ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

3 complaints

Owners of the 2020 Volvo XC40 report issues related to water intrusion affecting the electrical system, leading to significant failures. Complaints frequently mention that water from the panoramic moonroof or undercarriage penetrates seals, damaging electrical connections and modules, which can result in the failure of wipers, turn signals, and high beams during adverse weather conditions. Additionally, some owners describe the vehicle losing motive power, with blank speedometer and infotainment screens, and an illuminated electronic stability program warning light. These issues typically occur around 30,453 miles, as reported by one owner. Safety implications include potential loss of vehicle control due to electrical failures, with no reported maintenance procedures to prevent the problem.

POWER TRAIN

2 complaints

Owners report issues with the power train of the 2020 Volvo XC40, specifically involving sudden unintended acceleration (SUA) events. Symptoms frequently described include the engine surging and revving uncontrollably while stationary, even with the brake fully depressed. Some owners mention prior symptoms like intermittent idle flaring and surging occurring 48 hours before the failure. These incidents often result in a loss of control, with vehicles moving unintentionally into intersections, posing significant safety risks. Complaints do not specify mileage, but the timeline of events suggests these issues can occur within a few years of ownership.

My XC40 has 24, 500 miles on it, and it has already had three sets of brake rotors replaced. The dealership reported "warped rotors" on my front brake rotors in the summer of 2021 at 15,000 miles and replaced them. Now at 24,500 miles, both the front and rear rotors were again "warped" and replaced by the dealership noting that the "rotors had pad transfer marks".

LANE DEPARTURE

Almost once a month my car with think there is something in front of it and activate the emergency brakes. It causes huge strain to the brakes and almost makes me crash and puts the people in front of me and behind me at risk. I've turned the setting to a lower sensitivity to try to avoid this but it doesn't matter. The car does the worst on turns as well and thinks cars in the opposite lanes while turning are in your lane and will cause the system to react. On small roads the car will try to move your car to correct in the lane but it's too small and runs the risk of going off the road or go into oncoming traffic. Most of the time I just have to turn this setting off entirely since it's more dangerous than helpful.

SEAT BELTS (1 complaints)

SEAT BELTS

ISSUE1: A FEW WEEKS AGO WHILE MY WIFE HAD STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT AND WITHOUT ANY PROVOCATION, HER SEATBELT WENT INTO CRASH MODE, TIGHTENING SIGNIFICANTLY AND LOCKING. THIS WAS TO THE POINT THAT SHE FELT BEING SUFFOCATED FROM PRESSURE ON HER ABDOMEN AND CHEST. FORTUNATELY, THE CAR WAS NOT IN MOTION, OTHERWISE, THE SEATBELT TIGHTENING AND LOCK COULD LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT. THE LOCK RELEASED AFTER 30 SECONDS AND SHE COULD OPEN THE SEAT BELT. SHE HAD CHEST PAIN FOR A FEW DAYS AFTER THIS INCIDENT. ISSUE 2: THREE DAYS AGO WHEN MY WIFE WAS REMOVING GROCERIES FROM THE TRUNK OF THE CAR, AND WHILE THE ENGINE WAS OFF, SUDDENLY THE TRUNK DOOR RELEASED ITSELF AND HIT HER ON THE HEAD WITH FULL FORCE. THIS DOOR IS SUPPOSED TO CLOSE ONLY WHEN A SWITCH INSIDE THE TRUNK IS TRIGGERED OR WHEN THE KEY IS USED TO CLOSE THE TRUNK DOOR. NEITHER WAS ENGAGED AT THE TIME AS SHE STILL HAD ITEMS TO REMOVE FROM THE TRUNK. SHE HAS SERIOUS NECK PAIN AND NAUSEA FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS. THE ABOVE INCIDENTS APPEAR TO BE CAUSED BY SOME SORT OF COMPUTER MALFUNCTION. WE ARE CONCERNED ABOUT REPETITION OF THESE INCIDENTS WHICH HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY AND HARM FOR WHICH WE HOLD VOLVO RESPONSIBLE. ISSUES 2 AND 3 ARE OF PARTICULAR CONCERN. SEATBELT LOCK-UP AND SEVERE TIGHTENING DURING DRIVE CAN CAUSE ACCIDENT. THE TRUNK DOOR RELEASING ITSELF SUDDENLY CAN BREAK SOMEONE'S NECK OR CAUSE HEAD INJURY TO US OR GROCERY STORE STAFF WHO HELP US LOAD GROCERIES. INACTION WILL DEFINITELY CONSTITUTE NEGLIGENCE.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.

Get notified when new recalls or reliability data is added for the Volvo XC40.
