3 complaints

Owners of the 2022 BMW 5-Series report several issues related to mechanical and structural components. A common complaint involves the transmission, with one owner noting a persistent jerking motion without dashboard alerts, indicating potential recall inclusion for certain models. Another owner describes a high-pitched noise from the air conditioning system, attributed to a failing compressor that affects cabin cooling and battery temperature regulation, with repair costs estimated at $5,000. A separate incident involves the sudden explosion of the glass roof while driving, resulting in injuries from glass shards. These issues highlight potential safety risks, including mechanical failure and personal injury, with no clear mileage pattern emerging from the complaints.

POWER TRAIN

2 complaints

Owners of the 2022 BMW 5-Series report issues with the power train, specifically involving sudden loss of motive power. Typical symptoms include the vehicle displaying warnings such as "Drive Train Malfunction" and "Reduced Power," followed by an inability to maintain speed or accelerate, which can occur at highway speeds. These issues are noted at mileage as low as 7,000 miles. One complaint highlights a potential link to temperature stress affecting drivetrain components, suggesting a risk of propulsion loss in certain conditions. Safety implications are significant, as these failures can occur in high-speed traffic, posing a hazard when the vehicle loses power unexpectedly.

BACK OVER PREVENTION

2 complaints

Owners of the 2022 BMW 5-Series report issues with the back over prevention system, including sensor and camera malfunctions. Complaints frequently mention that the front right sensor stops working, and approximately seven weeks later, the backup camera also fails. Symptoms include the parking assistance system not functioning when approaching obstacles and intermittent operation of the sensors. Another common issue is the cross traffic alert system failing to detect side traffic, only responding to objects directly in the vehicle's path. These problems can potentially lead to safety risks, such as near-miss accidents, as described by one owner.

AIR BAGS (2 complaints)

AIR BAGS

2 complaintsSafety-related

Owners report issues with the airbag system in the 2022 BMW 5-Series, with complaints frequently mentioning a "Passenger Restraint" service message potentially related to the seat or floor sensor. One complaint describes a crash where side airbags did not deploy, resulting in injuries to the driver and a passenger, despite no prior system warnings. The incident suggests potential safety implications, particularly concerning side airbag deployment in real-world accidents. These issues are reported without specific mileage, indicating they may occur at various points in the vehicle's lifespan. Prospective buyers should be aware of these airbag concerns when considering this model.

Sensors around vehicle are faulty and break and/or become dysfunctional very easily. Improper and/or no warning provides false sense of security or danger. BMW is requesting customers pay to address the faulty product sensors. Service representative informed me that it is a known issue but the manufacturer has yet to deal with the problem. Vehicle has only 20K miles on it and in perfect condition besides these faulty sensors.

Vehicle continues to take over randomly when no vehicle, object, pedestrian or other item is on the road ahead of the hood. This persistent problem has been reported to the manufacturer and BMW dealerships on no less than (6) occasions – BMW advises the vehicle performs normally which isn't the case. ADAS/AEB takes over for no apparent reason, randomly, sometimes a few times per month, other times a few months apart – depending on speed at which the vehicle is traveling, the incident causes soft tissue injuries as was again the case on Friday, (XXX] when vehicle came to an abrupt stop when no vehicle, object, pedestrian or other item was on the road ahead of me as I was traveling southbound around 20mph on [XXX] around [XXX] (weather was sunny, road was dry). I suffered whiplash injuries which was confirmed later in the afternoon by Cedars Sinai hospital group in Beverly Hills, CA. BMW and their dealerships refuse to acknowledge the ADAS/AEB is faulty and continues to deny my safety documented concern which has led my vehicle to be serviced for more than 100 days since taking delivery in 2022, to no avail. FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

2023-02-011 injury

Vehicle randomly and erroneously triggers forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking at different speeds when no car or pedestrian is present on the road and the danger of an imminent collision is actually null. This has happened around 5 times in a year of ownership. Last time this event occurred, the car was traveling around 35 to 40mph which resulted in my getting whiplash (and nearly rear-ended) when the car applied what felt like its full braking power when no one was on the road, the weather was clear and no imminent danger was ahead. No error message ever appeared anywhere on the dash. Brought the vehicle in for service and was advised that the dealer cannot reproduce the issue and that nothing is wrong with the vehicle since no error code is found in the on-board computer. I have since been unwilling to drive my vehicle for extended periods of time for fear of injury to myself, passengers, pet or other road-users.

On Feb.3, 2023, my wife made a turn into a parking lot. She was driving our 2022 BMW 540. She paused and the engine began to rev up. It then shot forward nearly 50 feet and hurled her over a meridian into another car. She pressed as hard as she could on the brake and suffered a torn meniscus ligament. There were no warning lights and although the car hit front right, no airbags were executed. BMW has not sent an official detailed report from their engineer. BMW advertises brake override so pressing both the brake and accelerator would NOT result in this event.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
