The issue is reported across a range of mileages, with some owners experiencing problems as early as 7,000 miles. Safety implications are significant, as sudden braking in traffic could lead to rear-end collisions, though no crashes are reported. Buyers should be aware that while software updates have been suggested as a remedy, multiple owners indicate that the problem persists despite attempted repairs.

STEERING (1 complaints)
STEERING
1 complaintSafety-relatedAbout 1000 feet after merging onto a 4 lane freeway with sparse traffic, we were driving the car in the 3rd lane from the right. Suddenly the car's steering wheel took a hard right turn, forcing the car through multiple other lanes and onto the shoulder of the freeway, through an unpaved area, nearly colliding with freeway signs. I was able to regain control of the car before a collision and get back on the freeway. I continued on the freeway at a lower speed and after another 1000 feet or so, the car's steering wheel once again took a hard right turn, forcing the vehicle onto the shoulder, and colliding with a railing and a freeway sign. During this second instance, the lighting inside the car when off completely. During both off these episodes, I had my foot off the accelerator and the brake. Automatic Driving and Driver Assist were disabled. The safety of my self and my passenger were put at risk. The car was free of any warning lamps or inspection warnings prior to the accident. The car is currently in a repair shop.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER (1 complaints)
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
1 complaintSafety-relatedOn [XXX] my 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS unexpectedly surged forward while I was stationary in a drive-through lane, immediately after pressing the "P" (Park) button. There was no audible or visual collision warning, and no automatic braking intervention occurred. My wife was in the front passenger seat and did not observe any foot movement or pedal input that would have triggered acceleration. The surge was strong enough to push the vehicle in front of me into another car ahead of it. There were no injuries, but the event was violent and completely unexpected. The vehicle is currently at AutoNation Collision in Sarasota, Florida, with approximately $18,750 in front-end damage. Progressive is handling the insurance claim. I am concerned about a potential malfunction in the forward collision system or an unintended acceleration event. I am reporting this to document the incident in case others experience similar safety failures. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
