of control, though no crashes or injuries are reported.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
