POWER TRAIN

6 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2022 BMW X3 frequently report drivetrain malfunctions, with symptoms including sudden deceleration and a "drivetrain malfunction" warning message. Several complaints describe issues occurring at varying mileages, such as a broken axle at 20,000 miles and a vehicle entering limp mode at highway speeds, posing significant safety risks. One serious incident involved the vehicle emitting smoke and catching fire, with a drivetrain malfunction message appearing post-incident. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM (6 complaints)

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

6 complaints

Owners of the 2022 BMW X3 frequently report issues with the vehicle's electrical system, particularly involving the start-stop technology and electronic shifting, which can leave the vehicle immobilized in traffic and unable to be placed in neutral without accessing a service panel. Complaints also highlight problems with the instrument cluster failing sporadically, which affects the functionality of front collision and lane departure systems, leading to potential safety risks. Additional reports include the rear hatch opening unexpectedly without warning and persistent activation of the car horn when doors or the hatch are opened, making the vehicle undrivable due to noise. These issues are noted across varied timelines, with some occurring within 18 months of ownership, and they pose significant safety implications, such as the risk of accidents and road rage incidents.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE (5 complaints)

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

5 complaintsSafety-related

Owners report several issues with the forward collision avoidance system in the 2022 BMW X3, primarily involving the KAFAS camera system. Complaints frequently mention that the bracket or clips holding the camera to the windshield fail, often due to heat, leading to misalignment and system errors. Symptoms include failure to display collision warnings and error messages related to driver assistance features. One report involves a crash with two injuries, where the forward collision warning did not activate, resulting in a total vehicle loss. Owners note that some issues may require windshield replacement, and similar failures are confirmed by dealerships and online forums.

5 complaints total1 crash2 injuries
LANE DEPARTURE (4 complaints)

LANE DEPARTURE

4 complaints

Owners report frequent issues with the 2022 BMW X3's front camera system, particularly involving the KAFAS camera mount. Complaints consistently mention that the plastic mount holding the camera is prone to breaking or melting, especially under heat exposure, leading to camera misalignment and disabling of safety features such as lane departure warning and pedestrian avoidance braking. These failures often result in a cascade of error codes and require a full windshield replacement, as the bracket is not sold separately. Some owners note that dealerships are reluctant to cover these issues under warranty, especially if modifications like aftermarket window film are present. The problem appears to emerge relatively early in the vehicle's life, with no specific mileage range consistently reported.

4 complaints total
AIR BAGS (3 complaints)

AIR BAGS

3 complaints

Owners report issues with the airbag system in the 2022 BMW X3, primarily involving unexpected airbag deployment without any impact or accident. Two complaints describe side curtain airbags deploying while driving, and one incident resulted in an injury. Another owner notes a warning message for "Passenger Restraint System Malfunctioned" appearing after refueling, which they were informed is not covered by their extended warranty. These issues suggest potential safety implications due to unprompted airbag deployment, although no specific mileage or timeline patterns are evident from the complaints.

3 complaints total1 injury
STEERING (3 complaints)

STEERING

3 complaints

Owners of the 2022 BMW X3 report recurring issues with the steering system, particularly involving loss of power steering and a "stuck" steering wheel that requires excessive force to maneuver. Complaints frequently mention that these issues are accompanied by multiple warning messages and codes, including "Loss Communications Brake System Control Module A," which can also affect the speedometer and stability control. One owner notes that the vehicle has gone out of control while driving, indicating significant safety implications. The issues appear to occur randomly and have been reported as early as 15,000 miles. Buyers should be aware of potential safety hazards and the possibility of unresolved steering component failures in this model.

ENGINE (2 complaints)

ENGINE

2 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2022 BMW X3 report two main engine-related issues. One complaint involves a severe incident where smoke from under the hood escalated to a fire, completely destroying the vehicle. This incident occurred without any warning lights, highlighting a serious safety risk. Another owner describes intermittent stalling while driving at approximately 30 MPH, with no warning lights and no determined cause after dealer inspection. This stalling issue is reported at a high mileage of approximately 150,000 miles. These complaints flag potential safety implications, particularly the risk of fire and unexpected stalling.

2 complaints total1 fire
SERVICE BRAKES (2 complaints)

SERVICE BRAKES

2 complaints

Owners of the 2022 BMW X3 report issues with brake pads wearing out prematurely, with one owner noting replacement was necessary around 16,000 miles, significantly earlier than the expected 35,000 to 40,000 miles. Another complaint highlights a safety concern where the brakes fail to engage properly when traction control is activated in snowy conditions, requiring excessive force to stop the vehicle. This issue was experienced at approximately 9,000 miles. Both complaints suggest potential safety implications, with one owner describing a near-miss incident due to the vehicle unintentionally shifting from "Drive" to "Neutral" while moving. These reports may be of interest to potential buyers considering the reliability and safety of the braking system in these vehicles.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
