30 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
POWER TRAIN
7 complaintsOwners report multiple power train issues with the 2025 Volkswagen Atlas, primarily involving transmission malfunctions and shifter problems. Complaints frequently mention the vehicle failing to engage in Drive or Reverse, often requiring multiple attempts to shift, and instances where the vehicle unexpectedly enters limp mode, limiting speed to 25 MPH. Symptoms typically occur at low mileages, with some vehicles affected shortly after purchase, as early as 5 miles, and others around 13,000 miles. Safety implications are noted, such as vehicles stopping abruptly in traffic or failing to accelerate properly when turning, posing potential risks in active roadways. Additionally, dashboard warning lights and error messages related to the transmission and engine are common, with some owners experiencing prolonged periods without a resolution.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
6 complaintsOwners of the 2025 Volkswagen Atlas report several issues under varied conditions. One common problem involves the vehicle's electronic system, with complaints of the screen shutting off, affecting functions like radio, AC, and sensors, typically occurring around 6,000 miles. Another frequent issue is transmission-related, where the vehicle fails to shift properly or respond to the accelerator, leading to potential safety risks, especially during highway driving. Additionally, some owners describe the panoramic sunroof shattering spontaneously and a high-gloss console causing blinding reflections. These issues generally arise in new vehicles with low mileage, and some pose significant safety implications, such as loss of vehicle control or injury from shattered glass.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
6 complaintsOwners of the 2025 Volkswagen Atlas frequently report issues with the vehicle's electrical system, particularly affecting the infotainment display, autonomous braking, and battery function. Symptoms include the vehicle shutting off unexpectedly while driving, infotainment and safety features like the back over prevention camera and blind spot monitoring becoming inoperable, and the autonomous braking system activating without cause. Several complaints note these issues occurring at low mileages, such as 5,500 miles or shortly after purchase. Safety implications are significant, with reports of the vehicle stopping in traffic and autonomous braking activating without obstacles, posing risks of sudden stops. Buyers should be aware of these recurring electrical issues and the potential for unexpected vehicle behavior.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE (2 complaints)
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
2 complaintsOwners report issues with the 2025 Volkswagen Atlas related to the forward collision avoidance system and infotainment system. A recurring problem involves the vehicle's collision system activating unexpectedly, causing sudden deceleration or braking at highway speeds (70-80mph) despite no obstacles being present, which poses a risk of accidents. Additionally, multiple owners describe problems with the infotainment system failing, impacting vehicle functions and requiring dealer intervention, though a permanent fix is not yet available. These issues occur within a few months of ownership, with one owner noting the problem resurfaced shortly after a repair attempt. These reports indicate potential safety risks and inconvenience due to system malfunctions.
STEERING (2 complaints)
STEERING
2 complaintsOwners of the 2025 Volkswagen Atlas report issues with the steering system, particularly involving the steering wheel locking up during operation. Complaints frequently mention this problem occurring while turning or reversing, with one owner experiencing the issue twice in two days on a 7-day-old vehicle. Symptoms described include the sudden locking of the steering wheel, accompanied by error codes related to brake, steering, hill assist, and front assist failures, and in one instance, the check engine light illuminating briefly. The safety implications are significant, as one owner narrowly avoided a crash and expressed concern about potential accidents in busy intersections. These issues are reported at very low mileage, suggesting they can occur soon after purchase.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL (1 complaints)
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
1 complaintThe vehicle has a speed limit sign feature where it displays the speed limit of the road you are on in the windshield. However, this is displaying inaccurate speeds limits which is very dangerous. I have contacted Volkswagen about the issue and they advised that there is nothing they can do. If someone where to use my car and trust the information that Volkswagen it could be very dangerous.
VISIBILITY/WIPER (1 complaints)
VISIBILITY/WIPER
1 complaintThis morning I noticed a five inch crack in my windshield. I have not hit anything or had road debris come up and hit the windshield. I live in Spokane WA where there is a lot of freeze and thaw. My son has the same vehicle and his windshield cracked in the same spot. Going online to the vw atlas forum and this seems to be a common issue.
SEAT BELTS (1 complaints)
SEAT BELTS
1 complaintI am writing to formally escalate a serious safety concern regarding my 2025 Volkswagen Atlas, purchased in March 2025 from Prestige Volkswagen in Turnersville, NJ. The middle row left seatbelt has demonstrated an intermittent failure on multiple occasions over the past month. Specifically: At times, the seatbelt will not latch At other times, it appears to click, but can then be pulled out without pressing the release button This issue has been personally experienced by myself, my husband, and my mother, on separate occasions. Because the failure is intermittent, it does not occur every time the seatbelt is used — which is exactly what makes this defect concerning. I brought the vehicle to Prestige Volkswagen Turnersville, where the service department and service manager stated they cannot replace the seatbelt unless they can duplicate the problem. Their assessment consisted of manually tugging on the buckle until it appeared to function properly. I explained that testing a stationary seatbelt in a service bay is not equivalent to real-world forces during a motor vehicle collision, and that an intermittent failure of a federally required safety restraint presents a significant risk of injury should the buckle disengage during an accident. Despite this, the dealership has refused to replace the seatbelt assembly. I also opened a Volkswagen Customer Care case, which was escalated to a manager Aaron. I was informed that after speaking with the dealership, Volkswagen would not authorize replacement because the issue could not be duplicated. I am requesting Volkswagen of America’s direct assistance in resolving this safety concern. A seatbelt that fails intermittently is not operating as designed, regardless of whether the defect can be reproduced on demand. I respectfully request authorization to replace the affected seatbelt assembly under warranty to ensure the safety of all passengers.
SERVICE BRAKES (1 complaints)
SERVICE BRAKES
1 complaintThe contact owns a 2025 Volkswagen Atlas. The contact stated that while driving at 35 MPH, the brakes independently engaged. The contact was unable to disengage the brakes. The vehicle was stopped in the middle of the road with several warning unknown lights illuminated, and undisclosed messages were displayed. The contact turned off the vehicle, and after several restarting attempts, the contact was unable to disengage the brakes. The contact was unable to move the shift lever. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that an undisclosed update was needed. An unknown update was performed on the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 3,000.
LANE DEPARTURE (1 complaints)
LANE DEPARTURE
1 complaintWhen driving on a road with lane markings after the vehicle has been sitting in direct sunlight for about an hour the Lane Keep Assist system will fail due to over temperature warning in the windshield camera module. The dashboard will display the message “Lane Assist is currently not available. Please see owner's manual.” and any driver assist system that utilizes the lane assist system will become unavailable for about 15 minutes. After about 15 minutes of driving the errors will go away as the system reboots itself with no notification that the system functionality has returned. The “over temperature” error was confirmed by my local VW dealership on June 10, 2025 but has occurred 3 separate times.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
