2022 Chevrolet Colorado Common Problems by Component
39 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
STEERING
11 complaintsOwners of the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado frequently report issues with the steering system, particularly a notchy or sticky feeling when turning the wheel, often accompanied by abnormal noises. These symptoms typically occur at lower mileages, around 20,000 miles, and can lead to difficulty in maneuvering the vehicle. Several complaints also mention problems with the ignition key getting stuck in the steering column, requiring multiple attempts or battery disconnection to remove it. Safety implications are notable, as one report describes the steering wheel locking up while driving, posing a risk of losing control. Buyers considering this model should be aware of these potential steering and ignition issues, as they appear to affect the vehicle's usability and safety.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
9 complaintsOwners of the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado frequently report issues with the fuel gauge providing inaccurate readings, either showing full when the tank is not or fluctuating unexpectedly, with symptoms often emerging around 10,000 to 19,000 miles. Additionally, multiple owners describe persistent battery drain issues linked to the infotainment system, leaving vehicles stranded due to parasitic draw, particularly after software updates. Another common problem involves difficulty removing the key from the ignition, attributed to the vehicle not recognizing when it is in park. Some owners also mention that the radio dials become non-illuminated when the dimmer is used, posing a potential distraction risk. These issues can affect vehicle usability and safety, particularly in situations where accurate fuel readings and reliable ignition function are critical.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
6 complaintsOwners of the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado frequently report issues related to the ignition system, specifically difficulties with removing the key from the ignition switch. Symptoms include the key being stuck and requiring repeated attempts to turn the ignition to the correct position for removal, sometimes resulting in a hot key shaft. This problem is described as intermittent but increasing in frequency. Another common issue involves the inability to shift the console handle into the PARK position, which prevents the ignition key from being removed and leaves the vehicle in ACCESSORIES mode. Additionally, complaints highlight driver distraction concerns due to the functionality of Apple CarPlay and the display of extensive text menus while driving. These issues do not mention specific mileage ranges but are noted as safety concerns, particularly in situations where the vehicle cannot be left unattended.
SERVICE BRAKES (4 complaints)
SERVICE BRAKES
4 complaintsOwners of the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado report issues primarily related to brake performance, often citing a hard brake pedal and difficulty stopping. Symptoms typically include the brake pedal requiring excessive force to slow or stop the vehicle, with some cases leading to a complete vacuum pump failure, which also results in engine damage. These issues appear at varying mileages, with one report noting a failure at 69,000 miles. Additionally, some owners experience premature brake pad wear, needing replacement as early as 27,000 miles, and repeated incidents of front driver-side brake locking shortly after purchase. Safety implications are noted, including the potential for loss of vehicle control due to brake failure.
STRUCTURE (2 complaints)
STRUCTURE
2 complaintsOwners of the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado report issues related to the vehicle's structure, primarily involving the ignition system and water intrusion. One complaint describes difficulty in removing the ignition key after turning off the vehicle, requiring the owner to restart the vehicle and manipulate the gear shifter and steering wheel to extract the key. Another owner notes water accumulation under the front passenger floor mat after driving in heavy rain, with moisture appearing to originate from the area near the front tire wall. These issues are reported shortly after purchase, with one occurring during the vehicle's first use in adverse weather. No safety implications such as crashes or loss of control are mentioned in the complaints.
POWER TRAIN (2 complaints)
POWER TRAIN
2 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado report issues with the power train, particularly in cold weather conditions. One complaint describes a hard downshift with two clunks when braking, which occurs primarily in freezing temperatures and can cause the vehicle to slide on slippery surfaces. Another incident involves the vehicle unexpectedly rolling back after being placed in park, leading to a crash and injury, with abnormal whining sounds from the transmission. This incident happened at approximately 7,950 miles. Safety implications include loss of vehicle control and an injury from the crash, making these reports relevant for potential buyers considering the vehicle's reliability in colder climates and the safety of its parking mechanism.
BACK OVER PREVENTION (1 complaints)
BACK OVER PREVENTION

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL (1 complaints)
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
1 complaintI like to have metric units active in my vehicle and this Colorado enables me to switch to metric (i.e. 24h clock, temperature in Celsius, mileage in km,...) It is my understanding that, in the US, this function is allowed but the current speed must also always be displayed somewhere. This is not the case. When switching to metric ALL units everywhere switch to metric, also the current speed is not shown anywhere in miles, so I can never make sure that I am not exceeding the speed limit. It also affects the cruise control function as, also there, I can not see the speed in miles per hour. I have brought up this topic to the manufacturer and was told "working as designed" I think this needs to be addressed with the manufacturer and a SW update needs to be released to keep at least one display always on miles when going to metric units.
EQUIPMENT (1 complaints)
EQUIPMENT
1 complaintThis is a driver distraction report about Apple CarPlay which likely occurs in the same way in every other vehicle with Apple CarPlay. (Since CarPlay and Android Auto become more and more common a special category should probably be created to enable customers to report safety critical topics) Since iOS14 Apple has switched off the simple map scrolling and zooming functions and made it a big effort to change anything on the map while driving. During the time to zoom and move the map I am constantly distracted from looking at the street which leads to dangerous situations in thousands of cars every day multiple times. Apple is not reachable for a topic like this Before iOS14 I could simply move the map and zoom in and out like I can on the phone itself: very intuitive and fast. Since iOS 14 this function has changed: now I am not able anymore to zoom and move the map easily. I have to touch the screen, wait about 750ms for new Plus and Minus Zoom buttons to appear: Only then can I zoom and and out of the map. The delay of these buttons to appear is dangerous and takes my attention away from looking at the street to then click again on plus or minus. But I can still not move the map easily! I have to again touch the screen, wait for about 750ms again for the buttons to appear which then show me also a "move" button to enable the move function. Once the move function is activated I get 4 more buttons on each side of the map (north, east, south, west) where I can touch on to move the map into the corresponding direction. It is not easy to move the map around as I constantly have to coordinate my eyes, fingers and mind to hit the right button and hit it multiple times to make the map move to where I want it to be - while driving this is not easy at all and takes again and again a lot of my attention away from looking at the street. I think it is dangerous and safety critical and needs to be addressed

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
