WHEELS

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2023 Subaru Solterra and Toyota BZ4X vehicles. The hub bolts on the wheels may loosen, causing a wheel to detach from the vehicle after low-mileage use.

Consequence

A wheel detaching from a moving vehicle can result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until they are repaired. Dealers will replace the hub bolts and wheels, free of charge. Letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed June 27, 2022. A second letter will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

3 complaints

Owners report recurring issues with the 2023 Toyota Bz4x's electrical system, primarily involving the vehicle's failure to start. Complaints frequently mention that the car is without power, even when the starter battery has been recently replaced or charged. Symptoms include dashboard messages such as “parking brake unavailable” and flashing brake lights, with some incidents occurring when the vehicle is parked in a garage. These issues are reported at mileage as low as 5,283 and up to 18,878 miles. No crashes, fires, or loss of control have been reported, but the inability to start the vehicle is a consistent inconvenience.

STRUCTURE

2 complaints

Owners of the 2023 Toyota Bz4x report issues with the vehicle's structure, particularly involving the undercarriage components and wheel well liners. Complaints frequently mention that driving through 2-3 inches of standing water at speeds ranging from 15 to 40 mph causes parts like the undercarriage splash plate and mud guard liners to become loose or detach. These incidents are reported in vehicles as new as six months old. While no crashes or loss of control are noted, the detachment of parts may lead to repair costs, as some owners report being quoted up to $4000. Used car buyers should be aware of these potential structural vulnerabilities when considering this model.

2 complaints total

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

2 complaints

Owners of the 2023 Toyota Bz4x report issues related to the air conditioning and HVAC systems. Common symptoms include error messages and malfunctioning mileage displays associated with AC compressor problems, as well as foul odors emanating from air conditioning vents. In one case, the odor was traced to mold on floor mats due to water pooling, linked to a blockage caused by a spider web in the HVAC system. These issues appear in vehicles with mileage under 11,000 miles and within two years of purchase. No safety implications such as crashes or loss of control are reported in these complaints.

TIRES (2 complaints)

TIRES

2 complaints

Owners of the 2023 Toyota Bz4x report issues with the vehicle's tires, specifically the Bridgestone Turanza EL450, size 235/50/R20. Complaints frequently mention flat tires and low tire pressure warnings, with incidents occurring around the 5,000-mile mark. Symptoms described include flat tires found in personal garages and on the road, with one owner noting severe sidewall bubbling necessitating tire replacement. Safety implications are noted as one vehicle required towing due to a flat tire on the road. Buyers should be aware of these tire issues, particularly the absence of a spare tire and reliance on a fix-a-flat kit.

On [XXX] I was involved in a collision with another vehicle on [XXX] , while driving my 2023 Toyota bZ4X. Despite the impact's severity, the airbags in my vehicle did not deploy, even though the other vehicle’s airbags did, suggesting that the impact was sufficient to trigger airbag deployment in similar conditions. After the accident, the Toyota app displayed a warning message indicating that the airbags required inspection, raising concerns about a potential malfunction in the airbag system. The failure of the airbags to deploy posed a significant risk to my safety, as the airbags are a critical safety feature designed to reduce injury in collisions. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by Toyota or a certified service center to determine the cause of the airbag failure. Prior to the collision, there were no visible warning lights or error messages on the dashboard indicating any issues with the airbag system. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Twice now on highways in medium rainfall, with lots of water on the road and a lot of spray, the assisted cruise control has failed to identify a vehicle in the lane in front of it, and continued to accelerate towards braking vehicles. One such occasions I was within 3-4 car lengths of the vehicle in front of me.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

I submitted this form earlier, but I’m unsure whether it went through. If this is a duplicate, please disregard. An incident of sudden, unintended acceleration occurred while pulling into a gravel parking area on a hillside at dusk. While turning, the vehicle suddenly lunged forward and struck a tree stump. It would have been avoided without the sudden acceleration. The driver slammed on the brakes, and the vehicle came to rest right at the edge of a downward slope. Five seconds earlier, and a family member, who had come out of the house to show where he wanted the car parked, could have been killed, or seriously injured. The car was towed to Toyota Of Erie, where it was inspected by a corporate inspector. It remains there until a decision is made. The adaptive cruise control, which was used on the trip, had been canceled, and the brakes were used several times after exiting the freeway. There was apparently no warning from the front camera and the collision avoidance system about the tree stump, though the driver had seen it prior to making the turn. The incident happened very quickly, but there was no noticeable red warning flashing on the screen. This time there is only damage to a car fender, and a tree stump. What about next time? Suppose the vehicle is slowing into a parking space, there is a child exiting nearby van and the car suddenly accelerates? No thanks!!! This problem needs to be solved! The floor mats in the BZ 4X are secured to the floor so they are not an issue. The driver of the vehicle can play an instrument with foot pedals and is therefore very aware of foot placement-so operator error is not the problem. Perhaps there is just too much autonomous driving technology and software layered over the basic EV platform. Can’t we just have the choice of a basic EV until these other problems are worked out? I signed up to be a pioneer in the adoption of electric vehicles, but not a guinea pig for autonomous driving.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.

Get notified when new recalls or reliability data is added for the Toyota bZ4X.
