2025 BMW X3 Common Problems by Component
27 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
7 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners report several electrical system issues in the 2025 BMW X3, particularly involving infotainment system failures and recall-related electrical defects. Complaints frequently mention the center display screen going black while driving, which results in the loss of critical navigation and vehicle information. Multiple owners describe problems with the vehicle's electrical connections, specifically related to a recall issue that can cause engine stalling or even fires, with one incident resulting in a fire after parking. One complaint also involves a crash due to unintended acceleration, suggesting potential safety risks. These issues appear soon after purchase and affect both personal and loaner vehicles, indicating possible systemic concerns.
STEERING
4 complaintsOwners report multiple steering-related issues with the 2025 BMW X3. Complaints frequently mention a "Changed Steering effort" error leading to a complete loss of power steering, with dealers indicating the steering rack may need replacement. Another common issue involves a clunking noise and vibration felt through the steering wheel and brake pedal, particularly at low speeds or over uneven surfaces, which some owners note persists despite multiple service visits. Additionally, a gridding noise during steering maneuvers, especially when parking or turning from a stop, is reported, with attempts to fix it through tie rod replacement proving ineffective. Safety implications include a sudden loss of propulsion and power, creating traffic hazards, as well as potential stress on other vehicle components. These issues are noted to occur shortly after purchase, with one owner experiencing problems as early as three days after acquiring the vehicle.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
4 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2025 BMW X3 report several issues related to the Forward Collision Avoidance system. Complaints frequently mention the system either engaging too late or not at all, as seen in two incidents resulting in crashes where the system reportedly failed to provide timely warnings or braking. Another common symptom includes unexpected emergency stops without apparent cause, nearly leading to rear-end collisions. Some owners also report abrupt disengagement of the Driver Assistance system during cruise mode, which could pose safety risks. These issues are noted across various driving conditions and do not specify a consistent mileage range, suggesting potential variability in occurrence.
BACK OVER PREVENTION (2 complaints)
BACK OVER PREVENTION
2 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2025 BMW X3 report problems with the back over prevention systems, specifically the rear view camera and parking assist features. One issue involves the rear view camera being obstructed by on-screen elements when interacting with buttons, requiring the driver to shift between park and reverse to reset the display. Another complaint describes a crash attributed to the parking assist system failing to engage a pre-set backing path when the vehicle was not fully stopped, despite the system indicating otherwise. This incident resulted in a collision with a house, highlighting a potential safety risk. These issues are noted without specific mileage details, but they underscore potential concerns for buyers considering this model.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING (1 complaints)
EXTERIOR LIGHTING
1 complaintWhen using the headlights there is a shadow across the top half of our windshield. The dealership was not able to fix, they acknowledged they could see what we are referring to. They are going to file a report with BMW. I do not know what to do in the meantime. This is our main transportation. This definitely needs a safety recall.
SEATS (1 complaints)
SEATS
1 complaintAfter driving car a few minutes with the heated seats “on”, the driver’s seat became extremely hot. Driver burned finger upon checking the seat and a hole was burned through the seat upholstery. No warning lamps or messages appeared. We were concerned for further overheating or possible fire. Car has been at A & L Dealership, Monroeville, PA, since November 28, 2025. A & L Dealership notified us the vehicle had “short circuit in wiring”.
VISIBILITY/WIPER (1 complaints)
VISIBILITY/WIPER
1 complaintOE Windshield failed with a crack from no strike or extremely small pebbles. Have had to replace windshield 2x in 3 months of ownership. Others with the same FUYAO glass have had to replace multiple times as well. Owners are starting to figure out there may be a manufacturing defect in the glass.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER (1 complaints)
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
1 complaintWithin 2 months of buying the new vehicle this year in February 2025, a rodent entered the vehicle through the air suction vent, reached the cabin air filter and damaged it. The vehicle tech told me that it was good that the rodent didn't damage the car wiring. Else it could have cost me thousands of dollars. But I think, it is a safety concern as well. If the rodent would have chewed the wiring insulation, shorting of two wires or broken wires can cause safety risk while driving by causing sudden malfunctioning. So, I told BMW that it is manufacturing defect, and they should 1) Put a mesh barrier to prevent from future access of any rodent. 2) Pay for the repair because my car is covered by bumper-to-bumper warranty. They didn't accept any of my above requests. So, I had to pay for the repairs, and the defect still remains which can cause similar or worse damage.
SUSPENSION (1 complaints)
SUSPENSION
1 complaintBrand new 2025 BMW X3 loud suspension noise coming front the font below 20 miles per hour. The car has ~5,000 miles. It happens every time and is pretty consistent. You can hear every imperfection on the road. I think is can be a safety concert - I see multiple reports that having similar concern.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
