ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

8 complaintsSafety-related

Owners report frequent issues with the electrical system of the 2025 Volkswagen ID-4, particularly involving the infotainment and central display, which often crashes or becomes unresponsive, disrupting essential functions like climate control, navigation, and vehicle settings. These problems occur while driving and are noted to cause significant distraction and potential safety risks, with some vehicles being out of service for extended periods due to the lack of a permanent fix. Additionally, one complaint involves a fire during a routine charging session, raising safety concerns. Incidents of sudden acceleration and repeated electrical failures, including complete display shutdowns, are also mentioned, with some owners experiencing these issues shortly after purchase.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

3 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2025 Volkswagen ID-4 report instances of unexpected vehicle acceleration, particularly while parking or driving at low speeds. Complaints frequently mention that the vehicle accelerates without the driver pressing the accelerator pedal, often while the vehicle is in regenerative braking mode. Two of the three reported incidents resulted in crashes with other parked vehicles, highlighting potential safety implications. The reports do not indicate any prior warning signs or illuminated warning lights before these events. One complaint notes a failure mileage of approximately 132,000, though other reports do not specify mileage, suggesting that the issue may not be isolated to a specific mileage range.

BACK OVER PREVENTION

2 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2025 Volkswagen ID-4 report issues with the back over prevention system and unintended acceleration. One complaint describes the absence of an audible alert while reversing, with no warning lights to indicate a malfunction, at approximately 3,100 miles. Another report involves a crash where the vehicle unexpectedly accelerated despite the brake being applied, resulting in a collision with a parked van and non-deployment of airbags. Safety implications include the potential for crashes, as evidenced by the reported incident. These issues could be pertinent for potential buyers considering the vehicle's reliability and safety features.

2 complaints total1 crash
UNKNOWN OR OTHER (2 complaints)

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

2 complaints

Owners of the 2025 Volkswagen ID-4 report issues with the vehicle unlocking itself without user input, potentially exposing the car to security risks. Additionally, multiple complaints describe problems with the infotainment system, which either reboots while driving or becomes non-functional with a black screen upon starting the car. These issues result in the temporary loss of access to navigation, climate control, and safety features like the backup camera. The problems have been observed multiple times within a short span, such as three occurrences in a week or over four weeks. Safety implications are noted, particularly when the backup camera and other assistive features are unavailable, posing a hazard during driving.

2026-01-04Fire reported

I turned on the defroster for the front windshield for the first time on this new vehicle. I had it on for a few minutes to defrost ice from the windshield. Immediately after turning it off, I heard a loud cracking noise. The bottom of the windshield cracked violently at the bottom near the heating element, and some of the glass also heated up so much or sparked that it melted some elements of the car near there. The large cracks are spreading and are obscuring my vision while driving. I am also afraid to turn back on the defroster, despite needing it in the snow this week, fearing that the windshield will crack further or melt/catch fire again. I've read online that this is happening to others with the higher trims that include the heated windshield. The sudden cracks are appearing in the same place in others' cars after they use the defroster. There is now a class-action lawsuit against Volkswagen for this very issue in Canada. The dealer says that there must have been an existing chip in the windshield and that I am responsible, but that was absolutely not the case. And even so, the car shouldn't be melting or catching fire regardless!

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE (1 complaints)

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

1 complaintSafety-related
2025-10-22Crash reported1 injury

The vehicle launched forward while parking going thru a CMU wall, causing considerable damage to the structure and the car itself. Airbag was deployed injuring the driver and causing a cut in the bottom lip and skin burns on the left hand from a small fire that went thru the clothes. Also, the driver was in state of shock after the incident due to the speed at which everything occurred. During the day, the driver complained about dizziness and pain at the base of the neck, numbness/pain in the face. Additionally, the driver pressed the brake pedal to try to avoid the crash but did not prevent the car from launching forward. It appears that the capacitive controls located on the left side of the steering wheel, were inadvertently reengaged while the driver was maneuvering to park. VW of America requested the car to be dropped of at the dealer but has not looked at it as of the time of this reporting. The incident occurred earlier this morning and still getting appraisal for damages of both the property and vehicle. No warning lights were present before the incident, however there were anomalies with the infotainment system days prior to the accident.

SERVICE BRAKES

The vehicle has difficulty coming to a stop and requires slamming the brakes in full which causes a loud churning noise, the braking is intermittent, sometimes it works well and sometimes it works terribly. It is a huge safety issue. Also the lane keep assist seems to not work so well as well, it will drift out of the lanes at times when it is on

On [XXX], I was parking my 2025 VW ID.4 car in a parking spot in B mode and applying the brake to come to a stop. The car suddenly accelerated forward (of its own will) at maximum speed such that the car ran over a bollard, a sidewalk and into a brick wall causing significant damage. In the space of perhaps 10 feet at most the car went from a stopping position to taking out a brick wall on a commercial building. This is so incredibly dangerous as someone could have been on the sidewalk and killed. I could have been killed as my airbag never deployed despite charging with great speed into a brick wall! NHTSA must do something to resolve this. VW has overwhelming knowledge of this defect. In June 2025 a class action lawsuit was filed against the VW for this exact reason - link here: [XXX] Per the lawsuit there have been deaths related to this defect. This was never disclosed to me when I bought the car....as a matter of fact, the EV safety features in their sales pitch was one of the overwhelming reasons I bought the car. There are also many blogs related to this issue describing almost exactly what happened to me. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
