44 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
21 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2024 Volkswagen ID-4 frequently report electrical system issues, with common problems including malfunctioning door handles that may cause doors to open unexpectedly and infotainment system failures where screens freeze or go blank. These issues often lead to safety concerns, such as loss of access to critical driving information and potential fire hazards, with one owner describing a windshield fire due to an electrical fault. Complaints typically arise shortly after purchase or within the first few thousand miles, with some owners experiencing recurring electrical failures despite multiple repair attempts. The reports highlight significant safety implications, including doors opening while driving and instances of total electrical shutdowns, which could deter potential buyers looking for reliability and safety in a used vehicle.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
8 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners report several issues with the 2024 Volkswagen ID.4, particularly involving the vehicle's electronic systems and emergency features. Complaints frequently mention failures in the emergency communication system (SOS button) and CarNet connectivity, which can disable critical safety functions. Additionally, some owners describe problems with the infotainment system, such as screens shutting off and incorrect GPS navigation, which impact access to essential driving information. One report includes a crash during parking due to unexpected acceleration, resulting in an injury. These issues are noted in vehicles with low mileage, sometimes as early as 300 miles, and are often unresolved despite multiple dealership visits, posing potential safety risks for buyers.
STRUCTURE
4 complaintsOwners of the 2024 Volkswagen ID-4 commonly report issues with door handles and the vehicle's security system. Complaints frequently mention dead spots in the front door handles following a recall, making them difficult to operate. Additionally, several owners describe problems with the security system, such as doors unlocking independently and the alarm disarming, even after repairs. These issues often occur around 2,100 miles. While there are no reports of crashes or fires, the malfunctioning security system may pose a security risk.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE (2 complaints)
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
2 complaintsOwners of the 2024 Volkswagen ID-4 report issues with the vehicle's forward collision avoidance systems, particularly involving the automatic braking feature and sensor malfunctions. One complaint describes the car braking unexpectedly on highways due to incorrect navigation data indicating a lower speed zone, while another details a persistent error message regarding front parking sensors, leading to a costly repair. The navigation and driver-assist features are noted to disable and reactivate unpredictably. These issues are reported within the first year of ownership, suggesting early-life reliability concerns. Safety implications include the potential for unexpected braking and non-functional emergency braking features, which could affect driving safety.
SERVICE BRAKES (2 complaints)
SERVICE BRAKES
2 complaintsOwners of the 2024 Volkswagen ID-4 report issues with the service brakes, particularly a loss of brake pressure and delayed braking response. Complaints frequently mention the brake pedal being depressed without the vehicle slowing down as expected, with some owners noting that the brake booster appears inoperable. One owner describes additional electrical malfunctions occurring simultaneously, such as the radio volume, windows, and headlamps not functioning correctly. These issues are reported at low mileages, around 500 to 3,000 miles. While no crashes or injuries are reported, the described symptoms suggest potential safety implications due to compromised braking performance.
POWER TRAIN (2 complaints)
POWER TRAIN
2 complaintsOwners of the 2024 Volkswagen ID-4 report issues with the power train, specifically related to vehicle movement and braking. One complaint describes a recurring problem where a "turtle light" activates, causing the car to slow down significantly and instructing the driver to park immediately. Despite attempts to replace a battery module, the issue persists, and parts are on back-order with no resolution timeline. Another owner reports the vehicle rolling backwards unexpectedly on inclines when the brake pedal is released, despite being in drive, due to insufficient brake pressure and the electric motor disengaging. This issue is compounded by the auto-hold feature's inconsistent engagement, leading to potential safety risks such as rolling into other vehicles or pedestrians. These complaints highlight concerns about vehicle control and reliability, especially in stop-and-go or inclined driving conditions.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
